  • Changes in water content, dry weight, total nitrogen (T-N), P, K, Ca, Mg, B, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn and death rate were studied in winter buds of mulberry trees. Winter buds of the early season varieties, Hongolbbong and Chongolbbong, (Morus Lhou Koioz) and midseason varieties, Kaeryangbbong and Chongilbbong, (Morus alba L.) were sampled every 7 days from February 28 to April 28, 1986. The result were as follow : 1. Water content was increased by 20% over the level of 45% in late February. The water content in Chongolbbing was the highest, whereas that in the rest of the varieties was nearly equal. 2. Dry weights of winter buds of the early varieties were always greater than those of midseason varieties. The dry weight of buds of early season varieties began to increase in late February and increased rapidly after April 18. There was no weight gain until April 12 in buds of midseason varieties, followed by a slow increase thereafter. 3. T-N and P, K, B, Fe, Cu and Zn concentration increased with time, Mn decreased, and Ca and Mg levels were constant. 4. T-N and Mn levels were higher and P, Ca, Fe and Cu lower in Hongolbbong than in the other varieties. T-N, Mg and Cu levels were lower in Chongolbbong. 5. The death rate of winter buds increased with the approach of the budding season. The rate was highest in Chongolbbong and lowest in Hongolbbong.

  • The effects of temperature and retaining ion on the separation factor (${\alpha}$) and distribution ratio (D) of some lanthanides ($Pr^{3+},\;Nd^{3+},\;Sm^{3+},\;and\;Er^{3+}$) have been studied in the EDTA solution as an elutant by using Amberite IR 120 + resin. The retaining ions on the resin were ${NH_4}^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}$and $Ce^{3+}$. Separation factor of Nd/Pr is much improved by using $Ce^{3+}$ as retaining ion. The distribution ratios were decreased with the increase of temperature, but separation factors did not always increase with the increase of temperature. However, in the case of $Ce^{3+}$ as retaining ion, separation factors of Nd/Pr and Sm/Nd were increased with the increasing of temperature. And also in the case of $Zn^{2+}$ as retaining ion, separation factor of Er/Sm was increased with the increasing of temperature.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary protein and calcium levels on Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mg accumulation of the tissue of the Pb-administered rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to a 3$\times$3$\times$2 factorial design with 3 levels of protein (40%, 15%, 6%), 3 levels of Ca (1.2%, 0.6%, 0.12%) and 2 feeding periods (3 and 7 weeks). The control group was included separately. The rats were exposed to the drinking water containing 2,000ppm of lead. Calcium contents in serum, liver and femur were decreased with Pb administration. Calcium contents in serum and femur were reduced with dietary protein and Ca levels. Level of serum Fe showed no significant difference with Pb administration in the rats fed the high Ca diet. Iron content in liver was not affected by the lead when the rats fed the diet containing high protein and Ca. Level of serum Cu was lower in the Pb added groups than in the control group and tended to be reduced with decreasing dietary protein and Ca levels. Copper content in liver was not affected by the lead when the rats fed the high Ca diet. Level of serum Zn was decreased in the low protein-low Ca group. Magnesium content in serum was decreased with Pb administration when the rats fed the diet containing low protein and Ca. However, magnesium content in liver was reduced with Pb administration and affected only by dietary protein level.

  • The ceramic balls impregnated with $20{\sim}40nm$ sized Ag colloid were examined for heavy metals absorption and antibacterial activities in the drinking water. The preparation conditions of ceramic ball that the porosity was excellent were as follows: starting material: 85 wt% $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$, binder: 5 wt% PVA and 15 wt% ${\alpha}-Ca_3(PO_4)_2$, heating temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, duration: 3 hrs. The ceramic balls obtained under these conditions showed specific surface area of $110m^2/g$, pore size of $120{\mu}m$ and porosity of 80%. Also, as the results of a performance test on a rate of adsorbing and removing heavy metals in the drinking water by using the.AAS, heavy metals such as Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu were removed to the extent that their content became 0.03mg/l or lower after 1 day and they showed an excellent bactericidal activity that all coliforms were killed after 3 hrs.

  • Four isoforms of calcium binding proteins containing 2 EF hand motifs and a dynein light chain-like domain in the human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, namely OvCaBP1, 2, 3, and 4, were characterized. They had molecular weights of 22.7, 21.6, 23.7, and 22.5 kDa, respectively and showed 37.2-42.1% sequence identity to CaBP22.8 of O. viverrini. All were detected in 2- and 4-week-old immature and mature parasites. Additionally, OvCaBP4 was found in newly excysted juveniles. Polyclonal antibodies against each isoform were generated to detect the native proteins in parasite extracts by Western blot analysis. All OvCaBPs were detected in soluble and insoluble crude worm extracts and in the excretory-secretory product, at approximate sizes of 21-23 kDa. The ion-binding properties of the proteins were analyzed by mobility shift assays with the divalent cations $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$. All OvCaBPs showed mobility shifts with $Ca^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$. OvCaBP1 showed also positive results with $Mg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$. As tegumental proteins, OvCaBP1, 2, and 3 are interesting drug targets for the treatment of opisthorchiasis.
