  • For the development of new synthetic method for unnatural amino acid esters, alkyl ${\alpha}$-anilinophenylacetates were synthesized through base-catalyzed hydrolysis of 1,5-diphenylhydantoins in methanol and O-alkylation of sodium ${\alpha}$-anilinophenylacetate with alkyl halides in DMF. Even though hydrolysis of hydantoin ring was undertaken under about 30-40$^{\circ}C$ in methanol, the hydantoic acid sodium salt was continuously converted to the sodium ${\alpha}$-anilinophenylacetate. • The current understanding for phase/grain boundary sliding and low-temperature/high-strain rate superplasticity of two-phase titanium alloys is summarized. The quantitative analysis on boundary sliding revealed increased sliding resistance on the order of $\alpha/\beta\;\ll\;\alpha/\alpha\;\approx\;\beta/\beta$ boundary, hence, led to the conclusion that approximately 50% alpha(or beta) volume fraction and/or grain refinement is beneficial for obtaining large superplastic elongation at low temperature and/or high strain rate. To predict the temperature for 50% alpha volume in various alpha/beta Ti, artificial neural network was applied. Finally, much enhanced superplasticity was achieved through grain refinement utilizing dynamic globularization.

  • The growth responses of materials extracted from Juniperus virginiana leaves against Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, and Streptococcus mutans were examined using impregnated paper disk agar diffusion. The biologically active constituent isolated from the J. virginiana extracts was characterized as ${\alpha}$-cedrene using various spectroscopic analyses including IR, EI-MS, and NMR. The responses varied according to the dose, chemicals, and bacterial strain tested. Methanol extracts of J. virginiana leaves exhibited a strong and moderate inhibitory activity against C. perfringens and E. coli at 5 mg/disk, respectively. However, in tests conducted with B. bifidum, B. longum, L. acidophilus, L. casei, and S. mutans, the methanol extracts showed no or weak inhibitory response. At 2 mg/disk, a-cedrene strongly inhibited the growth of C. perfringens and moderately inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. mutans, without any adverse effects on the growth of four lactic acid-bacteria. Of the commercially available compounds originating from J. virginiana leaves, cedrol and ${\alpha}$-pinene exhibited strong and moderate growth inhibition against C. perfringens, and ${\alpha}$-copaene revealed moderate growth inhibition against E. coli at 1 mg/disk. Furthermore, cedrol exhibited moderate and weak growth inhibition against S. mutans at 2 and 1 mg/disk, respectively. However, little or no activity was observed for camphene, (+)-2-carene, p-cymene, limonene, linalool, and a-phellandrene against B. bifidum, B. longum, C. perfringens, L. acidophilus, L. casei, and S. mutans at 2 mg/disk. The observed inhibitory activity of the J. virginiana leaf-extracted materials against C. perfringens, E. coli, and S. mutans may be an indication of at least one of the pharmacological actions of the J. virginiana leaf.

  • Shanmugam(1991) generalized the Poisson distribution to capture a restriction on the incidence rate $\theta$ (i.e. $\theta$$\beta$, an unknown upper limit), and named it incidence rate restricted Poisson (IRRP) distribution. Using Neyman's C($\alpha$) concept, Shanmugam then devised a hypothesis testing procedure for $\beta$ when $\theta$ remains unknown nuisance parameter. Shanmugam's C ($\alpha$) based .results involve inverse moments which are not easy tools, This article presents an alternate testing procedure based on likelihood ratio concept. It turns out that likelihood ratio test statistic offers more power than the C($\alpha$) test statistic. Numerical examples are included.

  • Purified kaolin and ${\alpha}$-$Al_2O_3$ particiles which are less then 10${\mu}$ in diameter were collected through sedimentation and mixed in the ratio of 3A-2S and then its reaction rates were measured at temperatures 1350 to 1450$^{\circ}$C. The kinetic data were correlated with Jander's equation, but not with modified Jander's equation. With mineralizer added, yield increased about 15% and activation energy decreased from 142kcal/mol to 90kcal/mol.

  • In this study, we demonstrated a characterization of ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ grown on a cone-shape patterned sapphire substrate by using the halide vapor phase epitaxy. An ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ was grown on different size of PSS and c-plane sapphire substrate for comparison to confirm the effect of PSS. In addition, growth time of ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ was gradually increased to confirm growth mechanism of ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ grown on the PSS. A growth temperature was changed to $470-550^{\circ}C$. It can be analyzed growth conditions and mechanisms on the cone-shape PSS, resulting in a significant decrease in the FWHM value of an asymmetric plane (10-14) of ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$, due to lateral growth that occurs during the growth process.

Final R = 0.0676 and $R_w$ = O.0630 for 1209 reflections > 5${\sigma}(F_o)$. In the spacial arrangement about N(13), the sum of bond angles about nitrogen is 350.9° and the nitrogen lies only 0.268(6)${\AA}$ out of S(1)-C(14)-C(17) plane. The S(1)-C(4) distance is 1.792(6)${\AA}$ and the C(4)-S(1)-N(13) angle is $106.5(3)^{\circ}$. The overall conformation of the molecule is folded with respect to sulfur.
