  • This study is part of the carbonation degree DB accumulation through quantitative analysis of carbonation depth, Ca(OH)2 and CO2 according to the type of finish and years of use of old concrete structures in order to predict the amount of CO2 that can be absorbed through carbonation of concrete. To this end, the depth of carbonation of the concrete core specimen is measured using an indicator, and the dry amount of water combined with CO2 in the sample is measured using a differential thermal gravimetric analyzer for samples in the carbonation area and non-carbonated area classified by the indicator, and the absorption compared to the weight of the sample. The amount of absorbed CO2 was calculated. In addition, the degree of carbonation was calculated through quantitative comparison of Ca(OH)2 in the carbonation section and non-carbonation section. In the future, we will continue to add the survey and analysis data of dismantled structures and use them as basic data for estimating the amount of carbon dioxide that can be absorbed according to the exposure conditions and years of use by concrete mix.

  • γ-dicalcium silicate(γ-C2S) is known as a polymorphism of belite. Due to its high CO2 fixing capacity and the production process with low CO2 emission, γ-C2S has attracted more attention of researchers. For the further development of γ-C2S applications in construction industry, this study aims to investigate the method for synthesizing high purity of γ-C2S. The influence of raw materials and calcination temperatures on the purity of γ-C2S was evaluated. Several Ca bearing materials were selected as the calcium source, the materials which's main component is SiO2 were used as the silicon source. Raw materials were mixed and calcined under different temperatures. The results revealed that the highest purity could be obtained using Ca(OH)2 and SiO2 powder as raw materials. In addition, a relatively economic synthesis method using natural mineral materials-limestone and silica sand as raw materials were developed for the practical application. The purity of synthetic γ-C2S was recorded up to 77.6%.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu kola, is a tropical medicinal plant native to Madagascar, Southeast Asia, and South Africa. It is well known to have biological activities, including wound healing, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, cytotoxic, and antioxidant effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of extracts of C. asiatica against age-related eye degeneration and to examine their physiological activities. MATERIALS/METHODS: To determine the effects of CA-HE50 (C. asiatica 50% EtOH extract) on retinal pigment cells, we assessed the cytotoxicity of CoCl2 and oxidized-A2E in ARPE-19 cells and observed the protective effects of CA-HE50 against N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced retinal damage in C57BL/6 mice. In particular, we measured factors related to apoptosis and anti-oxidation and the protein levels of rhodopsin/opsin. We also measured glucose uptake to characterize glucose metabolism, a major factor in cell protection. RESULTS: Induction of cytotoxicity with CoCl2 and oxidized-A2E inhibited decreases in the viability of ARPE-19 cells when CA-HE50 was administered, and promoted glucose uptake under normal conditions (P < 0.05). In addition, CA-HE50 inhibited degeneration/apoptosis of the retina in the context of MNU-induced toxicity (P < 0.05). In particular, CA-HE50 at 200 mg/kg inhibited the cleavage of pro-caspase-3 and pro-poly (ADP-ribose)-polymerase and maintained the expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and heme oxygenase-1 similar to normal control levels. Rhodopsin/opsin expression was maintained at a higher level than in normal controls. CONCLUSION: A series of experiments confirmed that CA-HE50 was effective for inhibiting or preventing age-related eye damage/degeneration. Based on these results, we believe it is worthwhile to develop drugs or functional foods related to age-related eye degeneration using CA-HE50.

  • Varying quantities of a high-thermal-expansion glass, 50CaO-20ZnO-$20B_2O_3-10SiO_2$ (CZBS), were added to alumina and sintered at $875^{\circ}C$ for 2 h for low temperature co-firing ceramic (LTCC) applications. As the amount of glass addition increased from 40 wt% to 70 wt%, the apparent density of the sintered product increased from 88.8% to 91.5%, which was also qualitatively confirmed by microstructural observation. When the glass addition was very high, e.g., 70 wt%, an apparent formation of secondary phases such as $CaZn_2AlZnSiAlO_7$, $Ca_2Al(AlSi)O_7$, $Ca_2Al_2SiO_7$, $Ca_2ZnSi_2O_7$ and ZnO, was observed. Both the dielectric constant and the coefficient of thermal expansion increased with the glass addition, which was qualitatively consistent with the analytical models, while the experimental values were lower than the predicted ones due to the presence of pores and secondary phases.

  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate the red water reducing effects of phosphate based inhibitor when it was applied to water distribution system. The effects of pH, alkalinity, calcium concentration in the reduction of the red water also studied. The most finished water in Korea showed relatively high corrosiveness and was required to introduce some types of corrosion reducing methods such as addition of alkalinity. The precipitation of $CaCO_3$ by addition of $Ca(OH)_2$ formed porous film on the surface of the carbon steel pipes and was displaced easily from the surface of the pipes; on the other hand, addition of zinc phosphate (ZOP) formed reliable film on the surface and reduced iron release and color. Although the main function of ZOP was to suppress the release of Pb and Cu, it also reduced iron concentration released from water distribution pipes.

  • In this study, calcium sulfate(gypsum) powder was obtained using waste sulfuric acid and stainless refinery sludge by- produced from chemical reagent and the iron industry, by the neutralization of waste sulfuric acid. As variables for the experiment the mole ratio of the H$_2$SO$_4$ : Ca(OH)$_2$, the pH, the reaction temperature and time, the amount of catalyst were used. The crystal shape and microstructure of obtained powder were observed by XRD and SEM, and the thermal property was investigated by DTA. As the NaCl is added 0~20wt% as a catalyst to the H$_2$SO$_4$ : Ca(OH)$_2$, system it can be found that the crystal shape goes through the processes as follows : gypsum dihydratlongrightarrowgypsum hemihydrate+gypsum dihydratelongrightarrowgypsum hemihydrate. And gypsum hemihydrate is $\beta$-type as the result of DTA. As waste sulfuric acid and stainless refinery sludge were used, the pH of reacted solution (which was 0.8) was rapidly raised up to 8~9 by the addition of stainless sludge and gypsum dihydrate was produced as a by-product. Therefore, it was found that stainless refinery sludge is sufficiently applicable for the neutralization of waste sulfuric acid.

  • The cement is a typical CO2 emission industry. Manufacturing process improvements and increased use of alternative materials are needed to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This study confirmed the basic characteristics of cement hydration by sintering CAF at low temperature as a CO2 adsorbent material. For the hydration product of the synthetic CAF, crystal phase analysis, porosity, and structural images were confirmed, and the compressive strength was measured. The replacement rate of SCAF was 10, 20, and 100 %, and the compressive strength tended to decrease as the replacement rate increased. In addition, when the SCAF substitution rate is 100 %, the hydration products of the early age are calcium aluminum oxide hydrate (Ca3Al2O6 x H2O) and calcium iron hydroxide (Ca3Fe(OH)12), and at substitution rates of 10 and 20 %, CAF compounds other than general cement hydrates brownmillerite was observed. As for the porosity, the pore size increased and the porosity increased with the increase of the replacement ratio. As a result of this study, CAF manufactured by low-temperature sintering seems to be difficult to use alone and general curing for utilization as a CO2 adsorbing material.

  • Acicular type aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate was synthesized by carbonation reaction of $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry and $CO_2$ gas. As increasing the initial concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ ion, calcite crystal phase substantially decreased while that of aragonite crystal phase increased. According to XRD and EDS analysis, it was found that the addition of $MgCl_2$ induced the $Mg^{2+}$ ion to substitute in $Ca^{2+}$ ion site of calcite lattice then the unstabled calcite structure be resolved, consequently the growth of calcite structure is interrupted while the growth of aragonite structure is expedited.

  • Ti3C2Tx MXene, a 2D material, is known to exhibit unique characteristics that are strongly dependent on surface termination groups. Here, we developed a novel annealing approach with Ca as a reducing agent to simultaneously remove F and O groups from the surface of multilayered MXene powder. Unlike H2 annealing that removes F effectively but has difficulty in removing O, annealing with Ca effectively removed both O and F. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the proposed approach effectively removed F and O from the MXene powder. The results of O/N analyses showed that the O concentration decreased by 57.5% (from 2.66 to 1.13 wt%). In addition, XPS fitting showed that the volume fraction of metal oxides (TiO2 and Al2O3) decreased, while surface termination groups (-O and -OH) were enhanced, which could increase the hydrophilic and adsorption properties of the MXene. These findings suggest that when F and O are removed from the MXene powder, the interlayer spacing of its lattice structure increases. The proposed treatment also resulted in an increase in the specific surface area (from 5.17 to 10.98 m2/g), with an increase in oxidation resistance temperature in air from ~436 to ~667 ℃. The benefits of this novel technology were verified by demonstrating the significantly improved cyclic charge-discharge characteristics of a lithium-ion battery with a Ca-treated MXene electrode.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the reaction mechanism of soil and bacteria solution by various mixing ratios. For this purpose, in order to understand the reaction mechanisms of microorganisms and weathered granite soil, the tests were carried out under various mixing ratios additives such as soil, bacteria solution, $Ca(OH)_2$ and fixture. The test results from this study are summarized as follows. Firstly, the reaction between the bacteria solution and fixture produced a precipitate called vaterite, a type of silicate and calcium carbonate. Secondly, as a result of SEM analysis, the resulting precipitates generated from the test results using the specimens with various mixing ratios except SW condition and the irregular spherical microscopic shapes were formed in the size of $150{\mu}m$ to $20{\mu}m$. In addition, it can be seen that the bacteria solution and the fixture reacted between the granules to form an adsorbent material layer on the surface, and the microorganisms had a biological solidifying effect when the pores are combined into hard particles. Finally, The XRD analysis of the sediment resulting from the reaction between the microorganism and the deposit control agent confirmed the presence of a type of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) vaterite, which affects soil strength formation, as well as silicate($SiO_2$).
