TFT(Two-Facing-Targets) 스퍼터장치에 의해 증착된 (TiAl)N 박막의 상변태에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Phase Transformations of (TiAl)N Films Deposited by TFT Sputtering System)

  • Titanium aluminium nitride((TiAl)N) film is anticipated as an advanced coating film with wear resistance used for drills, bites etc. and with corrosion resistance at a high temperature. In this study, (TiAl)N thin films were deposited both at room temperature and at elevated substrate temperatures of 573 to 773 K by using a two-facing-targets type DC sputtering system in a mixture Ar and $N_2$ gases. Atomic compositions of the binary Ti-Al alloy target is Al-rich (25Ti-75Al (atm%)). Process parameters such as precursor volume %, substrate temperature and Ar/$N_2$ gas ratio were optimized. The crystallization processes and phase transformations of (TiAl)N thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The microhardness of (TiAl)N thin films were measured by a dynamic hardness tester. The films obtained with Ar/$N_2$ gas ratio of 1:3 and at 673 K substrate temperature showed the highest microhardness of $H_v$ 810. The crystallized and phase transformations of (TiAl)N thin films were $Ti_2AlN+AlN{\rightarrow}TiN+AlN$ for Ar/$N_2$ gas ratio of 1:3, $Ti_2AlN+AlN{\rightarrow}TiN+AlN{\rightarrow}Ti_2AlN+TiN+AlN$ for Ar/$N_2$ gas ratio of 1:1 and $TiN+AlN{\rightarrow}Ti_2AlN+TiN+AlN{\rightarrow}Ti_2AlN+AlN{\rightarrow}Ti_2AlN+TiN+AlN$ for Ar/$N_2$ gas ratio of 3:1. The above results are discussed in terms of crystallized phases and microhardness.

  • The solubility of Ti in Al matrix was determined by X-ray diffraction method on two different mechanical alloying systems, i.e Al+$Al_3Ti$ and Al+Ti alloys. Starting powder compositions of two systems were chosen for final volume fraction of $Al_3Ti$ phase being 25%. The solubility of Ti in ${\alpha}$-Al was estimated by the lattice parameter measurement of Al. For Al+$Al_3Ti$ mixture, it appeared that some of $Al_3Ti$ particles decomposed during milling and maximum solubility of Ti in Al was about 0.99%. The majority of $Al_3Ti$ particles were dispersed uniformly in Al matrix, having approximate size of 100~200 nm. On the other hand, higher Ti solubility of 1.24 wt.% was found in Al+Ti system, with starting composition of Al+10 wt.%Ti. After 15 hours of milling, Ti phase was identified as 20 nm sized particles embedded in Al matrix. The annealing of mechanically alloyed powders from Al+$Al_3Ti$ and Al+10 wt.%Ti systems was followed in the temperature range of 200 to $600^{\circ}C$ to study thermal stability of supersaturated solution of Al(Ti). After annealing, the lattice parameter of Al reverted back to that of pure Al, and the peak intensity ratio of $Al_3Ti$/Al was increased more than the original value before annealing. These results suggest that Ti dissolve into alpha-Al solutions during milling, and by annealing, $Do_{22}-Al_3Ti$ phase forms from Al(Ti) solution.

  • Quaternary Ti-Al-Si-N films were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid deposition system of arc ion plating (AIP) method for Ti-Al source and DC magnetron sputtering technique for Si incorporation. The synthesized Ti-Al-Si-N films were revealed to be composites of solid-solution (Ti, Al, Si)N crystallites and amorphous Si3N4 by instrumental analyses. The Si addition in Ti-Al-N films affected the refinement and uniform distribution of crystallites by percolation phenomenon of amorphous silicon nitride, similarly to Si effect in TiN film. As the Si content increased up to about 9 at.%, the hardness of Ti-Al-N film steeply increased from 30 GPa to about 50 GPa. The highest microhardness value (~50 GPa) was obtained from the Ti-Al-Si-N film haying the Si content of 9 at.%, the microstructure of which was characterized by a nanocomposite of nc-(Ti,Al,Si) N/a$-Si_3$$N_4$.

  • The microstructural evolution and crystalline phases of this infiltration of Ti+Al liquids in TiC, SiC, TiC+C, and SiC+C preforms have been investigated. As the Ti and Al mixing ratio in Ti+Al infiltrated liquid changes, the newly formed reaction products, which were reacted from the Ti+Al liquid with preforms, consisted of three major phases as Ti3AlC, Al2Ti4C2 or Al4C3. The TiC grain shape was changed to spheroid, when Ti3AlC was formed. In case of Al2Ti4C2 formation, the platelet grain was formed from the original TiC grain. When Al4C3 was formed, nodular or intergranular fine-grained Al4C3 was formed around the TiC grain, while the original TiC grain shape was not changed.

Fe-30at.%A1 합금의 압연성에 미치는 Cr, B, Ti 및 Si 첨가효과 (Effects of Cr, B, Ti and Si on Rolling Characteristics in Fe-30at.%A1 Alloy)

  • Some alloying elements such as Cr, B, Ti and Si were added individually or as a mixture to Fe-30 at.%Al alloys. The alloys were melted using an arc furnace and then heat-treated for homogenization at 1000$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and followed by rolling at 1000$^{\circ}C$. The alloying elements on rolling characteristics were investigated by the microstructures and fracture mode before and after rolling. The microstructures before rolling showed that all of the alloys had equiaxed grains. On the other hand, the microstructures of rolling plane as well as its perpendicular plane became elongated after rolling. The alloys such as Fe-30Al, Fe-30Al-3Ti, Fe-30Al-0.5B, Fe-30Al-5Cr and Fe-30Al-3Ti-0.5B revealed better rolling behaviour from the point that intergranular and cleavage fractures were not fundamentally occurred. But the addition of 5Ti or 3Si to Fe-Al alloys had detrimental effects. The Ti-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Ti, Fe-30Al-5Ti-5Cr, Fe-30Al-3Ti-5Cr and Fe-30Al-5Ti-0.5B were cracked through grain and showed cleavage fracture. The Si-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Si, Fe-27Al-3Si and Fe-27Al-5Cr-3Si were cracked along the grain boundary and showed intergranular fracture. $DO_3{\leftrightarrow}B_2$ transition temperature of Fe-30at.%Al alloy was 520$^{\circ}C$, whereas the addition of 3Ti and 3Ti+0.5B comparably increased the temperature to 797 and 773$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • TiN and AlN are ceramic materials with extensive applications due to its excellent mechanical and chemical properties at elevated temperature. The purpose of this research is to develop the method for the synthesis of ternary nitride powder, titanium-aluminum-nitrogen system, which have an excellent property of both TiN and AlN. The ternary nitride such as $Ti_3AlN$, $Ti_2AlN$ and $Ti_3Al_2N_2$ can be synthesized by the interdiffusion nitriding method in Ar gas, however, the ternary nitride coexist with TiN, AlN, $Ti_3Al$ and ${\alpha}$-Ti. The ternary nitride are stable below $1400^{\circ}C$, but these are gradually decomposed into TiN, $Ti_3Al$ and AlN above $1400^{\circ}C$. The thermal oxidation characteristics of the Ti-Al-N compound synthesized by the interdiffusion nitriding method is superior to that of the TiN+AlN mixed powder, and the oxidation for both materials show the differential behaviors.

  • Alloying behavior of nanocrystalline Al-Ti-(Si) composite powders via mechanical alloying (MA) has been investigated, and the effect of Si on the microstructural changes during MA was discussed. The microstructures of both MA powders and extruded compacts were examined. In Al-Ti system, the solid solutionized nanocrystalline powders could be obtained by MA. On the contrary, fine Si particles were embedded as an elemental state in the matrix of Al-Ti-Si system because of the brittleness and the negligible solid solubility of Si in Al. After hot extrusion, $Al3Ti$ phase was finely precipitated in Al-10fSTi alloy, and Si particles were dissolved to form $(Al, Si)_3Ti$ phase in Al-10%Ti-2%Si alloy.

  • Mechanical alloying is an effective process to finely distribute inert dispersoids in an Al-TM(TM is a transition metal) system. It has been considered that high melting point aluminides are formed by precipitation from supersaturated Al(Ti) powder. This analysis is based on the fact that much higher content of TM than the solubioity can be dissolved in alpha aluminum during the high energy ball milling. Thus, decomposition behavior of Ti in the Al(Ti) was considered very important. But it is confirmed that the higher portion of Ti than Al(Ti) solid solution is existed as nano-sized Ti particles in the MA powders by high energy ball nilling from the XRD spectrum and TEM analysis in this study. Therefore, the role of undissolved TM particles affect the formation of aluminides should be suitably considered. In this study, we present experimental observation on the formation of $Al_3Ti$ fron mechanical alloyed Al-Ti alloys in the hyperperitectic region. This study showed that, in the mechanically alloyed Al-20wt%Ti specimen, intermediate phase of cubic $Al_3Ti$ and tetragonal $Al_{24}Ti_8$ formed at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, respectively, before the MA state reaches to equilibrium at higher temperatures. The formation behavior of $Ll_2-Al_3Ti$ is interpreted by interdiffusion of Al and Ti in solid state based on the fact that large amount of nano-sized Ti particles exist in the milled powder. Present analysis indicated undissolved Ti particles of nanosize should have played an important role initiation the formation of $Al_3Ti$ phase during annealing.

SHS법에 의한 $TiB_2-Al_2O_3$계 복합물의 합성 및 상압소결에 관한 연구 (Synthesis of $TiB_2-Al_2O_3$ Composite by Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) and Its Pressureless Sintering)

  • A composite of TiB2-Al2O3 system was successfully prepared from a mixture of TiO2, B2O3, and Al by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) with a novel characteristic, utilizing the internal oxidation heat of aluminium metal of the mixture, instead of by a conventional technique, externally heating a mixture of Ti, B and Al2O3. From a mixture with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0, pure two phases of TiB2 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 with good crystallinity and small, uniform sizes were formed. However, when the B/Ti molar ratio of the mixture goes to a value less than 2.0, in addition to the above main minerals, a small smounts of metastable phases such as TiB and Ti3B4 were formed. It was found that about 60%, the optimum green density of compacts gave their highest reaction rate and temperature during SHS process. TiB2-Al2O3 system composite with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0 could be pressurelessly sintered even at 190$0^{\circ}C$ under Ar gas flows without any addition of sintering aids, showing their good properties such as 91.2% in relative density, 2750 kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in Vickers hardness and 2620 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in flexural strength.
