Titanium alloys have been used for dental materials due to it's very good biocompatibility. Ti-6Al-4V alloy instead of pure titanium is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. The Ti-Nb alloys has designed and examined corrosion resistance. Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb(${\alpha}+{\beta}$type) and Ti-40wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) For the corrosion test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl, the corrosion behaviour of Ti-Nb alloys was similar to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti. 2) The corrosion resistance of Ti-20Nb alloy was better than that of CP-Ti, Ti-3Nb, Ti-40Nb alloy in 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl, solutions.
Pure titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy have been mainly used as implant materials but the cytotoxicity of V, neurotoxicity of Al resulting in Alzheimer disease had been reported. This paper was described the influence of composition of Ti-Nb alloys with 3 wt%Nb, 20 wt%Nb on the microstructure and corrosion resistance. Specimens of Ti alloys were melted in vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24hr. The alloys were rolled in $\beta$ and ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ regions. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys were evaluated by potentiodymic polarization test in 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl solutions. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The microstructure was transformed from $\alpha$ phase to ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase by adding Nb 2. The hardness of Ti-20Nb alloy was greater than Cp- Ti, Ti-3Nb alloy. 3. The corrosion resistance of Ti-20Nb alloy was better than that of Cp-Ti, Ti-3Nb alloy in 0.9%NaCl and 5%HCl solutions.
Microstructural evolution of alpha and beta phases during dynamic globularization of near-beta Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy was investigated to determine the optimum processing conditions. The submicrocrystalline alloy sheet with ${\sim}80%$ of high-angle grain boundaries was produced utilizing dynamic globularization at temperature of $600^{\circ}C$, equivalent strain rate of $10^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ and strain of 1.4. The refined structure with the gain size of ${\sim}0.4{\mu}m$ showed 25-60% enhanced mechanical compatibility as compared to those of the conventional mill-annealed or solution treated and aged microstructures.
β titanium alloys containing β stabilizing elements such as V, Nb, Ta, Mo and Fe are widely used etc, due to their excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue strength and easy formability. New metastable β titanium alloys are developed containing low-cost elements (Mo and Fe) in this study. Fe element is a strong β-stabilizer which can affect the mechanical and electrochemical properties of Ti-5Mo-xFe (x = 1, 4 wt%) alloys. These properties were analyzed in connection with microstructure and phase distribution. Ti-5Mo-4Fe alloy showed higher compression yield stress and maximum stress than Ti-5Mo-1Fe alloy due to solid-solution hardening and grain refinement hardening effect. As Fe element increased, Fe oxide formation and reduction of ${\bar{Bo}}$ (bond order) value affect the decrease of corrosion resistance. Ti-5Mo-xFe alloys were more excellent than Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy.
Phase transformation phenomenon at high temperature was investigated by using designed TiAl-Nb alloys with addition of the ${\beta}$ stabilizer. Examination of dendritic morphologies in arc-melted button ingot could reveal the crystallography of the primary solidification phase. It was found that the addition of ${\beta}$ stabilizer(Nb) shifted the high temperature region of the binary Ti-Al phase diagram to the high Al composition side so that ${\beta}$ phase forms as a primary crystal even at higher Al composition compared with the binary Ti-Al system. The ${\beta}$ was found to be the primary solidification phase for alloys with Al content less than about 52 at.%. The composition of ${\beta}$ solidification in Ti-Al-Nb ternary system could be determined from the partial liquidus projection which was constructed by observing the microstructure of arc-melted buttons. The Ti-46Al-(6, 8)Nb composition was selected for ${\beta}$ solidification and the directional solidification was performed by a floating zone-type DS apparatus at the growth rate 30 mm/hr respectively.
Both commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been widely used as biomaterials because of their excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, in recent years, vanadium has been found to cause cytotoxic effects and adverse tissue reactions, while aluminium has been associated with potential neurological disorders. A newly designed ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ type Ti alloy, Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy showed superior properties to CP Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy in the point of biomaterial, and elucidated the future uses as a biomaterial. Microstructural changes of Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy after hot-rolling, warm-rolling, solution and aging treatment were investigated. According to TEM results, the microstructures after solution treatment were composed of mostly ${\alpha}$ phase with a trace of ${\beta}$ phase due to adding ${\beta}$-phase stabilizer tantalum and niobium. The microstructures after warm-rolling is coarse and elongated ${\alpha}$ phase and hot rolling resulted in very fine ${\alpha}$ widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten. The highest value of hardness was obtained by aging treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 20hr in which microstructure consisted of very fine ${\alpha}$ phase in ${\beta}$ matrix.
The characteristics of mechanical behavior were estimated for Ti-6Al-4V alloy with four kinds of microstructure prepared with heat treatments. For this study, impact test, tensile test and fatigue crack growth test were performed, and then compared mechanical properties on the four microstructures. Furthermore, for quantitative evaluation, fractal dimensions of crack pass were obtained using the box counting method. The main results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) The microstructures exhibited equiaxed microstructure, bimodal-microstructure and lamellar microstructure by heat treatment. (2) The impact absorbed energy and elongation is superior in the bimodal-microstructure, and the hardness and tensile strength are superior in the lamellar microstructure. (3) The fatigue crack growth rate is similar to all microstructures in the low ${\Delta}K$ region. The fatigue crack growth rate of equiaxed microstructure is fastest, and that of lamellar microstructure is lowest in the high ${\Delta}K$ region. (4) The fractal dimension D of lamellar microstructure is higher then that of the equiaxed microstructure and bimodal microstructure.
The characteristics of mechanical behavior are investigated for Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Four kinds of the specimens are prepared under different heat treatments in order to produce different microstructures. In the present investigations, impact, tensile and fatigue crack growth tests are performed for each test specimen. The results obtained through the investigations are compared. Additionally fr actal dimensions of crack pass are obtained using the box counting method. The results are, 1) the microstructures shows as equiaxed, bimodal and Widmanstatten microstructures respectively, 2) the impact energy and elongation are superior fur the bimodal microstructure, and the hardness and tensile strength are superior fur the Widmanstatten microstructure, 3) the fatigue crack growth rate is similar to all microstructures in low ΔK region while that of equiaxed microstructure is the largest, and that of Widmanstatten microstructure is the lowest in high ΔK region respectively, 4) the fractal dimension D of Widmanstatten microstructure shows higher value than that of the equiaxed and bimodal microstructures under 200 magnification view of the SEM micrographs.
This study aims to find the shapes of an end-mill with low cutting temperature during the end-mill process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Such ${\alpha}-{\beta}$ titanium alloys are increasingly more used for their high tensile strength and high corrosion resistance. The cutting characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were studied using an analytical method validated by comparing the estimated cutting resistance with that from experiments. The end-mill shape was analyzed using an experimental method. The end-mill shape with low cutting resistance and low cutting temperature was confirmed by analyzing the signal-to-noise ratios for various conditions. Then, the factors with significance factor of 95% or more were determined in the variance analysis. Finally, an end-mill shape that can ensure a low cutting temperature was proposed.
Titanium alloys are the one of promising candidate materials for medium high temperature parts in the aircraft, automobile, petrochemistry and electrochemistry because of their high strength with low density in medium high temperature. In this study, the effects of aging and heat treatments on the mechanical properties of Ti-15-3 alloy in medium high temperature, which was $400^{\circ}C$, were studied. Solid solution treatment was performed at $8000^{\circ}C$ of $\beta$ phase region for 1 h and the alloy was quenched in water. The alloy was aged at $5000^{\circ}C$ of $\alpha$ and $\beta$ two-phase region for 1, 2, 4, 8, ... and 100 h to increase the mechanical property. The $\beta$ single phase was observed at all parts of specimens in Ti-15-3 alloy after ST. As the aging at $500^{\circ}C$, fine precipitates of a phase was generated from matrix of $\beta$ phase and the microstructure was consisted of weaving structure such as Widmanstiitten a phase. The most suitable aging time is 24h in$ 400^{\circ}C$. At this time, strength is 1164 MPa and elongation is about 12%. In room temperature, elongation of Ti-15-3 alloy aged at $500^{\circ}C$ for 16 h is poor (=3%) in spite of high tensile strength (1458 MPa).
