In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of grinding and wear process of diamond wheel far ceramic materials. Normal component of grinding resistance of $Al_2$O$_3$ was less then that of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$. This seems to be the characteristics of ceramic tools on work pieces both of high hardness. For the case of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, as the mesh number of wheel increases, the surface roughness decreases. For the case of $Al_2 O_3$, the surface roughness does not decreases. Specific binding energy decreases as the material removal rate per unit time increases. For the case of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, grinding is carried out by abrasive wear processes. For the case of $Al_2 O_3$, grinding is carried out by grain shedding process due to brittle fracture.

Functionally gradient NiCrAlY/$ZrO_2$-$Y_2$$O_3$ and NiCrAlY/$ZrO_2$- $CeO_2$-$Y_2$$O_3$ coatings were prepared by APS. The as-sprayed microstructure consisted of metal-rich and ceramic-rich regions, between which $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layers existed owing to the oxidation during APS. During oxidation between 900 and $1100^{\circ}C$ in air, the pre-existing $Al_2$$O_3$-rich scales grew, due mainly to the preferential reaction of Al with inwardly transporting oxygen along the heterogeneous phase boundaries. As the amount of ceramics in the coating increased, the oxidation resistance increased.
The mullite-15v/o ZrO2 composites were prepared by dispersing ZrO2-3m/o Y2O3 powders into the mullite matrix in order to improve the mechanical properties of the mullite. The densification and retention of t-ZrO2 in the matrix of synthetic mullite were also investigated. From IR spectroscopic analysis, the obtained amorphous SiO2-Al2O3 powder was observed to have Si-O-Al chemical bond in its structure which might result in the homogeneous mullite composition. The lattice parameter of the mullite powder calcined above 130$0^{\circ}C$ (a0=7.5468$\AA$) is nearly close to the value of stoichiometric mullite (71.8wt% Al2O3, a0=7.5456$\AA$). The sintering behavior, microstructure, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the mullite and mullite-15v/o ZrO2 composites have been studied. The mullite-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) ceramics with relative densities of 96% were obtained when sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$. The flexural strength and fractrue toughness of the composites sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$(calcination temperature of mullite powders ; 125$0^{\circ}C$) had maximum values of 307MPa and 2.50MPa.m1/2, respectively. The fracture toughness improvement in the mullite-ZrO2 cmoposite is assumed to be resulted from the combined effect of the stress-induced phase transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 and the crack deflection due to microcracking by the monoclinic ZrO2 formation.
The reaction-sintered alumina and zirconia-alumina ceramics having low firing shrinkage were prepared from the Al/Al2O3 or Al/ZrO2(Ca-PSZ) powder mixtures via the attrition milling. And in this milling process the effect of the characteristics of used powders was investigated. Attrition milling was much more effective in reducing the particle size of ceramic/metal mixed powders than ball milling. Powder mixtures of flake-type Al with coarse alumina was much more effectively comminuted by the attrition milling than the mixtures of globular-type Al with coarse alumina powders. And coarse alumina than fine alumina was much more beneficial in cutting and reducing the ductile Al particles. In the contrary to Al/Al2O3 powder mixtures, Al/ZrO2 powder mixtures was not effectively comminutd. But whether using the alumina ball media or attrition milled with Al2O3 powder rather than Al, the milling efficiency was much more increased.
Y2O3 and Nb2O5 co-doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystals((Y, Nb)-TZP) containing 10 to 30 vol% $Al_2O_3$ were prepared and hydrothermal stability of the composites was evaluated after aging for 5 h at the temperature range of $150^{\circ}C$$250^{\circ}C$ under 4 MPa $H_2O$ vapor pressure in an autoclave. The (Y, Nb)-TZP/Al2O3 composites showed excellent phase stability under the hydrothermal conditions, as compared with the 3Y-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composites, due to the combined effects of the Y-Nb ordering in the $t-ZrO_2$ lattice, the reduction of oxygen vacancy concentration, and the $Al_2O_3$ addition. The strength and fracture toughness of the (Y, Nb)-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite, containing 20 vol% of 2.8 $Al_2O_3$ particles, were 700 MPa and 8.1 MP.$am^{1/2}$, respectively.

Sinterbility, microstructure, mechenical and electrical properties of yttriastabilized zirkconiz (92 mole % ZrO2 + 8 mole % Y2O3) doped with 0.5 mole % SiO2 and 0-2.O mole% Al2O3 were studied as a functin of Al2O3 addition. Sintered density increased with increasing Al2O3 addition up to o.5 mole%but decreased up to 1.0mole% Al2O3. Vickers hardness is proportional to sintered density. The specimen added 0.5mole% Al2O3 and 0.5mole% SiO2 exhibited a maximum conductivity. And the specimen added 0.5 mole % Al2O3 and 0.5 mole% SiO2 was measured a maximum electromotive force for a characteristics of oxyzen partial pressure.
This paper investigates the effect of prolonged high temperature exposure on concentric laminated $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composites. An ultrafine scale microstructure with a cellular 7 layer concentric lamination with unidirectional alignment was fabricated by a multi-pass extrusion method. Each laminate in the microstructure was $2-3{\mu}m$ thick. An alternate lamina was composed of 75%$Al_2O_3$-(25%m-$ZrO_2$) and t-$ZrO_2$ ceramics. The composite was sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ and subjected to $1450^{\circ}C$ temperature for 24 hours to 72 hours. We investigated the effect of long time high temperature exposure on the generation of residual stress and grain growth and their effect on the overall stability of the composites. The residual stress development and its subsequent effect on the microstructure with the edge cracking behavior mechanism were investigated. The residual stress in the concentric laminated microstructure causes extensive micro cracks in the t-$ZrO_2$ layer, despite the very thin laminate thickness. The material properties like Vickers hardness and fracture toughness were measured and evaluated along with the microstructure of the composites with prolonged high temperature exposure.
The reaction bonded alumina ceramics was prepared through the addition of each SiC and ZrO2 powder to the mixture of Al metal powder and Al2O3 The mono sized (3mm) and biodal sized (3mm+5mm) balls were used in attrition milling of Al and starting powders. The milling efficiency of both cases was compared by the analysis of particle size and X-ray diffraction. After the forming and sintering of each powder batchs the weight gains dimensional changes and densities were determined. The specimens were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope. Bimodal sized balls had better milling effect than single ball size in the milling of Al powder. However in the milling which ceramic powders mono sized the green body during the reaction sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 5 hour was about 10% The densities attained the values of 92-98% theoretical. The SiC added specimen that was milled with 3mm ball media had 96% theoretical density and dense microstructure.
