Assessment of natural radioactivity in soil and olive mill pomace utilizing nal (TI) gamma-ray spectrometry and low background alpha/beta counting system

  • The study conducted in the northwest region of Jordan aimed to assess the levels of natural radioactivity in soil and olive mill pomace (OMP) samples. The researchers used Nal (TI) gamma-ray spectrometry to measure the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs in the samples. The average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs in the soil samples were found to be 18.624 ± 5.82, 12.276 ± 5.728, 518.33 ± 212.57, and 0.140 ± 0.09 (Bq, kg-1), respectively. In the OMP samples, the average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were 7.272 ± 4.386, 3.454 ± 1.503, and 169.997 ± 81.873 (Bq kg-1), respectively, and no 137Cs was detected. The study also investigated fundamental parameters associated with radon, specifically the radon emanation coefficient (RnEC) and radon mass exhalation rate (Ex). The RnEC values ranged from 0.621 to 0.78 (Bq kg-1), with an average value of 0.71 ± 0.06 (Bq kg-1). The estimated Ex from the soil samples ranged from 65.83 to 124.86 (mBq kg-1h-1), with an average value of 99.74 ± 21.73 (mBq kg-1h-1). Regarding radiological hazards, the study examined various parameters, including radium equivalent activity, external and internal hazard indices, gamma and alpha indices, absorbed gamma dose rate, and excess lifetime cancer risk. All of these assessed values were found to be below the worldwide recommended limits for radiological safety. Additionally, the study analyzed the concentrations of gross alpha and gross beta radioactivities in soil and OMP samples. The soil samples had an average gross alpha activity of 4.642 ± 1.04 (Bq kg-1) and an average gross beta activity of 48.13 ± 14.50 (Bq kg-1). The OMP samples showed an average gross alpha activity of 0.32 ± 0.27 (Bq kg-1) and an average gross beta activity of 59.19 ± 12.94 (Bq kg-1). Overall, the obtained results are crucial for evaluating the radiological risks associated with natural radioactivity in the northwest region of Jordan. The findings establish baseline data for comparison and reference for radioactivity levels in the environment.

Analysis of the Crystal Structure and the Relation with the Temperature Coefficient au_\varepsilon$ in $BaORe_2O_3TiO_2$ (Re=La, Nd, Y) Microwave Dielectric Ceramics ($BaORe_2O_3TiO_2$ (Re=La, Nd, Y)계 고주파 유전체의 결정구조 분석 및 온도계수 au_\varepsilon$와의 관련성)

  • Crystal structures of tungsten-bronze type microwave dielectric ceramics, $BaOLa_2O_34TiO_2$ (BLT) and $BaO(Nd_{0.77}Y_{0.23})_4TiO_2$ (B(NY)T), were analysed using the Rietveld method. The most relibale refinement was obtained by refining the cation and anion positions from the x-ray and neutron diffraction data, respectively. The ambiguites inherent in the refined crystal structure by Mateeva et al. were resolved. The $BaORe_2O_34TiO_2$ structure consiste of $3\times2$ perovskite blocks and 4 pentagon-channels. The Ti-O6 octahedrons are distroted and tilted, which, consequently, induces the displacements of Ba and Re ions producing the superlattics (c$\approx$ 7.6 $\AA$). The B(NY)T showed more severely tilted Ti-O6 octahedrons. The relative dielectric constant $\varepsilon_{\gamma}$ and temperature coefficient $\tau_\varepsilon$ are 109.5 and-$180 ppm/^{\circ}C$ in BLT, 76 and $+40 ppm/^{\circ}C$ in B(NY)T, respectively. The small Re ions produced a positive $\tau_\varepsilon$. The relation between $\tau_\varepsilon$ and the octahedron tilting in complex perovskite is discussed for the tungsten bronze type structure.

Design and optimization of thermal neutron activation device based on 5 MeV electron linear accelerator

  • The optimized design of a Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) system, including Delayed Gamma NAA (DGNAA) and Prompt Gamma NAA (PGNAA), has been proposed in this research based on Mevex Linac with 5 MeV electron energy and 50 kW power as a neutron source. Based on the MCNPX 2.6 simulation, the optimized configuration contains; tungsten as an electron-photon converter, BeO as a photoneutron target, BeD2 and plexiglass as moderators, and graphite as a reflector and collimator, as well as lead as a gamma shield. The obtained thermal neutron flux at the beam port is equal to 2.06 × 109 (# /cm2.s). In addition, using the optimized neutron beam, the detection limit has been calculated for some elements such as H-1, B-10, Na-23, Al-27, and Ti-48. The HPGe Coaxial detector has been used to measure gamma rays emitted by nuclides in the sample. By the results, the proposed system can be an appropriate solution to measure the concentration and toxicity of elements in different samples such as food, soil, and plant samples.

  • As a class of materials, Ni-base superalloys are among the most difficult metal alloys to forge together with refractory metals and cobalt-base superalloys. The mechanical properties of Ni-base superalloys depend very much on grain size and the strengthening phases, $\gamma$' ($Ni_3$(Al,Ti)-type) and $\gamma$".($Ni_3$Nb-type). Especially, the control of grain size remains as a sole means for the control of mechanical properties. The grain size and distribution changes of the wrought superalloys during hot working and heat treatment are mainly controlled by the recrystallization and grain growth behaviors. In this presentation, prediction technology of grain size through the computer-aided process design, and numerical modeling for predicting the microstructure evolution of Ni-base superalloy during hot working were introduced. Also, some case studies were dealt with actual forming processes of Ni-base superalloys.

  • $\gamma-Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, ZrO에 Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru의 귀금속촉매를 분산하였으며, 촉매 분산은 과잉용액함침법으로 제조하였다. 저온에서 높은 산화능을 지닌 최소화된 귀금속의 함침량을 도출하기 위하여 연구를 수행하였다. 귀금속 촉매의 조성에 대한 영향을 도출하기 위하여 Rh, Pt, Pd, Ru에 대하여 조성과 함침량에 대하여 연구를 수행하였다. 충전층 반응기 및 모노리스 반응기를 이용한 촉매산화반응 실험결과 50% 전환온도 및 90% 전환온도를 측정한 결과 최적의 조성은 Pt-Rh /$Al_2O_3$ 촉매로 판명되었다.

Gas-phase Dehydration of Glycerol over Supported Silicotungstic Acids Catalysts

  • The gas-phase dehydration of glycerol to acrolein was carried out over 10 wt % HSiW catalysts supported on different supports, viz. $\gamma-Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$, $SiO_2$, AC, $CeO_2$ and MgO. The same reaction was also conducted over each support without HSiW for comparison. Several characterization techniques, $N_2$-physisorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia ($NH_3$-TPD), temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) with mass spectroscopy and CHNS analysis were employed to characterize the catalysts. The glycerol conversion generally increased with increasing amount of acid sites. Ceria showed the highest 1-hydroxyacetone selectivity at $315^{\circ}C$ among the various metal oxides. The supported HSiW catalyst showed superior catalytic activity to that of the corresponding support. Among the supported HSiW catalysts, HSiW/$ZrO_2$ and HSiW/$SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ showed the highest acrolein selectivity. In the case of HSiW/$ZrO_2$, the initial catalytic activity was recovered after the removal of the accumulated carbon species at $550^{\circ}C$ in the presence of oxygen.

The Effects of Aging Heat Treatments on the Hardness and Electrocemical Corrosion for the Nimonic 80A Superalloy (Nimonic 80A 초내열합금의 경도와 전기화학적부식에 미치는 시효열처리의 효과)

  • In this paper the Hardness and Electro-chemical corrosion of the Nimonic 80A superalloy were studied. It aging heat treatments was carried out at $650^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, $750^{\circ}C$,$800^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ with different time of 20min , 30min 1hour, 2hours, 4hours, and 16hours additionally 64hours and 128hours at $650^{\circ}C$. The obtained results were as follows; 1. As aging temperature increased the time for the maximum hardness was reduced from 128hours at $650^{\circ}C$ to 30min at $850^{\circ}C$ whereas the highest hardness was reduced from Hv 381 at $650^{\circ}C$ to Hv 321 at $850^{\circ}C$. 2. In the Electro-chemical corrosion test as a function of aging heat treatment time and tem-perature the corrosion potential was reversely proportional to Hardness which indicated the effects of ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ coherency of base material and precipitate. 3. Initiation point of the pitting was observed at grain boundary twin boundary and near${\gamma}'$ pre-cipitates. The results of composition analysis by EDS at this point indicated that sulphur originat-ed from 1N $H_2SO_4$ solution was found in depletion at the grain boundaries and the pit which arouse in the near precipitates were lack of Al Ti and Ni which are the main element of ${\gamma}'$ The depletion of such element was cause breakdown of passive film.

Application of Gamma Ray Densitometry in Powder Metallurgy

  • The most important industrial application of gamma radiation in characterizing green compacts is the determination of the density. Examples are given where this method is applied in manufacturing technical components in powder metallurgy. The requirements imposed by modern quality management systems and operation by the workforce in industrial production are described. The accuracy of measurement achieved with this method is demonstrated and a comparison is given with other test methods to measure the density. The advantages and limitations of gamma ray densitometry are outlined. The gamma ray densitometer measures the attenuation of gamma radiation penetrating the test parts (Fig. 1). As the capability of compacts to absorb this type of radiation depends on their density, the attenuation of gamma radiation can serve as a measure of the density. The volume of the part being tested is defined by the size of the aperture screeniing out the radiation. It is a channel with the cross section of the aperture whose length is the height of the test part. The intensity of the radiation identified by the detector is the quantity used to determine the material density. Gamma ray densitometry can equally be performed on green compacts as well as on sintered components. Neither special preparation of test parts nor skilled personnel is required to perform the measurement; neither liquids nor other harmful substances are involved. When parts are exhibiting local density variations, which is normally the case in powder compaction, sectional densities can be determined in different parts of the sample without cutting it into pieces. The test is non-destructive, i.e. the parts can still be used after the measurement and do not have to be scrapped. The measurement is controlled by a special PC based software. All results are available for further processing by in-house quality documentation and supervision of measurements. Tool setting for multi-level components can be much improved by using this test method. When a densitometer is installed on the press shop floor, it can be operated by the tool setter himself. Then he can return to the press and immediately implement the corrections. Transfer of sample parts to the lab for density testing can be eliminated and results for the correction of tool settings are more readily available. This helps to reduce the time required for tool setting and clearly improves the productivity of powder presses. The range of materials where this method can be successfully applied covers almost the entire periodic system of the elements. It reaches from the light elements such as graphite via light metals (AI, Mg, Li, Ti) and their alloys, ceramics ($AI_20_3$, SiC, Si_3N_4, $Zr0_2$, ...), magnetic materials (hard and soft ferrites, AlNiCo, Nd-Fe-B, ...), metals including iron and alloy steels, Cu, Ni and Co based alloys to refractory and heavy metals (W, Mo, ...) as well as hardmetals. The gamma radiation required for the measurement is generated by radioactive sources which are produced by nuclear technology. These nuclear materials are safely encapsulated in stainless steel capsules so that no radioactive material can escape from the protective shielding container. The gamma ray densitometer is subject to the strict regulations for the use of radioactive materials. The radiation shield is so effective that there is no elevation of the natural radiation level outside the instrument. Personal dosimetry by the operating personnel is not required. Even in case of malfunction, loss of power and incorrect operation, the escape of gamma radiation from the instrument is positively prevented.

Corrosion Behavior of Stainless Steel 304, Titanium, Nickel and Aluminium in Non-Aqueous Electrolytes

  • The corrosion behavior of stainless steel 304 (SS 304), titanium, nickel and aluminium is studied by immersion and anodic polarization tests in non-aqueous electrolytes. Tetraethyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate is used as a supporting electrolyte in the three kinds of solvents. The immersion test shows that chemical corrosion rate in propylene carbonate-based electrolyte is lower than those in acetonitrile- or ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone-based electrolytes. Surface analyses do not reveal any corrosion product formed after the immersion test. In the anodic polarization tests, a higher concentration of supporting electrolyte gives a higher current density. In addition, a higher temperature increases the current density in the active region and reduces the potential range in the passive region. SS 304 shows the highest corrosion potential while Al shows the lowest corrosion potential and the highest current density in all studied conditions. Based on the conducted corrosion tests, the corrosion resistance of metal substrates in the organic solvents can be sorted in descending order as follows: SS 304 - Ti - Ni - Al.

세라믹막의 $CO_2$ 분리계수

  • 졸-겔 침지코팅 (dipcoating) 또는 가압 졸-겔 코팅 (pressurized coating) 법으로 제조한 $\gamma-Al_2O_3, SiO_2, TiO_2$ 및 aluminosilicate 복합막에 대하여 $CO_2$, He, $N_2$, 및 $O_2$ 기체 투과율과 $CO_2$ 분리계수를 측정하였다. 이들 막을 통한 모든 기체의 이동은 Knudsen 유동이 지배적이었으며 $CO_2/N_2$의 분리계수는 0.9 ~ 1.1 정도로 Knudsen 분리계수 ($CO_2/N_2$의 경우 0.8)보다 약간 높은 값을 보여주었다. $CO_2$ 분리계수를 향상시키기 위하여 silane coupling 및 산화물 도핑법에 의한 복합막의 표면개질을 시도하였으며 분리막의 재질 및 표면개질 조건에 따른 $CO_2/N_2$ 분리계수 변화를 측정 비교하였다. Silane coupling에 의한 표면개질이 $CO_2$의 표면 친화성 (affinity)에 의한 표면확산속도를 증가시키기 때문에 $CO_2$ 분리에 있어서 산화물 도핑에 의한 표면개질보다 더욱 효과적이었다.
