  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of irradiation dose on irradiated dried fruits. Dried banana, pineapple and pistachio were irradiated with doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 kGy at room temperature using a Co-60 irradiator. Multiplet ESR signals were observed in irradiated dried banana and pineapple, and singlet ESR signal was observed in irradiated pistachio, while these characteristic signals were not detected in non-irradiated samples. Since the amount of free radicals linearly increased with the applied doses $(0.5{\sim}5\;kGy)$, highly positive correlation coefficients $(R^2=0.9874{\sim}0.9974)$ were obtained between the irradiation doses and the corresponding free radical concentrations. The characteristic ESR signals were observed in irradiated samples even after 40 days of storage at room temperature.

  • For the purpose of disinfection and efficient storage, Korean Paldal variety rice was hulled into the unpolished and polished ones and packed in the kraft paper bags, irradiated with relatively high doses, 500, 800, and 1,000 krad from the $CO^{60}$ source and stored at room temperature, a variety of changes were observed as follows. 1) With 1,000 krad irradiation, mold was almost sterilized. 2) Fat acidity increased during storage and continued to increase more with increased doses. 3) The content of riboflavin eras severely reduced with higher doses. 4) The results of organoleptic test were featured by a yellow color and a keen irradiation odor appearing in the boiled rice. 5) In the irradiated rice starch with 3,000 krad, hydrolysis with ${\alpha}$-amylase was not effective while accelerated with diastase.

  • This research was attempted in order to develop a long-term storage method for sprouting foods such as potatoes, onions, garlic and chestnuts using Co-60 gamma irradiation combined with a natural low temperature. The sprouting of the irradiated groups, 150 Gy in potatoes, 50 Gy in onions and garlic, and 250 Gy in chestnuts was almost completely inhibited until 8 to 10 months of storage. The rotting rate of loss of weight influenced a little by irradiation with a sprout inhibiting dose, and the weight of loss of the optimum dose irradiated groups was reduced by about 6 to 24% as against that of the nonirradiated in the four stored foods. The chemical components relating to the quality of sprouting foods were better retained in the irradiated groups than in the nonirradiated until the latter period of storage. Therefore, it was shown that the long term storage of sprouting foods is possible using gamma irradiation of 50 to 150 Gy for potatoes, onions, and garlic and 250Gy for chestnuts followed by storage at a natural low temperature($10{\pm}5^{\circ}C$, R.H. 75-85%).

  • Study was carried out with electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to identify irradiated Korean medicinal herbs. Pueraria thunbergiana Benth., Angelica gigas Nakai, Agaricus blazei Murill and Astragalus membranaceus Bunge were irradiated with doses of 0, 1, 5 and 10 kGy at room temperature using a Co-60 irradiator. The irradiated Korean medicinal herbs exhibited an asymmetric absorption, which was different from the non-irradiated ones. The strength of ESR signals linearly increased by dose-dependent manner (1~10 kGy) and highly positive correlation coefficients ($R^2$=0.9428~0.9942) were obtained between the irradiation doses and the corresponding ESR signal intensities. Detection of the irradiated Korean medicinal herbs was possible even after 6 weeks of storage although the signal intensities of the irradiated samples decreased until 2 weeks at room temperature.

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the effects of irradiation doses and storage times on three spices. Three imported spices (Brassica juncea, Origanum vulgare, Laurus nobilis) were irradiated with doss of 0, 1, 5 and 10 kGy using a Co-60 irradiator at room temperature. ESR signals were measured from each sample by a Bruker-EPR spectrometer. The gamma-irradiated Brassica and Laurus nobilis exhibited characteristic signals, which were different from those of the non-irradiated ones. Non-irradiated and irradiated Origanum vulgare exhibited single lines, with higher ESR signals in irradiated sample than in non-irradiated sample. The ESR signals increased linearly with increasing irradiation doses $(1{\sim}10kGy)$. A strong positive correlation coefficient $(R^2=0.9939{\sim}0.9993)$ was obtained between the irradiation doses and the corresponding ESR signal intensities. Although the ESR signal intensities decreased with storage time, signals from the three irradiated spices were observed even after 12 weeks of storage at room temperature.

  • Dried cabbage, spinach, carrot, mugwort and yam were irradiated at 1, 5 and 10 kGy using a $^{60}Co$ irradiator at room temperature. Effects of irradiation dose and storage time on irradiated dried vegetables were investigated through electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Strong positive correlation coefficients ($R^{2}=0.9698-0.9915$) were obtained between irradiation dose and corresponding ESR signal intensity. ESR signal of mugwort was most stable at 9 weeks storage, followed by carrot, yam, and spinach, whereas that ESR signal of cabbage was not distinguishable.

  • We studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) by irradiation time of UV Krypton fluoride (KrF) excimer laser among grating processing parameters. The FBGs were fabricated in a different UV laser irradiation time at 30, 60, 90, and 120 seconds using the same commercial Ge-doped silica core fiber (SMF-28e). It was exposed to gamma-radiation up to a high dose of 34.3 kGy at the dose rate of 106 Gy/min, and then it was analyzed radiation effects by measuring the radiation-induced change in the temperature sensitivity coefficient and Bragg wavelength shift. According to the experimental results, We confirmed that the UV laser irradiation period for grating inscription has a highly effect on the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs. The radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift by the change of laser irradiation conditions showed a difference more than about 50 %.

  • A radiophotoluminescent glass rod detector (GRD) system has recently become commercially available. We investigate the dosimetric properties of the GRD regarding the reproducibility of signal, dose linearity and energy dependence. The reproducibility of five measurements for 50 GRDs is presented by an average of one standard deviation of each GRD and it is ${\pm}1.2%$. It is found to be linear in response to doses of $^{60}Co$ beam in the range 0.5 to 50 Gy with a coefficient of linearity of 0.9998. The energy dependence of the GRD is determined by comparing the dose obtained using cylindrical chamber to that by using the GRD. The GRD response for each beam is normalized to the response for a $^{60}Co$ beam. The responses for 6 and 15 MV x-ray beams are within ${\pm}1.5%$ (1SD). The energy response of GRD for high-energy photon is almost the same as the energy dependence of LiF:Mg:Ti (TLD-100)and shows little energy dependence unlike p-type silicon diode detector. The GRDs have advantages over other detectors such diode detector, and TLD: linearity, reproducibility and energy dependency. It has been verified to be an effective device for small field dosimetry for stereotactic radiosurgery.

  • The Alcyon Co-60 gamma rays was studied for electron contamination. The surface dose, attributable almost entirely to contamination electrons, has a linear dependence on field width for square fields and an inverse square dependence on distance from the bottom of the fixed head assembly Build-up and surface dose measurements were taken with and without an acrylic blocking tray in place. Further measurements were made with a copper filter designed to reduce secondary electrons emitted by photon interactions with the acrylic tray. The results are discussed in relation to skin sparing effect for radiation therapy Patients. And to achieve the maximum skin sparing effect, the selection of the optimum SSD and TSD is needed.
