Present study was investigated the hepatic effects of equol on the 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-induced enzymatic activity and expression of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in mice. Equol was administered orally at 5 and 25 mg/kg BW for 4 weeks. Subsequently, mice pretreated with equol received DMBA intragastrically twice a week for 2 weeks. DMBA induced CYP1 activity as well as the expression of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1. Each of these effects was significantly reduced by equol in dose-dependent manner (p<0.05). Equol also reduced the relative AhR mRNA expression, similar to its effect on CYP1A1. These results suggest that equol modulates the CYP1A1 through a reduction of AhR expression in mice treated with DMBA.
The effect of Fumonisin B1, a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium moniliforme on bacterial viruses P1 and Lambda, was investigated by the virus plaque assay. Fumonisin B1 inhibited the P1 viral multiplication in the concentration range from $100{\mu}g$/ml to $400{\mu}g$/ml. The inhibition was Fumonisin B1 concentration-dependent. Another bacterial virus Lambda multiplication was also inhibited by lower concentration of Fumonisin B1 ($10{\mu}g$/ml~$50{\mu}g$/ml). This inhibition was dependent on Fumonisin B1 and on virus-Fumonisin B1 reaction time. Sensitivity of bacteriophage Lambda to Fumonisin B1 was higher than that of P1 virus. Lambda vital DNA was treated in vitro with Fumonisin B1 at various concentration. Significant DNA fragmentation by Fumonisin 191 was observed in the agarose gel electrophoresis. Lambda viral DNA was partially digested even in the Fumonisin B1 $10{\mu}g$ and the level of its fragmentation was dependent on Fumonisin B1 amount up to $30{\mu}g$ per assay.
Irradiation of 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiyne and 5,5-dimethyl-1-phenyl-1,3-hexadiyne with methanol yields 1:1 polar addition products, [E]- and [Z]-1,4-diphenyl-1-methoxy-1-buten-3-yne and [E]- and [Z]-5,5-dimethyl-1-methoxy-1-phenyl-1-hexen-3-yne, respectively. These geometrical isomers were converted into each other reaching the photostationary state on irradiation with 300 nm UV light. The photoaddition reaction of 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiyne and 5,5-dimethyl-1-phenyl-1,3-hexadiyne with methanol seems to proceed from the zwitterionic lowest excited state.
$C1q/TNF-{\alpha}-Related$ Protein 1 (CTRP1) has recently been shown to act as a blood pressure regulator, as it induces vasoconstriction. In the aorta, CTRP1 facilitates recruitment of angiotensin II receptor 1 (AT1R) to plasma membrane, through activation of the AKT/AS160 signaling pathway. This leads to activation of the Ras homolog gene family (Rho)/Rho kinase (ROCK) signaling pathway, resulting in vasoconstriction. Accordingly, mice overexpressing Ctrp1 have hypertensive phenotype. Patients with hypertension also display higher circulating CTRP1 levels, compared to healthy individuals, indicating that excessive CTRP1 may affect development of hypertension. Conversely, CTRP1 is regarded as an 'innate blood pressure modulator' because CTRP1 increases blood pressure under dehydration to prevent hypotension. Mice lacking Ctrp1 fail to maintain normotension under dehydration conditions, resulting in hypotension, suggesting that CTRP1 is an essential protein for maintaining blood pressure homeostasis. In conclusion, CTRP1 is a novel, anti-hypotensive vasoconstrictor that increases blood pressure during dehydration-induced hypotension.
The formation of new blood vessels, angiogenesis, is an essential process during development and disease. Angiogenesis is well known as a crucial step in tumor growth and progression. Angiogenesis is induced by hypoxic conditions and regulated by the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1). The expression of HIF-1 correlates with hypoxia-induced angiogenesis as a result of the induction of the major HIF-1 target gene, vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF). In this review, a brief overview of the mechanism of angiogenesis is discussed, focusing on the regulatory processes of the HIF-1 transcription factor. HIF-1 consists of a constitutively expressed HIF-1 beta(HIF-1β) subunit and an oxygen-regulated HIF-1 alpha(HIF-1α) subunit. The stability and activity of HIF-1α are regulated by the interaction with various proteins, such as pVHL, p53, and p300/CBP as well as by post-translational modifications, hydroxylation, acetylation, and phosphorylation. It was recently reported that HIF-1α binds a co-activator of the AP-1 transciption factor, Jab-1, which inhibits the p53-dependent degradation of HIF-1 and enhances the transcriptional activity of HIF-1 and the subsequent VEGF expression under hypoxic conditions. ARD1 acetylates HIF-1α and stimulates pVHL-mediated ubiquitination of HIF-1α. With a growing knowledge of the molecular mechanisms in this field, novel strategies to prevent tumor angiogenesis can be developed, and form these, new anticancer therapies may arise.
Four MOFs functionalized with 1-Me, 1-Pr, 1-Ph, and 1-$PhCF_3$ were prepared through post-synthetic modifications of a metal-organic framework (MOF), UMCM-1-$NH_2$ (1) with acetic, butyric, benzoic, and 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzoic anhydrides, respectively. Methane adsorption measurements between 253 and 298 K at pressures up to 1 bar indicated that both 1-Ph and 1-$PhCF_3$ adsorbed more $CH_4$ than the parent MOF, 1. All the functionalized MOFs adsorbed more $CO_2$ than 1 under conditions similar to the $CH_4$ test. The introduction of functional groups promoted adsorption of both $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ despite significantly reducing Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area: 4170 (1), 3550 (1-Me), 2900 (1-Pr), 3680 (1-Ph), and 3520 $m^2/g$ (1-$PhCF_3$). Electron-withdrawing aromatic groups (1-Ph, 1-$PhCF_3$) more effectively enhanced $CO_2$ adsorption than electron-donating alkyl groups (1-Me, 1-Pr). In particular, 1-Ph adsorbed 23% more $CO_2$ at 298 K and 50% more at 253 K than 1.
In this paper we establish some recurrence relations satisfied by quotient moments of upper record values from the exponential distribution. Let $\{X_n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with a common continuous distribution function F(x) and probability density function(pdf) f(x). Let $Y_n=max\{X_1,\;X_2,\;{\cdots},\;X_n\}$ for $n{\geq}1$. We say $X_j$ is an upper record value of $\{X_n,\;n{\geq}1\}$, if $Y_j>Y_{j-1}$, j > 1. The indices at which the upper record values occur are given by the record times {u(n)}, $n{\geq}1$, where u(n)=min\{j{\mid}j>u(n-1),\;X_j>X_{u(n-1)},\;n{\geq}2\} and u(1) = 1. Suppose $X{\in}Exp(1)$. Then $\Large{E\;\left.{\frac{X^r_{u(m)}}{X^{s+1}_{u(n)}}}\right)=\frac{1}{s}E\;\left.{\frac{X^r_{u(m)}}{X^s_{u(n-1)}}}\right)-\frac{1}{s}E\;\left.{\frac{X^r_{u(m)}}{X^s_{u(n)}}}\right)}$ and $\Large{E\;\left.{\frac{X^{r+1}_{u(m)}}{X^s_{u(n)}}}\right)=\frac{1}{(r+2)}E\;\left.{\frac{X^{r+2}_{u(m)}}{X^s_{u(n-1)}}}\right)-\frac{1}{(r+2)}E\;\left.{\frac{X^{r+2}_{u(m-1)}}{X^s_{u(n-1)}}}\right)}$.

Purpose: This study was done to explore the predictors asssociated with Korean women smokers' intentions to quit smoking. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study including 3,578 women smokers. Data from the 2010 Community Health Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were examined and analyzed using SPSS 21.0 for multiple logistic regression. Results: Of the women smokers 52.2% reported having an intention to quit smoking but only 3.9% had received education in smoking cessation. In the logistic analysis, factors associated with intention to quit smoking were age (Odds ratio and 95% [confidence interval]: 0.97 [0.96-0.98]), health-related quality of life (OR=2.39 [1.14-5.03]), perceived stress (OR=1.11 [1.00-1.22]), marital status (OR=0.93 [.86-1.00]), age of starting to smoke (OR=1.14 [1.04-1.24]), number of cigarettes per day (OR=0.84 [0.76-0.93]), exposure to smoking-quitting campaigns (OR=1.48 [1.22-1.80]), previous attempts at weight-control (OR=1.37 [1.15-1.63]), frequency of alcohol use (OR=1.16 [1.01-1.34]), hypercholesterolemia (OR=1.62 [1.18-2.24]), experiences of trying to quit smoking (OR=4.04 [3.45-4.73]), and regular medical check-up (OR=1.13 [1.03-1.43]). Conclusion: Identifying factors associated with the intentions to quit smoking provides possibilities for shaping effective policies and programs to increase smoking cessation among Korean women.
It was intended to closely examine an effect that a change in the concentration of culture medium had on the potato(Solanum tuberosum L.) plantlet growth in the microponic system so as to mass-produce the virus-free plant of new variety 'Saebong' for potato processing. The adjusted concentration of potato culture medium was 0.2, 0.6, 1.0, 1.4, 1.8, and $14.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. And potato seedling was cut into pieces of 1.5 cm in length, which included 2 growth points and leaves. And each was explanted in glass vial of 50 mL. And experiments were carried out twice for 18 days or 21days. Culture medium of 2ml was put in the container respectively. And 1 mL was added after 10 days. And in terms of cultivation environment, the experiment was carried out at the day length of 16 hours at the temperature of $23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ under the white LED light of $40{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The concentration of culture medium in the experiment I was EC 0.2, 1.0, $14dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and was adjusted to 0.6, 1.0, 1.4, $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the experiment II. The results showed that the survival rate of plantlet was 90% at $0.2dS^2m^{-1}$, 100% at $0.6dS^2m^{-1}$, 100% at $1.0dS^2m^{-1}$. 0% at $1.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, 0% at $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. and 0% at $14.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ after 7 days. With regard to the explanted potato seedling, in case of the treatment where the electrical conductivity of culture medium was adjusted to $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, root developed 2 days after transplantation. And the plantlet vigorously grew into strong plant that had 7 leaves, length of 5cm, and fresh weight of 0.5 g after 18 days. In case of the treatment where the concentration of culture medium was adjusted to $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, the root plantlets developed 4 days after transplantation. And those grew into plant that had 7 leaves and fresh weight of 0.2 g after 21 days. Therefore, we found that it is effective to control potato culture medium by adjusting its electrical conductivity to $0.6{\sim}1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ for the mass production of virus-free potato seedling in the microponic system.
Five representative virulent phages (J1, TK93, K1, PD5, and CP1) and one temperate phage (.phi.1043) of Lactobacillus casei were compared to each other by analyzing the agarose gel electrophoretic patterns of restriction enzyme-digested phage DNAs. Nucleic acids of all the tested phages were double stranded DNA. DNAs of J1, TK93, K1, and ${\phi}$ 1043 phages had a size of about 42kb, but the size of PD5 and CP1 DNAs was avout 140kb. J1, TK93, K1, PD5, CP1, and ${\phi}$ 1043 DNAs were digested to 13, 13, 11, 14, 14, and 12 fragments by EcoR1, respectively, and showed its characteristec restriction patterns. Cohesive ends were present in J1, TK93, and ${\phi}$ 1043, but were absent in K1, PD5, and CP1. Restriction maps of J1 and TK93 DNAs showed nearly complete homology and their evolutionary relationship based upon the restriction analysis was discussed.
