Preparation of Aluminum Nitride Powders and Whiskers Using Aluminum(III) Salts as a Precursor

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) powders were synthesized by using a mixture of an aluminum nitrate or sulfate salt and carbon (mole ratio of $Al^{3+}$ to carbon=L : 30). The AlN was obtained by calcining the mixture under a flow of nitrogen in the temperature range 1100-1$600^{\circ}C$ and then burning out the residual carbon. The process of conversion of the salt to AlN was monitored by XRD and $^{27}$ Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. The salt decomposed to ${\gamma}$-alumina and then converted to AlN without phase transition from ${\gamma}$-to-$\alpha$-alumina. $^{27}$ Al MAS NMR spectroscopy shows that the formation of AlN commenced at 110$0^{\circ}C$. AlN powders obtained from the sulfate salt were superior to those from the nitrate salt in terms of homogeneity and crystallinity. A very small amount of AlN whiskers was obtained by calcining a mixture of an aluminum sulfate salt and carbon at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 h, and the growth of the whiskers is well explained by the particle-to-particle self-assembly mechanism.

급격산화법에 의해 제조된 $\delta$-FeOOH의 열분해과정 (The Thermal Decomposition Process of $\delta$-FeOOH Prepared by Rapid Oxidation Method)

  • The precipitate of FeCl2.4H2O and NaOH, Fe(OH)2 was rapidly made to oxidize by H2O2 to prepare $\delta$-FeOOH. The particle size, surface and morphology of $\delta$-FeOOH, and the shape and structure of thermally decomposed $\delta$-FeOOH were investigated by the use of high resolution STEM. $\delta$-FeOOH prepared under the condition of reaction temperature of Fe(OH)2 at 4$0^{\circ}C$, [OH-][Fe2+]=5 and aging time of 2 hr Fe(OH)2, had 630$\AA$ mean particle size, 4~5 aspect ratio, 20.8 emu/g saturation magnetization and 210 Oe coercivity. The edges of $\delta$-FeOOH were inclined to (001) about 41$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ and coincident with (102), (101) respectively. When $\delta$-FeOOH was thermally decomposed at 25$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in vacuo, which had micropores of 0.9 nm thickness and crystallites of 2.4 nm thickness. (001)hex, [10]hex. of $\delta$-FeOOH parallel with (001)hex, [100]hex. of $\alpha$-Fe2O3 respectively. This showed three dimensional topotaxial structure transition, which was investigated by SADP (Selected Area Diffraction Pattern) of STEM.

A Proteomic Screen for Presynaptic Terminal N-type Calcium Channel (CaV2.2) Binding Partners

  • N type calcium channels (CaV2.2) play a key role in the gating of transmitter release at presynaptic nerve terminals. These channels are generally regarded as parts of a multimolecular complex that can modulate their open probability and ensure their location near the vesicle docking and fusion sites. However, the proteins that comprise this component remain poorly characterized. We have carried out the first open screen of presynaptic CaV2.2 complex members by an antibody-mediated capture of the channel from purified rat brain synaptosome lysate followed by mass spectroscopy. 589 unique peptides resulted in a high confidence match of 104 total proteins and 40 synaptosome proteome proteins. This screen identified several known CaV2.2 interacting proteins including syntaxin 1, VAMP, protein phosphatase 2A, $G_{o\alpha}$, G$\beta$ and spectrin and also a number of novel proteins, including clathrin, adaptin, dynamin, dynein, NSF and actin. The unexpected proteins were classified within a number of functional classes that include exocytosis, endocytosis, cytoplasmic matrix, modulators, chaperones, and cell-signaling molecules and this list was contrasted to previous reports that catalogue the synaptosome proteome. The failure to detect any postsynaptic density proteins suggests that the channel itself does not exhibit stable trans-synaptic attachments. Our results suggest that the channel is anchored to a cytoplasmic matrix related to the previously described particle web.

$Si_3N_4/SiC$ 초미립복합체의 미세조직에 미치는 SiC 입자크기의 영향 (Effect of SiC Particle Size on Microstructure of $Si_3N_4/SiC$ Nanocomposites)

  • Si3N4/SiC nanocomposite ceramics containing 5 wt%dispersed SiC particles were prepared by gas-pressure-sintering at 200$0^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere. SiC particles with average sizes of 0.2 and 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used, and the effect of the SiC particle size on the microstructure was investigated. The addition of SiC particles effectively suppressed the growth of the Si3N4 matrix grains. The effect of grain growth inhibition was higher in the nanocomposites dispersed with fine SiC. SiC particles were dispersed uniformly inside Si3N4 matrix grains and on grain boundaries. When the fine SiC particles were added, large fraction of the SiC particles was trapped inside the grains. On the other hand, when the large SiC particles were added, most of the SiC particles were located on grain boundaries. Typically, the fraction of SiC particles located at grain boundaries was higher in the specimen prepared from $\beta$-Si3N4 than in the specimen prepared from $\alpha$-Si3N4.

분무열분해법에 의한 MgO 첨가 $Al_2O_3$ 분체합성 및 소결성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Preparation and Sinterability of MgO-Doped $Al_2O_3$ Powders by SprayPyrolysis Method)

  • Al2O3 and 0.25wt% MgO-doped Al2O3 powders were made from the alcohol solution of Al(NO3)3.9H2O and Mg(NO3)2.6H2O by spray pyrolysis method. Each powder was prepared at 900 and 100$0^{\circ}C$. Powders prepared at 90$0^{\circ}C$ were amorphous phase, but prepared at 100$0^{\circ}C$ wre mainly ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 crystalline form. Particle size of the MgO-doped Al2O3 powders was in the range of 0.2-2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, but undooped powders shwoed comparatively wider range of particle size. All the powders prepared at 900 and 100$0^{\circ}C$ were transformed to $\alpha$-Al2O3 crystalline form by calcination at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. Each powder was sintered at 1600, 1650 and 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. MgO-doped Al2O3 body sintering at 1$650^{\circ}C$ showed 99% of relative density but undooped Al2O3 showed 95% of relative density, even sintered at higher temperature of 1$700^{\circ}C$.

음이온/비이온 혼합 계면활성제 용액에서의 고형오구의 세척성 (Detergency of Particulate Soil in Anion/Nonionic Surfactant Mixed Solution)

  • This study was designed to investigate the influence of ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture on detergency of particulate soil under various solutions. The detergency of the particulate soil was determined by adhesion of particle to fabric and its removal from fabric separately. The PET fabric and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$were used as materials of textile and model of particulate soil, respectively. The detergency was investigated as a function of surfactants concentration, ionic strength, kinds of electrolyte and mole numbers of oxyethylene ether of nonionic surfactant in different ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture. Although some deviations exist, the adhesion of particle to fabric generally increased with decreasing its removal from fabric. The detergency of particulate soil on PET fabric was relatively higher in anionic/nonionic surfactant mixed solution than in each single surfactant solution, but the influence of ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture on detergency of particulate soil was low. Generally the detergency of particulate soil on fabric was at its maximum at 0.1% surfactant concentration, $1{\times}10^{-3}$ ionic strength, $Na_5P_3O_{10}$ electrolytes and 10 mole numbers of oxyethylene ether of nonionic surfactant, regardless of ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture.

Effects of α-particle beam irradiation on superconducting properties of thin film MgB2 superconductors

  • Superconducting properties of thin film MgB2 superconductors irradiated with 45 MeV ${\alpha}$-particle beam were studied. After the irradiation, enhancement of the critical current density and pinning force was observed, scaling close to strong pinning formula. Double logarithmic plots of the maximum pinning force density with irreversible magnetic field show a power law behavior close to carbon-doped MgB2 film or polycrystals. Variation of normalized pinning force density in the reduced magnetic field suggests scaling formulas for strong pinning mechanism like planar defects. We also observed a rapid decay of critical current density as the vortex lattice constant decreases, due to the strong interaction between vortices and increasing magnetic field.

  • The effect of pH variation in starting solution on the characteristics of hydroxyapatite precipitates and powder prepared by the wet method was investigated. Hydroxyapatite precipitates was agglomerated, the average agglomerated particle size was decreased in the range from 2 to 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with increasing pH values in starting solution. The aspect ratio of rod-shaped hydroxyapatite particle was rapidly increased at pH 11 and 11.5. The maximum specific surface area, 91.1$m^2$/g, was at pH 10.5. Dried powder prepared at high pH values contained more minutes CO2 than that prepared at low pH values. The poor crystallinity was maintained up to $600^{\circ}C$ regardless of the pH values in starting solutions. However, the second phase or high crsytalline hydroxypatite phase appeared above 80$0^{\circ}C$. In pH 9.5 and pH 10, $\beta$-whitlockite transformed to $\alpha$-whitlockite at 120$0^{\circ}C$, while in pH 10.5-11.5, hydroxyapatite phase was maintained up to 120$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Effect of Ca/P mole ratio on the precipitates and powder properties of hydroxyapatite was investigated. Powder and precipitates of hydroxyapatite were synthesized by the reaction of Ca(NO3)2.4H2O and (NH4)2 HPO4 solutions at room temperature. The pH value and compositions (Ca/P mole ratio) in starting solutions were 11 and 1.64-1.79(or 1.85), respectively. Rodlike hydroxyapatite precipitates were agglomerated together. The average agglomerated particle size was ranged from 2-8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Among compositions, the minimum agglomerated particle size was shown at the Ca/P mole ratio 1.75. CO2 was contained in hydroxyapatite powders and these ultrafine powders had poor crystallinity. The specific surface area and specific total pore volume of hydroxyapatite powders were 104-137$m^2$/g and 0.396-0.467cc/g, respectively. When the Ca/P mole ratio was 1.75, these values were the maximum. And water content increased with the Ca/P mole ratio(Ca/P mole ratio>1.67). In most cases, hydroxyapaite was stable to 130$0^{\circ}C$. However, in the case of Ca/P mole ratio 1.64, hydroxyapatite was changed to $\alpha$-whitlockite at 120$0^{\circ}C$.

Coercivity of Near Single Domain Size Nd2Fe14B-type Particles

  • The coercivity of near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles prepared by ball milling of HDDR-treated $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ alloy was investigated. The feasibility of a surface nitrogenation for improving the coercivity stability of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles was also studied. The near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles had a high coercivity of over 9 kOe. However, the coercivity radically deteriorated as the temperature increased in air (< 2 kOe at $200^{\circ}C$). This coercivity reduction was attributed to the soft magnetic phases, ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$, which formed on the surface of the fine particle due to oxidation. Surface nitrogenation of the fine particles significantly improved the stability of their coercivity. The improvement in coercivity stability was attributed to the formation of a thin nitrogenated layer on the surface of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles, which enhanced the anisotropy field and gave improved resistance to oxidation (dissociation).
