Nanoporous carbons with a high specific surface area were prepared directly from thermoplastic acrylic resin as carbon precursor and MgO powder as template by carbonization over the temperature range, $500-1000^{\circ}C$. The effect of the carbonization temperature on the pore structure and $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of the obtained porous carbon was examined. The textural properties and morphology of the porous carbon materials were analyzed by $N_2/-196^{\circ}C$ and $CO_2/0^{\circ}C$ adsorption/desorption isotherms, SEM and TEM. The $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of the prepared porous carbon was measured at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 bar and 30 bar. The specific surface area increased from 237 to $1251m^2/g$, and the total pore volumes increased from 0.242 to $0.763cm^3/g$ with increasing the carbonization temperature. The carbonization temperature acts mainly by generating large narrow micropores and mesopores with an average pore size dependent on the level of carbonization of the MgO-templated nanoporous carbons. The results showed that the MgO-templated nanoporous carbons at $900^{\circ}C$ exhibited the best $CO_2$ adsorption value of 194 mg/g at 1 bar.
Future power plants will be required to adopt some type of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to reduce their CO2 emissions. One of distinguished CCS techniques expected to resolve the green house effect is to apply the oxy-fuel combustion technique to power plant, and a lot of research/demonstration programs have been going on in the world. In this paper, CO2-capturing power plants based on gas turbine and oxy-fuel combustion are investigated over several types of configurations. As a prior step, simulation model for 500 MW-class combined cycle power plant was set and was used as a reference case. The efficiencies of several power plants was compared and the advantages and disadvanteges was investigated.
A carbon capture and storage (CCS) plays a very important role to reduce $CO_2$ dramatically in $CO_2$ emission sources which are distributed throughout various areas. Numerous research works have been undertaken to analyze the techno-economic feasibility of planning the CCS infrastructure. However, uncertainties such as $CO_2$ emissions, $CO_2$ reduction costs, and carbon taxes may exist in various impact factors of the CCS infrastructure. However, few research works have adopted these uncertainties in designing the CCS infrastructure. In this study, a two-stage stochastic programming model is developed for planning the CCS infrastructure under uncertain operating costs and carbon taxes. It can help determine where and how much $CO_2$ to capture, store or transport for the purpose of minimizing the total annual $CO_2$ reduction cost in handling the uncertainties while meeting the $CO_2$ mitigation target. The capability of the proposed model to provide correct decisions despite changing the operating costs and carbon taxes is tested by applying it to a real case study based on Korea. The results will help to determine planning of a CCS infrastructure under uncertain environments.
The stereotype of flexible MOFs(Amino-MIL-53) and carbonized porous carbon prepared from renewable resources is successfully synthesized for $CO_2$ reduction application. The textural properties of these microporous materials are investigated, and their $CO_2$ storage capacity and separation performance are evaluated. Owing to the combined effects of $CO_2-Amino$ interaction and its flexibility, a $CO_2$ uptake of $2.5mmol\;g^{-1}$ is observed in Amino-MIL-53 at 20 bar 298 K. In contrast, $CH_4$ uptake in Amino-MIL-53 is very low up to 20 bar, implying potential sorbent for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation. Carbonized samples contain a small quantity of metal residues(K, Ca, Mg, S), resulting in naturally doped porous carbon. Due to the trace metal, even higher $CO_2$ uptake of $4.7mmol\;g^{-1}$ is also observed at 20 bar 298 K. Furthermore, the $CH_4$ storage capacity is $2.9mmol\;g^{-1}$ at 298 K and 20 bar. To evaluate the $CO_2$ separation performance, the selectivity based on ideal adsorption solution theory for $CO_2/CH_4$ binary mixtures on the presented porous materials is investigated.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has been suggested as an ultimate strategy for mitigating climate change. However, potential leakage of $CO_2$ from the CCS facilities could lead to serious damage to environment. Plants can be a bio-indicator for $CO_2$ leakage as a cost-effective way, although plants' responses vary with plant species. In this study, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the relation between the $CO_2$ tolerance of corn species and the initial physiological responses to the elevated soil $CO_2$ concentration. Treatment groups included CI (99.99% $CO_2$ gas injection) and BI (no gas injection). Mean soil $CO_2$ concentration for the CI treatment was 19.5~39.4%, and mean $O_2$ concentration was 6.6~18.4%. The soil gas concentrations in the BI treatment were at the ambient levels. In the CI treatment, chlorophyll content was not decreased until the $13^{th}$ day of the $CO_2$ injection. On the $15^{th}$ day, leaf starch content and stomatal conductance were increased by 89% and 25% in the CI treatment compared to the BI treatment, respectively. This might be due to the compensatory reaction of corn to avoid high soil $CO_2$ stress. However, the prolonged $CO_2$ injection decreased chlorophyll content after 13 days. After $CO_2$ injection, plant biomass was reduced by 25% in the CI treatment compared to the BI treatment. Due to the inhibited root growth, leaf phosphorous and potassium contents were decreased by 54% on average in the CI treatment. This study indicates that corn has a high tolerance to soil $CO_2$ concentration of 30% for 2 weeks by its compensatory reactions such as an maintenance of chlorophyll content and an increase in stomatal conductance.

Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage(CCS) is regarded as one of the most promising options to response climate change. CCS is a three-stage process consisting of the capture of carbon dioxide($CO_2$), the transport of $CO_2$ to a storage location, and the long term isolation of $CO_2$ from the atmosphere for the purpose of carbon emission mitigation. Up to now, process design for this $CO_2$ marine geological storage has been carried out mainly on pure $CO_2$. Unfortunately the $CO_2$ mixture captured from the power plants and steel making plants contains many impurities such as $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar, $H_2O$, $SO_2$, $H_2S$. A small amount of impurities can change the thermodynamic properties and then significantly affect the compression, purification, transport and injection processes. In order to design a reliable $CO_2$ marine geological storage system, it is necessary to analyze the impact of these impurities on the whole CCS process at initial design stage. The purpose of the present paper is to compare and analyse the relevant physical property models including BWRS, PR, PRBM, RKS and SRK equations of state, and NRTL-RK model which are crucial numerical process simulation tools. To evaluate the predictive accuracy of the equation of the state for $CO_2-SO_2$ mixture, we compared numerical calculation results with reference experimental data. In addition, optimum binary parameter to consider the interaction of $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ molecules was suggested based on the mean absolute percent error. In conclusion, we suggest the most reliable physical property model with optimized binary parameter in designing the $CO_2-SO_2$ mixture marine geological storage process.

The $CO_2$ capture technology using an aqueous amine solution is studied widely now. The entire process consists of an absorber to remove carbon dioxide selectively and a regenerator to regenerate absorbent and acquire pure carbon dioxide. Because there are the complicated design variables that affect performance of the process, it needs optimization and analysis through modeling to make a commercially reliable process. In this study, the decomposition method was proposed to consider convergence problem and sensitivity analysis was executed for the carbon dioxide capture process variables. Non-equilibrium model was used in the simulation to get more realistic results and we designed optimized process with more than 95% purity and 90% recovery.
Oxy-combustion with a circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFBC) technology has been paid attention to cope with the climate change and fuel supply problem. In addition, Oxy-CFBC technology as one of the methods for carbon dioxide capture is an eco-friendly that can reduce air pollutants, such as $SO_2$, NO and CO through a flue gas recirculation process. The newly developed $100kW_{th}$ pilot-scale Oxy-CFBC system used for this research has been continuously utilizing to investigate oxy-combustion characteristics for various fuels, coals and biomasses to verify the possibility of fuel diversification. The anthracite is known as a low reactivity fuel due to a lot of fixed carbon and ash. Therefore, this study aims not only to improve combustion efficiency of an anthracite, but also to capture carbon dioxide. As a result, compared to air-combustion of sub-bituminous coal, oxy-combustion of anthracite could improve 2% combustion efficiency and emissions of $SO_2$, CO and NO were reduced 15%, 60% and 99%, respectively. In addition, stable operating of Oxy-CFBC could capture above 94 vol.% $CO_2$.
Currently, the technology of $CO_2$ capture and storage (CCS) has become the main issue for climate change and global warming. Among CCS technologies, the prediction of $CO_2$ behavior underground is very critical for $CO_2$ storage design, especially for its safety. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to model and simulate $CO_2$ flow and its heat transfer characteristics in a storage site, for more accurate evaluation of the safety for $CO_2$ storage process. In the present study, as part of the storage design, a micro pore-scale model was developed to mimic real porous structure, and computational fluid dynamics was applied to calculate the $CO_2$ flow and thermal fields in the micro pore-scale porous structure. Three different configurations of 3-dimensional (3D) micro-pore structures were developed, and compared. In particular, the technique of assigning random pore size in 3D porous media was considered. For the computation, physical conditions such as temperature and pressure were set up, equivalent to the underground condition at which the $CO_2$ fluid was injected. From the results, the characteristics of the flow and thermal fields of $CO_2$ were scrutinized, and the influence of the configuration of the micro-pore structure on the flow and scalar transport was investigated.
The effects of reaction temperature, SO2 and CO2 concentration in an air gas stream, particle sizes of limestone on the reactivity and capacity of SO2 removal have been determined in a thermogravimetric analyser(TGA). The apparent reaction order of sulfation reaction of pre-calcined lime(CaO) with respect to SO2 is found to be close to unity. The apparent activation energies are found to be 17,000 kcal/kmol for sulfation of pre-calcined lime and 19,500 kcal/kmol for direct sulfation of limestone(CaCO3). The initial sulfation reaction rate of pre-calcined lime increases with increasing temperature, whereas the sulfur capture capacity exhibits a maximum value at 90$0^{\circ}C$. In direct sulfation of limestone, sulfation reactivity and sulfur capature capacity of sorbent increase with increasing temperature and decreasing CO2 concentration in a gas bulk stream. The main pare of pre-calcined lime is shifted to the larger pore sizes and pore volume decreases with increasing sulfation time and temperature. The surface area of lime decreases with increasing calcination temperature under an air atmosphere, whereas is yearly constant under a CO2(5, 10%) atmosphere in a gas stream.
