Properties and Manufacture of $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ Composites Densified by Liquid-Phase Sintering(II) (액상소결에 의한 $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ 복합체의 제조와 특성(II))

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta$-SiC+39vol. %ZrB2 electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated by adding 1, 2, 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3(6:4wt%) of the liquid forming additives. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta-SiC$ and ZrB2. The relative density is over 90.8% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing Al2O3+Y2O3 contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed $\alpha-SiC(6H, 4H)$, ZrB2 and $\beta-SiC$(15R). Flexural srength showed the highest of 315.5MPa for composites added with 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives as room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 5.5MPa.m1/2 and 5.3MPa.m1/2 for composites added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively at room temperature. The area fraction of the elongated SiC grain in the etched surface of sample showed 65% and 65.1% for composite added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively. The electrical resistivity at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites wall all positive temperature coefficient(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

Electrical Resistivity of the $\beta-SiC+39vol.%TiB_2$ Composites ($\beta-SiC+39vol.%TiB_2$ 복합체의 전기저항률)

  • The composites were fabricated 61 vol% $\beta$-SiC and $39vol%TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 8, 12, 16wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by hot pressing at $1730^{\circ}C$ and subsequent pressed annealing and pressureless annealing at $1750^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours to form YAG. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase. The relative density of composites were increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. The fracture toughness showed the highest value of $7.77MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity and the resistance temperature coefficient showed the lowest of $7.3{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and $3.8{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$, respectively, for composite added with 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • Interfacial characteristics of aluminum borate whisker reinforced AS52 matrix composite was investigated. Peak hardness of AS52 composite was obtained aging at $170^{\circ}C$ for 15h and the aging process was accelerated by the presence of the aluminium borate whisker. The MgO layer, which was the interfacial reaction product between the reinforcement and the Mg matrix, was produced with 20 nm thickness in as-cast condition. As the aging time increased, the thickness of the interfacial reaction layer increased to 50 nm in peak aged condition. The nano-indentation test results indicated that the strength of interface was improved by the aging but over-aging degraded the reinforcement and decreased the interfacial strength which resulted in the decrease of overall composite strength.

  • Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders were fabricated by ball milling, and the properties of these powders were characterized. Mixed 50Ti-(50-x)Ni-xCu powders of 5 to 10at.%Cu composition were milled for 100 hours using SUS 1/4" balls in argon atmosphere. Ball to powder ratio was 20:1 and rotating speed was 100 rpm. Tensile strength, microstructure and phase transformation of ball milled Ti-(50-x)Ni-xCu powders were studied. After 100 hours milling, Ti, Ni and Cu elements were alloyed completely and an amorphous phase was formed. Amorphous phase was crystallized to martensite(B 19') and austenite(B2) after heat treatment for 1 hour at $850^{\circ}C$. As the Cu contents were increased, tensile strength of extruded 6061Al/TiNiCu was decreased, and B19'martensite phases In the TiNi particles were the causes of high tensile stress of extruded 6061Al/TiNiCu.NiCu.

In this microstructures, the relative density is over 97% of the theoretical density and the porosity increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents because of the increasing tendency of pore formation. But the fracture toughness showed the highest of $7.0MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest of $1.59\times10^{-3}\Omega{\cdot}cm$ for composite added with 8wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature and is all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR} against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

The electrical resistivity showed the lowest of $5.22{\times}10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm$ for composite added with 20wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature and is all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • A wear behavior of electroless (Ni-P-X, X: SiC, $Al_2O_3$, Diamond) composite coating layers, formed under various conditions on commerical grade low carbon steel, has been investigated using Taber abrasion tester and scanning electron microscope. Several factors, which are type of particles, co-deposited content, particle size, distribution of particles and heat-treatment, influenced the wear resistance. The wear resistance of the composited coating layers after heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was increased 70 times with diamond, 15 times with SiC and 8 times with $Al_2O_3$, compared with the electroless nickel plating layer without heat-treatment.

For composites added with l2wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ additives at room temperature The electrical resistivity and the resistance temperature coefficient respectively showed the lowest of 6.0${\sim}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}$ cm and 3.1${\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ for composite added with l2wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, there has been growing interest in low loss and low dielectric constant material for LTCC application, as the frequency range for electronic devices increases. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of cordierite filler for low dielectric constant LTCC material. From the previous experiments, two glass compositions of B-Si-Al-Zn-Ba-Ca-O and B-Si-Al-Sr-Ca-O system, were chosen. Each powder of two glass compositions was sintered respectively with commercial cordierite powder in temperature range from $800^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$. Crystalline cordierite and glass peaks were affected only with two factors of composition and sintering temperature among various factors. With the optimized condition of two cordierite/glass compositions, obtained dielectric constant was below 5.5 and quality factor was above 1,000. Closed pore of sintered body was controled by sintering temperature and sintering time. When cordierite/glass composite with ratio of 5.5:4.5 was sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, densification was sufficient with good dielectric characteristics of ${\epsilon}_r<5.1,\;Q{\ge}1,000$. Residual fine closed pores could be reduced with control of sintering temperature and time. 3 point bending strength and chemical durability were evaluated to obtain feasibility for substrate material.

Thermal Shock Behavior of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ Ceramics Prepared by a Precipitation Method (침전법으로 제조한 $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$계 세라믹스의 열충격 거동)

  • A precipitation method, one of the most effective liquid phase reaction methods, was adopted in order to prepare high-tech Al2O3/ZrO2 composite ceramics, and the effects of stress-induced phase transformation of ZrO2 on thermal shock behavior of Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics were investigated. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Metal hydroxides were obtained by single precipitation(process A) and co-precipitation(process B) method at the condition of pH=7, and the composition of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was fixed as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). Critical temperature difference showing rapid strength degradation by thermal shock showed higher value in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(process A : 20$0^{\circ}C$, process B : 215$^{\circ}C$) than in Al2O3(175$^{\circ}C$). The improvement of thermal shock property for Al2O3/ZrO2 composites was mainly due to the increase of strength at room temperature by adding ZrO2. The strength degradation was more severe for the sample with higher strength at room temperature. Crack initiation energies by thermal shock showed higher values in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites than in Al2O3 ceramics due to increase of fracture toughness by ZrO2.
