  • In this study, Pb(La Ce)$TiO_3$ composition ceramics were manufactured for 20 MHz resonator application. Electromechanical coupling factor, mechanical quality factor and dynamic range of thickness vibration mode were measured as the variations of L/T(length/thickness) ratio of ceramic substrats. Mechanical quality factor and dynamic range of third overtone thickness vibration mode showed the highest value of 2,773 and 52.22 dB at specimen S4(l/t=12), respectively. The excellent temperature stability of resonant frequency suitable for resonator application was shown, regardless of thermal shock.

  • The heat generation tests of SiC and MO$_2$ samples by use of a microwave heating system were carried out and UO$_2$+5 wt% CeO$_2$ pellets were sintered in a microwave furnace in an oxidizing atmosphere, by taking into account the characteristics of the microwave heating obtained from the heat generation tests. The characteristics of pellets sintered in a microwave furnace were analysed and compared with those of the pellets sintered in a conventional electrical furnace. The temperature of MO$_2$ pellets with microwave heating increased quickly with input power and the variation of output power depended on the reaction characteristics of SiC and MO$_2$ with microwave. The sintered density of UO$_2$+5wt% CeO$_2$ pellets sintered in the microwave furnace was lower about 2% T.D. than that of the pellets sintered in an electrical furnace with sintering parameters. The microstructure of pellets sintered in microwave furnace has a broader pore distribution but has a larger grain size than that of the pellets sintered in the electrical furnace.

  • Characteristics of oxidation reaction of four lanthanide chlorides(Ce, Nd, Pr and $EuCl_3$) in a oxygen-eutectic(LiCl-KCl) salt bubble column was investigated. From the results obtained from the thermochemical calculations by HSC chemistry software, the most stable lanthanide compounds in the oxygen-used rare earth chlorides system were oxychlorides(EuOCl, NdOCl, PrOCl) and oxides($CeO_2$, $PrO_2$), which coincide well with results of the Gibbs free energy of the reaction. In this study, similar to the thermochemical results, regardless of the sparging time and molten salt temperature, oxychlorides for Eu, Nd and Pr and oxides for Ce and Pr were formed as a precipitant by a reaction with oxygen. The structure of the rare earth precipitates was divided into two shapes : small cubic(oxide) and large tetragonal (oxychloride) structures. The conversion efficiencies of the lanthanide elements to their molten salt-insoluble precipitates(or compound) were increased with the sparging time and temperature, and Ce showed the best reactivity. In the conditions of $650^{\circ}C$ of the molten salt temperature and 420 min of the sparging time, the conversion efficiencies were over 99% for all the investigated lanthanide chlorides.

  • This review deals with one of the surface modification techniques, chemical conversion coating and particularly cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCC) as a promising substitute for chromium and phosphate conversion coating on magnesium and its alloys. The CeCCs are commonly considered environmentally friendly. The effects of surface preparation, coating thickness, bath composition, and e-paint on the corrosion behavior of CeCCs have been studied on the AZ31 magnesium alloy. This review also correlates the coating microstructural, morphological, and chemical characteristics with the processing parameters and corrosion protection. Results showed that the as-deposited coating system consists of a three layer structure (1) a nanocrystalline MgO transition layer in contact with the Mg substrate, (2) a nanocrystalline CeCC layer, and (3) an outer amorphous CeCC layer. The nanocrystalline CeCC layer thickness is a function of immersion time and cerium salt used. The overall corrosion protection was crucially dependent on the presence of coating defects. The corrosion resistance of AZ31 magnesium alloy was better for thinner CeCCs, which can be explained by the presence of fewer and smaller cracks. On the other hand, maximum corrosion protection was achieved when AZ31 magnesium samples with thin CeCCs are e-painted. The e-paint layer further restricts and hinders the movement of chloride and other aggressive ions present in the environment from reaching the magnesium surface.

  • The reaction of $LnCl_3{\cdot}7H_2O$ [Ln = La (1), Ce (2)] with salicylic acid (HL) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) at $20^{\circ}C$ in $H_2O$/ethanol gave after work-up and recrystallization two novel lanthanide complexes with general formula $[Ln(Phen)_2(L)_3(HL)]{\cdot}H_2O$. Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, TGA, CHN as well as by X-ray analysis. According to these results, compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and contain $Ln^{3+}$ ions with coordination number nine. Complexes 1 and 2 consist of two Phen, one neutral HL and three L anions (two L anions act as monodentate ligands and the third one is chelating to $Ln^{3+}$). Thermal decomposition led to primary loss of the Phen molecules. Then HL molecules and finally L moieties left the material to give $Ln_2O_3$.

  • Background: The conventional cerium-doped Gd2Al2Ga3O12 (GAGG(Ce)) scintillator-based gamma-ray imager has a bulky detector, which can lead to incorrect positioning of the gammaray source if the shielding against background radiation is not appropriately designed. In addition, portability is important in complex environments such as inside nuclear power plants, yet existing gamma-ray imager based on a tungsten mask tends to be weighty and therefore difficult to handle. Motivated by the need to develop a system that is not sensitive to background radiation and is portable, we changed the material of the scintillator and the coded aperture. Materials and Methods: The existing GAGG(Ce) was replaced with Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO), a scintillator with high gamma-ray detection efficiency but low energy resolution, and replaced the tungsten (W) used in the existing coded aperture with lead (Pb). Each BGO scintillator is pixelated with 144 elements (12 × 12), and each pixel has an area of 4 mm × 4 mm and the scintillator thickness ranges from 5 to 20 mm (5, 10, and 20 mm). A coded aperture consisting of Pb with a thickness of 20 mm was applied to the BGO scintillators of all thicknesses. Results and Discussion: Spectroscopic characterization, imaging performance, and image quality evaluation revealed the 10 mm-thick BGO scintillators enabled the portable gamma-ray imager to deliver optimal performance. Although its performance is slightly inferior to that of existing GAGG(Ce)-based gamma-ray imager, the results confirmed that the manufacturing cost and the system's overall weight can be reduced. Conclusion: Despite the spectral characteristics, imaging system performance, and image quality is slightly lower than that of GAGG(Ce), the results show that BGO scintillators are preferable for gamma-ray imaging systems in terms of cost and ease of deployment, and the proposed design is well worth applying to systems intended for use in areas that do not require high precision.

  • This work demonstrates a method for modeling of electrical conductivity in high-temperature proton-conducting oxides. Total conductivity was calculated assuming that it comprises partial conductivities contributed by protons, oxygen ions and electron holes. From the polt $\sigma_{tot}$ vs. $po_2\;{1/4}$ in wet atmosphere, thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were obtained representing transport properties such as concentration and mobility of the charge-carrying defects. The formulas for the calculation of partial conduction were derived based on the defect structure of HTPCs. Illustrative calculation were made for $SrCe_{0.95}Yb_{0.05}O_{2.975}$ system.
