Using immunohistochemical technique, three endocrine cell types were observed in the GIT of the Korean salamander, Hynobius leechii. BPP-immunoreactive cells were distributed from the pyloric region to the small intestine. A moderated number of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were restricted to the pyloric region. 5-HT-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated throughout the GIT, reaching a peak in the pyloric region. The presence of BPP- and 5-HT-immunoreactive cells are identified for the first time in Hynobius leechii.
The development of calcitonin, serotonin(5-HT) and bovine chromogranin (BCG)-immunoreactive cells was investigated in the thyroid glands of Korean native goat from fetus to adult, using an immunohistochemical method. Moderate number of calcitonin-immunoreactive cells were present in the thyroid glands from 1 month to 6 months after birth, whereas a few in the adult. They were not present in the thyroid glands of fetus and 1 day after birth. A number of 5-HT- and BCG-immunoreactive cells were present in the thyroid glands of Korean native goat from fetus to adult. They were increased in number with age. BCG-immunoreactive cells were weakly reacted in fetus and 1 day after birth, while these cell were strongly stained from 1 month to adult. These findings suggest that calcitonin-, 5-HT- and BCG-immunoreactive cells were present in the thyroid gland of Korean native goat.
The quality characteristics of cookies between fresh shredded garlic(FSG) and heat-treated($150^{\circ}C$, 5 min) shredded garlic (HT-SG) were comparatively analyzed based on different content additions. The levels investigated were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6% for both shredded garlics. Dough pH was lower in the FSG-added cookies than in the HT-SG-added cookies. The spread factor decreased with the addition of shredded garlic compared to the control($10.63{\pm}0.57$), but differences were insignificant within each group. Cookies hardness was highest at 2% garlic content, and it was higher for HT-SG than FSG. Compared to the measured L-value of the control, the L-values of the test samples decreased with increasing garlic contents. With increasing garlic contents, the a-value increased, but the b-value remained mostly unchanged, with less significant difference compared to the control. The color of the HT-SG group tended to be brown as the garlic content increased. The degree of browning was more pronounced for HT-SG than FSG. Surface cracking of the cookies tended to be higher in the FSG samples than in HT-SG. Compared to the control, garlic taste and flavor increased remarkably with increasing garlic content, and they were stronger for the FSG cookies. The overall acceptability of HT-SG was relatively high, and it was highest for the HT-SG cookies with a 0.5~2% garlic contents than for the control cookies.

Background: 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 (5-HT3) receptors have been known to be associated with the modulation of nociceptive transmission. However, it is uncertain whether 5-HT3 plays a role in the antinociceptive or pronociceptive pathway for incisional pain. In this study, we evaluated the effects of palonosetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, on incisional pain in rats when administered intrathecally or intraplantarly. Methods: An intrathecal catheter was implanted through the cisterna magna and placed in the intrathecal space of rats. An incision in the plantaris muscle of the right hind paw was done under anesthesia with sevoflurane. Withdrawal thresholds were evaluated with the von Frey filament after 2 hours. Palonosetron (0.5 and 0.1 ${\mu}g$ intrathecally; 0.5 ${\mu}g$ intraplantarly) was administered and the thresholds were observed for 4 hours. Results: Mechanical hypersensitivity developed after the incision. Intrathecal palonosetron (0.5 ${\mu}g$ and 0.1 ${\mu}g$) did not alter the paw withdrawal threshold. Intraplantar palonosetron (0.5 ${\mu}g$) also did not change the paw withdrawal threshold. Conclusions: Intrathecal and intraplantar palonosetron (0.5 ${\mu}g$) had no effect on modulating the mechanical hypersensitivity in the incisional pain model of rats.
This study was conducted to analyze the application of boron compounds, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and heat treatment (HT) on changes in the density, moisture content, and flexural properties of samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus) wood. Samama wood was impregnated with borax (BX) and boric acid (BA) using a pressure method at 5 atm for 4 h. Afterwards, the wood was impregnated with MMA at the same pressure and duration. Finally, the samama wood was given HT at 90 ℃ and 180 ℃. The results indicate that there was a weight gain of 93.4% in the wood impregnated using BA and MMA monomer and HT at 90 ℃. Consequently, the wood's density increased by 82.3%. Increased MOE and MOR percentages of 32.2% and 29.4%, respectively, were also found. HT at 180 ℃ degraded the wood components and MMA, and consequently, the density, MOE, and MOR also decreased. The wood impregnated by BX, BA, and MMA, and subjected to HT also had decreased moisture content (MC). This research recommends that the application of boron (BX, BA) should be combined with an MMA monomer and HT at 90 ℃ as an alternative method to improve samama wood quality. If darker color is preferable, HT should be conducted at 180 ℃.
Objectives:Tardive dyskinesia(TD) is a serious side effect associated with long-term antipsychotic treatments. Some candidate genetic polymorphisms were reported to be associated with TD and possible involvement of serotonergic receptors in the pathophysiology of TD has been suggested. In the present study, we investigated the association between $5-HT_6$ receptor gene polymorphism and TD with schizophrenia. Methods:To investigate the relationship between $5-HT_6$ receptor gene polymorphism and TD, 60 patients with TD were compared with 60 patients without TD. The 267C/T allele of $5-HT_6$ receptor gene was genotyped by means of polymerase chain reaction method. TD was evaluated using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale(AIMS). Results:The patients with the three 267C/T genotype showed no significant differences in age, gender, and duration of illness. No significant difference in genotype frequencies was observed between schizophrenic patients with and without TD. In addition, there was no difference in allele frequencies. Further analysis with an measure of AIMS scores showed that these scores were not significantly influenced by the $5-HT_6$ receptor gene polymorphism. Conclusion:These results suggest that 267C/T polymorphism of $5-HT_6$ receptor gene is not significantly associated with susceptibility to TD in schizophrenia.

Objectives : It was investigated new herbal prescription HT005 supported by traditional Korean medicine has a activity on the longitudinal bone growth of rats. HT005 were consisted of the root of Angelica sinensis, the fruit of Alpinia oxyphylla, the root of Astragalus membranaceus, the stem of Eleutherococcus senticosus, and the root of Dioscorea japonica, and Poria cocos. Method : To investigate the effect on longitudinal bone growth in adolescent male Sprague-Dawley rats, the longitudinal length of growth plate was measured directly by the tetracycline fluorescent labeling method and chondrocyte staining method. HT005 administered orally for four days, and the tetracycline was injected twice on the growth plate of the animals for fluorescent dying. The rate of longitudinal bone growth was measured the length between the tetracycline bands which fixed on the 3rd day and 5th day after injection. Cresyl violet was also used to stain the chondrocytes in the growth plate. The length of growth plate after administration was compared. Expression of IGF-1 and BMP-2 in the growth plate was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Results : HT005 showed a significant longitudinal bone growth which was $301.0{\pm}6.1\;{\mu}m/day$ at the dose of 100 mg/kg and $283.8{\pm}1.25\;{\mu}m/day$ (p < 0.001)at the dose of 10 mg/kg of HT005, compared to control group by the tetracycline fluorescent labeling method. HT005 showed a significant chondrocyte length on growth plate which was measured $797.19{\pm}3.31\;{\mu}m$ (p < 0.001) at the dose of 100 mg/kg and $720.14{\pm}2.19$ (p < 0.001) ${\mu}m$ at the dose of 10 mg/kg compared to the control group by cresyl-violet staining method. Both the number and intensity of BMP-2 and IGF-1 positive cells were increased in the hypertrophic zone of growth plate. There was a significant correlation between BMP-2 and IGF-1 expression and heights of chondrocytes in growth plate. Conclusions : Treatment of HT005 on Sprague-Dawley rats markedly increased the longitudinal bone growth. Therefore, HT005 may be an alternative herbal source to growth hormone as it promotes bone growth in children afflicted by growth retardation.

In this study, the protective effect of rice with Phellinus linteus mycelium (PLMR) against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress was assessed in a mouse hippocampal neuronal HT22 cell line through (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) salt (MTS) assay and western blot. MTS assay using HT22 cells showed that PLMR extract did not affect viability at a concentration range from 1 mg/mL to 5 mg/mL. However, at concentrations over 10 mg/mL, PLMR extract resulted in increased cell death. Cell viability of HT22 was significantly reduced by $H_2O_2$ treatment, and reduction of cell viability was efficiently restored by treatment with PLMR extract in a dose-dependent manner from 0.1 to 1 mg/mL. Cells treated with $H_2O_2$ showed increased expression of Bax, a pro-apoptotic protein, which was down-regulated by treatment with PLMR extract. On the other hand, cells treated with $H_2O_2$ resulted in reduced expression of Bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic protein, which was restored by treatment with PLMR extract. In addition, treatment with PLMR extract reduced expression of cleaved caspase 3 and PARP, which were up-regulated by $H_2O_2$ treatment. The results may suggest that treatment with PLMR extract would suppress $H_2O_2$-induced apoptosis of HT22 cells.
We investigated whether regional hyperthermia (HT) increased post-surgical complications in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Between 1996 and 2007, 205 patients treated with preoperative CCRT and curative surgery were evaluable for the analysis of acute and late toxicities. A total dose of 39.6 Gy or 45 Gy was delivered concurrently with one or two cycles of chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin). Eighty-eight patients received regional HT twice a week using an 8-MHz radiofrequency capacitive heating device. Surgery was performed 4~6 weeks after the completion of preoperative CCRT. The median age was 59 years (range, 18~83) and the median follow-up period was 61months (range, 2~191). The 5-year overall survival and complication-free survival rate of all patients was 77.4% and 73.7%, respectively. Early leakage, delayed leakage, anastomotic stricture, fistula, and small bowel obstruction occurred in 1.0%, 2.9%, 1.5%, 5.9%, and 17.1%, respectively. HT did not increase all kinds of complications. The 5-year complication-free survival rate was 71.8% in the non-HT group and 76.3% in the HT group (p=0.293). Regional HT did not increase postoperative complications in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with preoperative CCRT followed by curative surgery.
