COG 알고리즘으로 파악한 Proteobacteria의 보존적 유전자

  • A COG (clusters of orthologous groups of proteins) algorithm, protein similarities among genomes, was used to detect conserved genes and to figure out their relationships within 42 procaryote, 33 Bacteria and 16 Proteobacteria All analyzed procaryotes shared 75 COGs. COG0195, COG0358 and COG0528 were only represented by the 42 procaryotes. Sixty-four COGs were added as conserved genes in 33 eubacteria. Each Proteobacteria group has a unique repertoire of COGs. Metabolic COGs were more diverse in the beta-Proteobacteria group than in the other groups. The possibilities of detecting new biological molecules is high in phylogenetically related organisms, hence the identification of useful proteins by using this algorithm is possible.

Effects of Polygalae Radix on β-Amyloid Accumulation and Memory Impairment Induced by Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion in Rats (원지(遠志)가 만성적 뇌혈류저하 흰쥐의 β-Amyloid 축적과 기억장애에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study was investigated the effects of the root of Polygala tenuifolia (POL) on learning and memory impairment induced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in rats. Methods : Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion was produced by permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (pBCAO). POL was administered orally once a day (130 mg/kg of water-extract) for 28 days starting at 4 weeks after the pBCAO. The acquisition of learning and the retention of memory were tested on 9th week after the pBCAO using the Morris water maze. In addition, effects of POL on $A{\beta}$ generation and expressions of APP and BACE1 were observed in the hippocampus of rats. Results : POL significantly prolonged the swimming time spent in target quadrant and significantly reduced the swimming time spent in the quadrant far from the target. POL significantly increased the percentage of swim in the targer quadrant in the retention test, while POL was not effective on the escape latencies in the acquisition training trials. POL significantly reduced the levels of $A{\beta}_{(1-40)}$ and $A{\beta}_{(1-42)}$ in the cerebral cortex and the level of $A{\beta}_{(1-42)}$ in the hippocampus produced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. POL also significantly attenuated the up-regulation of APP and BACE1 expression in the hippocampus produced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. Conclusions : The results show that POL alleviated memory deficit and up-regulation of $A{\beta}$ and BACE1 expressions in the hippocampus. This result suggests that POL may exert ameliorating effect on memory deficit through inhibition of ${\beta}$-secretase activity and $A{\beta}$ generation.

Factors Affecting the Depression of Elementary School Teachers (초등교사의 우울에 미치는 영향요인)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting depression in elementary school teachers. The research design was a descriptive study. Methods:Data were collected by questionnaires from 283 elementary school teachers. Data were analyzed using a t-test, ANOVA, a $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean scores were 2.44, 3.07 and 3.68 out of 5 on Likert scales for burnout, job stress and ego-resiliency, respectively. The mean scores were 1.47 and 2.95 out of 4 on Likert scales for items of depression and job satisfaction, respectively. Teaching experience and class size affected depression significantly. There was a positive correlation between depression and burnout(r=0.465, p<.001), and between depression and job stress(r =.220, p<.001),while a negative correlation was observed between depression and job satisfaction(r=-.249, p<.001), and depression and ego-resiliency(r=-.643, p<.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that ego-resiliency(${\beta}=0.639$), job satisfaction(${\beta}=.141$), burnout(${\beta}=.094$), and job stress(${\beta}=.067$) affected depression in order and the four research variables led to a 42.7% prediction for depression among elementary school teachers. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, a systematic plan for decreasing job stress and increasing eco-resilience is needed to improve depression among elementary school teachers.

Protective effects of a chalcone derivative against Aβ-induced oxidative stress and neuronal damage

  • Amyloid ${\beta}$-peptide ($A{\beta}$-peptide)-induced oxidative stress is thought to be a critical component of the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). New chalcone derivatives, the Chana series, were recently synthesized from the retrochalcones of licorice. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of the Chana series against neurodegenerative changes in vitro and in vivo. Among the Chana series, Chana 30 showed the highest free radical scavenging activity (90.7%) in the 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl assay. Chana 30 also protected against $A{\beta}$-induced neural cell injury in vitro. Furthermore, Chana 30 reduced the learning and memory deficits of $A{\beta}_{1-42}$-peptide injected mice. Taken together, these results suggest that Chana 30 may be a promising candidate as a potent therapeutic agent against neurodegenerative diseases.

Nurses' Knowledge and Compliance on Deep Vein Thrombosis (일 지역 병원간호사의 심부정맥혈전증에 관한 지식과 간호수행)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the DVT-related knowledge and compliance of hospital nurses. Methods: A survey questionnaire was administrated to a convenience sample of 367 nurses working at 3 university hospitals and 4 general hospitals located in Busan. Results: The mean score of DVT-related knowledge was $16.86{\pm}$3.40$ points out of 26, with a percentage of correct answers of 64.8%. The mean score of DVT-related compliance was $21.40{\pm}6.42$ points out of 32. There was a significant correlation between hospital nurses' DVTrelated knowledge and compliance (r=.309, p=.000). The factors for predicting hospital nurses' DVT-related compliance included knowledge of treatment and care areas, the subcategories of DVT knowledge (${\beta}$=.214), knowledge of the area of risk factors (${\beta}$=.105), whether to perform DVT prevention and treatment based on protocols (${\beta}$=.193), the existence of DVT protocols (${\beta}$=.168) and the degree of interest in DVT (${\beta}$=.102) and the total explanatory power of these was 21.3%. Conclusion: To improve compliance on preventing DVT effectively, it is necessary to improve nurses' DVT-related knowledge and interest in DVT through appropriate education. And, it is necessary to develop standardized protocols and guidelines.

Escape of Lyβfrom Hot and Optically Thick Media

  • Symbiotic stars and quasars show strong far UV resonance doublets including O VI 1032 and 1038, which are known to be major coolants of astrophysical plasma with high temperature T > $10^5K$. We investigate the transfer of $H{\alpha}$ and $Ly{\beta}$ in an emission nebula of temperature T ~ $10^5$, where n=2 population is significant. Line photons of $H{\alpha}$ and $Ly{\beta}$ are transferred in the medium through spatial and frequency diffusion altering their identity according to the branching ratios. We adopt a Monte Carlo technique to describe the transfer of $H{\alpha}$ and $Ly{\beta}$ in an emission nebula with a uniform density and a simple geometrical figure. We find that the temperature of the emission nebula is the major controlling parameter to produce a nonnegligible flux of $Ly{\beta}$. In particular, when T exceeds $10^5K$ the number flux ratio may reach ~ 25% with line center optical depth of a few. We discuss the formation of broad $H{\alpha}$ wings from Raman scattering of $Ly{\beta}$ emergent from a hot emission nebula.

Structural and Thermal Characteristics of Silk Fibroin/PHEMA Blend Films (견피브로인/Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) 브렌드 필름의 구조 및 열적 특성)

  • Structural and thermal characteristics of silk fibroin/poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) blend films were investigated using FTIR, X-ray diffractometer, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimeter and scanning electron microscope. FTIR spectra showed that the conformation of silk fibroin prepared by dissolving in formic acid was $\beta$-sheet, which did not affected by blending with PHEMA. The X-ray diffraction patterns also showed that individual crystalline structure of silk fibroin and PHEMA was not affected for the blend films. The initial thermal decomposition temperature of silk fibroin/PHEMA blend film tends to be higher than either of silk fkbroin or PHEMA. Thermal stability of both polymers, more notably PHEMA, can be improved by blending two components. As a result of SEM observation, the phases separation for silk fibroin/PHEMA blend films occured regardless of blend ratio ; continuous and dispersed phase were silk fibroin and PHEMA component, respectively.

The Protective Factors of Suicide Probability in Religious Male High School Students (종교계고등학교 남학생의 자살위험성 보호요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the protective factors that influence suicide probability in religious male high school students. Methods: The data was collected from Nov. 5 to Dec. 10, 2009. Data were collected by self-report questionnaire from 255 students selected from 2 religious male high schools in B city. The instruments for this study were the Suicide Probability Scale for Adolescence (SPS-A), Inventory Parents Peer Attachment-Revision (IPPA-R), Spiritual Well-being Scale (SWBS), and Ego-identity Scale. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS 14.0 program. Results: The protective factors of suicide probability in religious male high school students were identified as existential spiritual well-being (${\beta}$= -.46, p<.001), self-identity (${\beta}$= -.30, p<.001), and mother attachment (${\beta}$= -.21, p<.001). These three factors explained 61.5% of the variance in suicide probability. Conclusions: The results suggest that improvement in spirituality, ego-identity, and mother attachment for religious male high school students is important to reduce the probability of suicide.

  • In order to identification of carotenoid pigments of Haloarcular sp. EH-1 as a food for fish were analyzed. The content of carotenoids cultured in 3 L and 5 L bioreactor were 83.1 and 82.7 mg%, respectively. Identification of each carotenoid was achieved by means of co-TLC and co-HPLC with authentic specimens, spectroscopic and instrumental analyses, and chemical treatments as usual. The main components identified were ${\beta}$-carotene(8.1%), 3-hydroxyechinenone(42.0%) and astaxanthin(25.0%).
