  • According to the experiment results, the alignment of FLC cell can become more uniform at thick cell gap by adjusting the amplitude of the aligned AC electric field which is applying to the FLC cell during $N^{\ast}-SmC^{\ast}$ phase transition. If the amplitude of AC electric field is high enough, the FLC molecules forced with the amplitude and aligned to a particular direction.

  • In this paper, we introduce a modification of extremally disconnected spaces which is said to be m-extremally disconnected. And we obtain many characterizations of m-extremally disconnected spaces. The concepts of ${\ast}$-extremally disconnected spaces, ${\ast}$-hyperconnected spaces, and generalized hyperconnectedness are as examples for this paper.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary Rhus verniciflua Stokes on the quality of Hanwoo (Korean cattle) beef during cold storage $(4^{\circ}C)$ after thawing. After 4 groups (3 heads/group) of 22 months-Hanwoo (Korean cattle) steen were fed a common basal diet with 0, 2, 4 and $6\%$ Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) powder for 4 months prior to slaughter, samples of M semimembranous from 12 carcasses were stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 9 months. Crude fat was significantly lower in 4 and $6\%$ RVS treatments than in control (p<0.05). pH value was significantly higher in4 and $6\%$ RVS treatments than in control from 2 and 5 days (p<0.05). Thawing loss was not significantly different among the treatments but drip loss was significantly lower in 4 and $6\%$ RVS treatments than in control during storage (p<0.05). CIE $L^{\ast}$ value was significantly lower in RVS treatments than in control during storage (p<0.05) and CIE $a^{\ast}$ value was significantly higher in 4 and $6\%$ RVS treatments than in control (p<0..05). CIE $b^{\ast}$ value was significantly higher in control than in $6\%$ RVS treatment in 0 days (p<0.05) but it was significantly higher in $4\%$ RVS treatment than in control in 7 days (p<0.05). CIE $C^{\ast}$ value was significantly higher in $4\%$ RVS treatment than in control during storage (p<0.05) and CIE $h^0$ value was significantly lower in $4\%$ RVS treatment than in control (p<0.05). TBARS value of 2 days was significantly lower in 4 and $6\%$ RVS treatments than in control (p<0.05) but it was significantly lower in $4\%$ RVS treatment than the other treatments from 5 days (p<0.05). Surface MetMb concentration was significantly lower in RVS treatment than in control during storage (p<0.05) and it was significantly lower in $4\%$ RVS treatment than in the other treatments in 7days (p<0.05) but surface $R_{6.30}/R_{580}$ value was opposite to this result.

  • Let R be an associative ring with identity, M a t.u.p. monoid with only one unit and ${\omega}:M{\rightarrow}End(R)$ a monoid homomorphism. Let R be a reversible, M-compatible ring and ${\alpha}=a_1g_1+{\cdots}+a_ng_n$ a non-zero element in skew monoid ring $R{\ast}M$. It is proved that if there exists a non-zero element ${\beta}=b_1h_1+{\cdots}+b_mh_m$ in $R{\ast}M$ with ${\alpha}{\beta}=c$ is a constant, then there exist $1{\leq}i_0{\leq}n$, $1{\leq}j_0{\leq}m$ such that $g_{i_0}=e=h_{j_0}$ and $a_{i_0}b_{j_0}=c$ and there exist elements a, $0{\neq}r$ in R with ${\alpha}r=ca$. As a consequence, it is proved that ${\alpha}{\in}R*M$ is unit if and only if there exists $1{\leq}i_0{\leq}n$ such that $g_{i_0}=e$, $a_{i_0}$ is unit and aj is nilpotent for each $j{\neq}i_0$, where R is a reversible or right duo ring. Furthermore, we determine the relation between clean and nil clean elements of R and those elements in skew monoid ring $R{\ast}M$, where R is a reversible or right duo ring.

  • Objective: To measure aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity in the pulp of teeth treated with fixed appliances for 6 months, and compare it with AST activity measured in untreated teeth. Methods: The study sample consisted of 16 healthy subjects (mean age $25.7{\pm}4.3$ years) who required the extraction of maxillary premolars for orthodontic reasons. Of these, 6 individuals had a total of 11 sound teeth extracted without any orthodontic treatment (the control group), and 10 individuals had a total of 20 sound teeth extracted after 6 months of orthodontic alignment (the experimental group). Dental pulp samples were extracted from all control and experimental teeth, and the AST activity exhibited by these samples was determined spectrophotometrically at $20^{\circ}C$. Results: Mean AST values were $25.29{\times}10^{-5}U/mg$ (standard deviation [SD] 9.95) in the control group and $27.54{\times}10^{-5}U/mg$ (SD 31.81) in the experimental group. The difference between these means was not statistically significantly (p = 0.778), and the distribution of the AST values was also similar in both groups. Conclusions: No statistically significant increase in AST activity in the pulp of mechanically loaded teeth was detected after 6 months of orthodontic alignment, as compared to that of teeth extracted from individuals who had not undergone orthodontic treatment. This suggests that time-related regenerative processes occur in the dental pulp.

  • Cocos nucifera (C. nucifera) oil is indigenously used to treat cardiovascular diseases. However, coconut husk fibre (which is rich in polyphenols) has not been screened for this property. Based on the ethnomedicinal use of polyphenols in treating cardiovascular diseases, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of polyphenols of C. nucifera husk fibre on selected cardiovascular disease indices in mice. Fifty adult male Swiss albino mice were assigned randomly into five groups (A-E). Mice in groups B, C, D and E were administered 31.25, 62.5, 125, and 250 mg/kg body weight polyphenols of ethyl acetate extract of C. nucifera husk fibre respectively while the control group (A) mice received 5% DMSO for seven days. The mice were sacrificed twenty four hours after the last administration of polyphenols. Heart and plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities and plasma lipid profile were determined. Results revealed significant reduction (*p< 0.05) in plasma levels of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol with no significant change (*p> 0.05) in HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and VLDL levels in the plasma at all doses of polyphenols administered compared to controls. There was significant reduction (*p< 0.05) in the activities of heart AST and LDH while plasma ALT, AST, and ALP activities were not significantly altered (*p> 0.05) at all doses of polyphenols administered compared to controls. These results suggest that the polyphenols of C. nucifera husk fibre possess cardio-protective properties and also indicate their possible use in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

  • The object of the present paper is to characterize 3-dimensional trans-Sasakian manifolds of type (α, β) admitting ∗-Ricci solitons and ∗-gradient Ricci solitons. Under certain restrictions on the smooth functions α and β, we have proved that a trans-Sasakian 3-manifold of type (α, β) admitting a ∗-Ricci soliton reduces to a β-Kenmotsu manifold and admitting a ∗-gradient Ricci soliton is either flat or ∗-Einstein or it becomes a β-Kenmotsu manifold. Also an illustrative example is presented to verify our results.

  • The conformational preference of tetrahomodioxacalix[4]arenes with three different para substituents on the phenolic ring has been investigated by using ab initio molecular orbital theory (RHF/6-31$G^{\ast}$) and density functional theory (B3LYP/6-31$G^{\ast}$). The stability order is predicted to be cone > C-1,2-alternate > partial cone > 1,3-alternate > COC-1,2-alternate. The distorted cone conformation is found to be most stable in a gas phase and the calculated results are in agreement with the reported $^1$H NMR and X-ray experimental observations. The substitution of methylene with dimethyleneoxa bridges increases the size of the annulus of the molecule, its conformational mobility, and the number of hydrogen bonding patterns. The thermodynamic stability and the conformational characteristics of tetrahomodioxacalix[4]arenes are discussed in regards of the number of phenolic hydrogen bonding patterns and the polarity of a molecule. The substituent effects on the para position of the phenolic ring are also introduced.
