  • A determination method for $^{237}Np$ in spent nuclear fuel samples was developed using an isotope dilution method with $^{239}Np$ as a spike. In this method, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was taken for the $^{237}Np$ instead of the previously used alpha spectrometry. $^{237}Np$ and $^{239}Np$ were measured by ICP-MS and gamma spectrometry, respectively. The recovery yield of $^{237}Np$ in synthetic samples was $95.9{\pm}9.7$% (1S, n=4). The $^{237}Np$ contents in the spent fuel samples were 0.15, 0.25, and $1.06{\mu}g/mgU$ and these values were compared with those from ORIGEN-2 code. A fairly good agreement between the measurements (m) and calculations (c) was obtained, giving ratios (m/c) of 0.93, 1.12 and 1.25 for the three PWR spent fuel samples with burnups of 16.7, 19.0, and 55.9 GWd/MtU, respectively.

  • This study was performed to establish the analytical method of radium and radon in various environmental samples with the ${\gamma}$-ray spectrometry. The major problem in the measurements of low level ${\gamma}$-ray, such as environmental radioactivity, is the fluctuation of ${\gamma}$-ray background spectrum. To overcome this problem, a nitrogen gas was filled up in the detector chamber to reduce the background counts due to airborne radioactivities, i.e., $^{214}Pb$ and $^{214}Bi$, the daughters of $^{222}Rn$ in air. When nitrogen gas flowed around the detector, peak counts of ${\gamma}$-rays from the daughters of $^{222}Rn$ decreased about 80% below 1 MeV and about 20~50% above 1 MeV. The use of nitrogen purging results in approximately tenfold increment of sensitivity.

  • An evaluation of various radiometric methods to analyze $^{226}Ra$ in water has been employed on a set of 10 standard solutions of different concentrations in the range of $1-10Bq/L^{-1}$. The analysis was carried out using well-established procedures by means of gamma-ray, alpha-particle and liquid scintillation spectrometry. The feasibility of the various methods has been quantified in terms of relative standard error and percentage error. Correlations between the various methods have been presented and discussed. In general, good agreement was found in the results of various methodologies, which assures the accuracy of the methods and allows for the validation of instrumentation and procedures. Of the different methods adopted here, a combined procedure for the determination of $^{226}Ra$ along with $^{228}Ra$ using Quantulus 1220 ultra-low level background liquid scintillation counting gave the most accurate results.

  • Very low contents (in the range of 10-9 g/g) of Ir in mantle-derived rock samples (komatiites) were non-destructively determined by INAA coupled with coincidence gamma-ray spectrometry using 16 Ge detectors. Aliquots of the same samples were analyzed by NiS fire-assay ICP-MS for Ir and other platinum group elements. Because the INAA procedure used in this study is non-destructive and is almost free from spectral interference in gamma-ray spectrometry, the INAA values of Ir contents obtained in this study can be highly reliable. Iridium values obtained by ICP-MS were consistent with the INAA values, implying that the ICP-MS values of Ir obtained in this study are equally reliable. Under the present experimental conditions, detection limits were estimated to be 1 pg/g, which corresponds to 0.1 pg for a sample mass of 0.1 g. These levels can be even lowered by an order of magnitude, if necessary, which cannot be achieved by ICP-MS carried out in this study.

  • Exposure rates due to leakage gamma-rays from operating reactors TRIGA Mark II and III were measured in a horizontal plane by means of scintillation spectrometry using a 3"$\times$3" cylindrical Nal(T1) detector associated with a 400 channel pulse height analyzer under varied conditions of reactor operation. In determining exposure rate due to the leakage gamma-rays at each point of measurement, Moriuchi's spectrum-exposure rate conversion theory was applied instead of using conventional responce matrix method which necessitates very complicated procedures to convert a spectrum into exposure rate. The results show that a basic pattern of "typical" spectrum of the reactor leakage gamma-rays is neither affected by thermal output of the reactor, nor influenced by overall attenuation in radiation intensity. It was indicated that he attenuation of the leakage gamma-rays in air in terms of exposure rate as a whole follows an exponential law, and the total exposure rate due to the leakage gamma-rays at a certain point is nearly proportional to thermal output of the reactor. The complexity in spectrum measured for a movable core reactor, TRIGA Mark III, was analyzed through spectrum resolution, and proper judgement of the leakage gamma-rays in a complex spectrum was discussed.ctrum was discussed.

  • The isotope ratio of $^{134}Cs/^{137}Cs$ in a spent PWR fuel sample was obtained with a newly developed gamma/neutron combined measuring system at KAERI. Burnup and Pu/U ratio of the spent fuel sample were determined by using the measured isotope ratio and the burnup-isotope ratio correlation equations calculated from the ORIGEN-ARP computer code. The results were compared and evaluated with the chemically determined burnup and Pu/U ratio. As a result of the comparative evaluation, the nondestructively determined burnup and Pu/U ratio values showed a good agreement with the chemically obtained results to within a 4.5% and 0.8% difference, respectively.

  • Jeju Island is a significant area as a reference site of in situ gamma spectrometry because there are a number of open spaces which includes $^{137}Cs$ above a certain level. In this paper, the pasture within the Hallasan National Park was selected as one of the open spaces of Jeju Island. The homogeneity of $^{137}Cs$ at the site was assessed by analysis of variance on count and by radioactivity concentration obtained through in situ gamma spectrometry. For this purpose, the count of a total of 79 points at 3 sites were measured with less than count uncertainty of 5% for 2000 seconds. In the results of the analysis of variance, the 2 sites were homogeneous, and the remaining 1 site can be specified to be homogeneous through the adjustment of measuring range. The distribution of radioactivity concentration calculated by in situ gamma spectrometry were $53.7{\sim}93.2Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $30.5{\sim}61.0Bq\;kg^{-1}$ and $48.8{\sim}102Bq\;kg^{-1}$ at each site.

  • This study demonstrated the stabilizing role of a cyclodextrin on Keggin $[PW_{12}O_{40}]^{3-}$ via hydrogen bonding complexation unveiled by ESI-MS. The distinctive fragmentation pathways of the $\{PW_{12}\}/{\gamma}$-CD complexes from that of discrete $[PW_{12}O_{40}]^{3-}$ showed that the so-called "weak" non-covalent interactions can effectively change the dissociation chemistry of POM in the gas phase. The influence of different types of solvents and organic additives such as ${\gamma}$-CD on the stability of Keggin $[PW_{12}O_{40}]^{3-}$ was also addressed firstly by ESI-MS.

  • Efficiency calibration is a fundamental procedure in gamma spectrometric measurement. Experimental technique for efficiency calibration transfer in gamma spectrometer along different geometries and volumes has been developed and validated in this work. The developed technique offers simple and easy procedures to overcome several problems encountered in efficiency calibration of gamma spectrometer such as rate-related correction and different sample volumes. The validation shows that application of the developed technique has a precision of 95%.
