침전법으로 제조한 $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$계 세라믹스의 열충격 거동 (Thermal Shock Behavior of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ Ceramics Prepared by a Precipitation Method)

  • A precipitation method, one of the most effective liquid phase reaction methods, was adopted in order to prepare high-tech Al2O3/ZrO2 composite ceramics, and the effects of stress-induced phase transformation of ZrO2 on thermal shock behavior of Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics were investigated. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Metal hydroxides were obtained by single precipitation(process A) and co-precipitation(process B) method at the condition of pH=7, and the composition of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was fixed as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). Critical temperature difference showing rapid strength degradation by thermal shock showed higher value in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(process A : 20$0^{\circ}C$, process B : 215$^{\circ}C$) than in Al2O3(175$^{\circ}C$). The improvement of thermal shock property for Al2O3/ZrO2 composites was mainly due to the increase of strength at room temperature by adding ZrO2. The strength degradation was more severe for the sample with higher strength at room temperature. Crack initiation energies by thermal shock showed higher values in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites than in Al2O3 ceramics due to increase of fracture toughness by ZrO2.

  • The mechanical properties of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites fabricated by RBAO(reaction bonded aluminium oxide) process were investigated. As the amount of ZrO2 increased the sinstered density of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites decreased slightly, but wear resistance was enhanced. Bending strength of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites increased in proportion to the amount of al in case of a fixed ZrO2 content. When the amount of Al was fixed bending strength reached its maximum value at 25 wt% ZrO2. The fracture toughness(K1c) increased with increasing content of ZrO2, but decreased with increasing Al amount. On the other hand, the fracture mode of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was the mixed mode of inter-and transgranular fracture.

$Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiC$ Whisker 복합재료에서의 R-curve 거동에 관한 연구 (Study on the R-curve Behaviour in $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiC$ Whisker Comosite)

  • R-curve measurements were performed on Al2O3(matrix)-ZrO2-SiC whisker composite and Al2O3-ZrO2, Al2O3-SiC whisker composites in the favor of comparing the effect of ZrO2 and SiC whisker, as a second phase, to Al2O3 matrix. Al2O3-SiC whisker and Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC whisker were fabricated by hot pressing at 1$700^{\circ}C$, 15MPa and Al2O3-ZrO2 by pressureless sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. A controlled flaw/strength technique was utilized to determine fracture resistance as a function of crack extension and R-curve behaviour was determined from the relationship which is KR=K0(Δa)m. R-curveresults were KR=6.173$\times$Δa0.031 for Al2O3-ZrO2, KR=18.796$\times$Δa0.172 for Al2O3-SiC whisker and KR=11.96$\times$Δa0.110 for Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC whisker composite. From the analysis of R-curve and expeirmental data above three composites, it is found that R-curve behaviour of Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC whisker composite was dominated initially by the strengthening effect of ZrO2 and after, some extended crack were influenced by the effect of SiC whisker. Analysis of SEM and X-ray data revealed that whisker bridging in the crack wake and whisker pull-out mechanisms were the main mechanism for the R-curve behaviour.

ZrO2의 고분자화 분산법을 이용한 Al2O3/ZrO2요업체의 제조 (Fabrication of Al2O3/ZrO2Ceramics by the Polymerization Dispersion Process)

  • Al$_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$복합체의 기계적 성질 향상을 위하여 분산되는 ZrO$_2$상을 Zr-Y-polyester의 고분자화(polyesterization) 공정(Pechin법)을 이용하여 알루미나 기지 중에 초미립으로 균질하게 분산시키기 위한 방안을 고찰하여 보았다. 일반적으로 공침법에 의해 제조되는 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ 복합체의 경우 초기 ZrO$_2$입자의 크기가 매우 작아도 알루미나 내에 분산되는 ZrO$_2$입자가 소결시에 비교적 빠르게 성장 및 입자간의 응집이 발생하게 되며 이로 인해 분산의 불균일을 유발하여 미세하고 균질한 복합체를 얻기가 힘들다. 따라서 상용 이소결성 $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$분말(Sumitomo.AES-11(0.5$mu extrm{m}$))에 ZrO(NO$_3$)$_2$와 Y(NO$_3$)$_3$를 citric acid/ethylene glycol과 혼합한 polyesterization시켜 $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$입자 표면에 미세하고 균질하게 코팅 형태로 부착되도록 하였다. 이를 90$0^{\circ}C$에서 하소한 후 1450∼1$600^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 소결하여 미세한 ZrO$_2$입자가 매우 균질하게 분산된 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ 복합체를 제조하였으며 이의 기계적 성질을 관찰하였다.

  • ZrO$_2$가 분산된 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ 복합체의 기계적 성질을 향상시키기 위하여 분산되는 ZrO2의 입자크기를 공침법에 의해 초미립으로 균질하게 분산시키기 위한 방안을 고찰하여 보았다. 일반적으로 $Al_2$O$_3$와 ZrO$_2$ 분말의 기계적혼합에 의해 제조되는 경우 분산되는 ZrO$_2$ 출발입자의 크기도 크고 소결시에도 비교적 빠르게 성장하므로 본 연구에서는 상용의 이소결성 $\alpha$-Al$_2$0$_3$ 분말(Sumitomo:AES-11(0.5$mu extrm{m}$)) 및 저온 소결용 초미립 알루미나(Taimei Chemical(0.22$\mu\textrm{m}$))에 ZrOC1$_2$. 8$H_2O$ 와 Y(NO$_3$)$_3$를 pH 9.5의 조건에서 공침하여 $\alpha$-Al$_2$0$_3$입자 표면에 초미립의 미세한 Zr(OH)$_4$ 침전 입자가 부착되도록 하였다. 이를 150$0^{\circ}C$-1$600^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 소결하여 작은 크기의 ZrO$_2$ 입자가 균질하게 분산된 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ 복합체를 제조하였으며 이의 기계적성질을 관찰하였다.

  • The alumina-zirconia composite powders of core particle ZrO2 coated with Al2O3 were prepared by the hydrolysis-deposition of the mixed aluminum salt solution of Al2(SO4)3-Al(NO3)3-Urea. The effects of hydrolysis reaction and coating parameters on characteristics of coated powders and composites were also investigated. The degree of coating could be estimated from the ratio of tetra-/mono-ZrO2 present at the room temperature after heat-treating coated powders at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and the result of TEM observations. When the content of ZrO2 in the dispersed coating system, the coating time, and the volume ratio of water/solution were 50 mg/g, 180 min, and 5, respectively the coating efficiency was maximum (the ratio of tetra-/mono-ZrO2 was 87/13). The relative densities of coated Al2O3-ZrO2 composites sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs were about 91~98% and the maximum ratio of tetra-/mono-ZrO2 in Al2O3-20wt% ZrO2 composites was 62/38.

  • Al2O3/ZrO2-Spinel composites were prepared by infiltrating magnesium sulfate solution into the porous preform made from Al2O3-20wt% ZrO2 composite powders derived through an emulsion route. The microstructure and composition of the modified composites could be controlled by manipulating the presingtering temperature of the preform, infiltration time, and so on. It was found that spinel phases were concentrated near the surface than in the interior of the Al2O3/ZrO2-Spinel composites infiltrated for 6hrs, while spinel phases were uniformly distributed in the comosites infiltrated for 2 days. The relative density and fracture toughness of the composite infiltrated for 6 hrs were 98.6% and 7.2MN/m3/2, respectively.

  • Al2O3-ZrO2(ZTA) composites were fabricated by a surface-induced coating of the precursor for the ZrO2 phase on the kinetically stable colloid particles of Al2O3. The fabricated composites were characterized by a uniform spatial distribution of the dispersed ZrO2 phase and by the absence of large ZrO2 grains throughout the Al2O3 matrix. The fracture toughness (KIC) and the bending strength of ZTA composites sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, respectively, were 5.6 MPa.m1/2 (for 20 wt% ZrO2) and 600 MPa (for 15wt% ZrO2). The fraction of tetragonal ZrO2 phase decreases as the total content of ZrO2, suggesting that both the stress-induced tlongrightarrowm transformation and the microcrack nucleation contribute to the toughening of the ZTA composites fabricated by the surface-induced coating.

  • Mechanical property enhancing mechanisms of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ two phase ceramic composites were studied for several compositions of different $ZrO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ ratio. Microstructural analysis of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_3$(pure) composites indicated that pre-existing microcrack due to larger $ZrO_2$ particle at grain boundary extended along alumina grain boundaries within process zone. Microcracks also nucleated when very small $ZrO_2$ particles at the grain boundaries transformed to monoclinic phase at near of main crack tip. These types of microcracks could contribute to the toughening achieved by creating additional crack surface area during crack propagation. Microstructural analyses also showed that the average grain size and abnormal grain size of $Al_2O_3$ were decreased with increasing $ZrO_2$ vol% in $Al_2O_3$ matrix. As a result it could be concluded as follows In TEX>$Al_2O_3-ZrO_3$(pure) system 1. Microcrack nucleation (stress-induced microcracking) and extension was effective mechanism for absorpiton of fracture energy 2, More narrow distribution and smaller grain size of $Al_2O_3$ due to $ZrO_2$particles mainly contributed to main-tatin the strength and hardness.

$Al_2$$O_3$/$ZrO_2$적층복합체의 균열생성 및 전파거동 (Crack Formation and Propagation Behavior of $Al_2$$O_3$/$ZrO_2$Laminate Composites)

  • 연속슬립캐스팅 및 상압소결법으로 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$적층복합체를 제조하였으며, 적층복합체에서 ZrO$_2$층을 단사정, 정방정 및 입방정으로 각각 달리 적층하여 균열생성 및 전파 거동에 미치는 ZrO$_2$상의 영향을 고찰하였다. 균열 생성은 냉각시 $Al_2$O$_3$층과 ZrO$_2$층 간의 열팽창 계수의 차이에 의한 열적불일치응력이 가장 큰 요인으로 작용하였다. 적층체 내에 존재하는 균열은 tetra-ZrO$_2$의 경우 적층두께 조절로 가능하였으며, cubic-ZrO$_2$의 경우는 냉각속도 조절로 균열밀도로 크게 낮출 수 있었다. $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$적층체를 구성하는 세가지 ZrO$_2$상(mono, tetra, cubic)들 중에서 cubic-ZrO$_2$가 포함된 적층체의 경우 $Al_2$O$_3$와 ZrO$_2$계면에 형성된 잔류압축응력으로 인한 균열굴절 효과를 얻을 수 있었다.
