  • The antioxidant activity was analyzed in gamma-irradiated cooking juices. Because the activities of antioxidants have been attributed to various mechanisms, different assay methods including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), have been conducted and compared. All of these antioxidant assay showed that the antioxidant activity of cooking juice was increased by gamma-irradiation. To investigate this increase of antioxidative activity, the protein was extracted from cooking juices and its antioxidant activity was measured. From the results, it was thought that the modification of protein in cooking juiced by irradiation caused the increase of antioxidant activity of cooking juice. Therefore, gamma irradiation could be an promising method for a sterilization of cooking juice with increased antioxidant activity.

  • When MOS devices is exposed to radiation, radiation effects of P-type MOS capacitor can cause modulation and/or degradation in devices characteristics and its operating life. The oxide layer is grown in $O_2$+T.C.E. and its thickness ranges from 40 to 80 nm. Irradiations on MOS capacitor were performed by Cobalt-60 gamma ray source and total dose ranges from $10^4$ to $10^8$ rads. The radiation effect on electrical conduction characteristics(I-V) in MOS capacitor was measured as a function of gate oxide thickness and total dose. From the experimental result, I-V characteristics is found to be influenced strongly by total dose in irradiated p-type MOS capacitors. The ohmic current is dependant on of total dose in irradiated P-type MOS capacitors. This results are explained using surface states at interface radiation-induced traps.

  • In recent years, the automatic remote control controller of the gamma ray irradiator malfunctions, and radiation workers are continuously exposed to radiation exposure accidents. In the non-destructive testing field, much time and resources are invested in establishing a radioactive source monitoring system in order to prevent potential incidents of radiation. In this study, the gamma-ray response properties of the lead monoxide-based radiation detector were estimated through monte carlo simulation as a previous study for the development of a radioactive source location monitoring system that can be applied universally to various non-destructive testing equipment. As a result of the study, the optimized thickness of the radiation detector varies according to the gamma-ray energy emitted from the radioactive source, and the optimized thickness gradually increases with increasing energy. In conclusion, the optimized thickness of the lead monoxide-based radiation detector was $200{\mu}m$ for the Ir-192, $150{\mu}m$ for the Se-75 and $300{\mu}m$ for the Co-60. Based on these results, the appropriate thickness of lead monoxide-based radiation detector considering secondary-electron equilibrium was evaluated to be $300{\mu}m$ for general application. These results can be used as a basic data for determining the appropriate thickness required in the radiation detector when developing a radiation source location monitoring system for universal application to various non-destructive testing equipment in the future.

  • In the non-destructive inspection field, we invest a lot of time and resources in developing the radiation source system to ensure the safety of the workers. However, the probability of accidents is still high. In order to prevent potential radiation accidents in advance, it is necessary to directly verify the position of the radiation source, but the research is still insufficient. In this study, we developed a monitoring system that can detect the position of the radiation source in the source guide tube in the gamma-ray irradiator. The characteristics of the radiation detector are estimated by monte carlo simulation. As a result, the radiation detector for Ir-192 gamma-ray energy was analyzed to have secondary electron equilibrium at $150{\mu}m$ regardless of the semiconductor material. Also, it is expected that the gamma ray response characteristic is the best in $HgI_2$. These results are expected to be used as a basis for determining the optimal thickness of the radiation detector located in the detection part of the future monitoring system. In addition, when developing a monitoring system based on this, radiation workers can easily recognize the danger and secure safety, as well as prevent and preemptively respond to potential radiation accidents.

  • Preliminary study was perfomed to develop a biocompatible filter material using radiation energy. Electrosppined PLLA nano sheets were surface-modificated with hydrophilic groups(acrylic group) by using radiation. The physico-chemical and morphological characteristics of modified PLLA sheets were measured by ATR, SEM, contact angle, and hydrophilic (acryl group) introduction rate (TBO). As a result, there was no morphological(fiber structure) structure change due to radiation, and it was confirmed that an acrylic group was successfully introduced onto PLLA fiber sheet by radiation.

  • Terpenes constitute a large class of secondary metabolites in plants. The Oryza sativa terpene synthase is a vital gene in plant defense response. In this study, the molecular and physiological functions of Oryza sativa terpene synthase 30 (OsTPS30, LOC_Os08g07080) were investigated after exposure of the seeds and plants to gamma-rays. The OsTPS30 expression was slightly induced at 200 Gray (Gy), but was significantly induced at 400 Gy. The total terpenoid was synthesized more in OsTPS30-overexpressing (OX-OsTPS30) Arabidopsisthaliana plants than in wild-type (WT) plants. The OX-OsTPS30 plants exhibited resistance to gamma-rays, as compared to WT. The OX-OsTPS30 plants had significantly increased height and weight after gamma irradiation. Additionally, the activity of antioxidant enzymes was increased more in OX OsTPS30 plants than in WT plants after gamma irradiation. Furthermore, the OsTPS30-GFP fusion protein was mostly localized in the chloroplast, suggesting that OsTPS30 is putative MEP pathway-related terpene synthase.

  • Antibiotics have been issued recently in water environments because of potential impacts on ecosystem and public health. This study was aimed to investigating the degradation of antibiotics such as tetracycline, lincomycin, sulfamethazine and cephradine using gamma ray irradiation. And the toxicity before and after irradiation on antibiotics was tested in order to examine the aquatic eco-risk assessment by aquatic organisms. In addition, comparing tests on toxicity for gamma ray and UV irradiated antibiotics was conducted. Four different antibiotics were prepared by concentration of 30 mg/L with demi-water respectively. The absorption dose of gamma ray was ranged from 0.2 to 2 kGy. The concentration of four antibiotics was gradually decreased corresponding to the increase of the absorption dose. A method for toxicity assessment using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was evaluated to the most acceptable compared with methods by Daphnia magna and Microtox$^{(R)}$ in terms of sensibility. It showed that the reduction of toxicity on antibiotics treated by gamma ray was superior comparing to the test results obtained from UV treatment. By-products from antibiotics treated by gamma ray were easily decomposed by microorganism and their toxicity was also evaluated to low.

  • In this study, we used the Monte Carlo N-Particle program to simulate the gamma-ray spectra obtained from plastic scintillators holes filled with bismuth nanoparticles. We confirmed that the incorporation of bismuth nanoparticles into a plastic scintillator enhances its performance for gamma-ray spectroscopy using the subtraction method. The subtracted energy spectra obtained from the bismuth-nanoparticle-incorporated and the original plastic scintillator exhibit a distinct energy peak that does not appear in the corresponding original spectra. We varied the diameter and depth of the bismuth-filled holes to determine the optimal hole design for gamma-ray spectroscopy using the subtraction method. We evaluated the energy resolutions of the energy peaks in the gamma-ray spectra to estimate the effects of the bismuth nanoparticles and determine their optimum volume in the plastic scintillator. In addition, we calculated the peak-to-total ratio of the energy spectrum to evaluate the energy measuring limit of the bismuth nanoparticle-containing plastic scintillator using the subtraction method.
