  • Although Fe-Si based alloy has lower figure of merit than Si-Ge alloy applied for space probe, its low cost related to abundant raw material, rather simple processing, high temperature resistance and reliability up to $800^{\circ}C$ made it one of the most promising middle temperature thermoelectric generation materials. The effect of particle size and additive on the thermoelectric properties of p-$FeSi_2$ prepared by a RF inductive furnace was investigated. The electrical conductivity increased slightly with decreasing particle size and hence better grain-to-grain connectivity due to the increase of density. The Seebeck coefficient exhibited the maximum value at about 600~800K and decreased slightly with increasing particle size. This must be due to the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi. $Fe_2O_3$ and/or $Fe_3O_4$-doped specimens showed the higher electrical conductivity and the lower Seebeck coefficient due to increase of the metallic phase and Si-vacancy. On the other hand, $SiO_2$-doped specimen showed the higher electrical conductivity and the higher Seebeck coefficients.

  • P-type $\beta$-FeSi$_2$ with a nominal composition of $Fe_{0.92}Mn_{0.08}Si_2$ powders has been produced by mechanical alloying process. As-milled powders were spray dried and consolidated by atmospheric plasma thermal spraying as a rapid sintering process. As-milled powders were of metastable state and fully transformed to $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ phase by subsequent isothermal annealing. However, as-thermal sprayed $Fe_{0.92}Mn_{0.08}Si_2$ consisted of untransformed mixture of $\alpha$-$Fe_2Si_{5}$ and $\varepsilon$-FeSi phases. Isothermal annealing has been carried out to induce transformation to the thermoelectric semiconducting $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ phase. Isothermal annealing at $845^{\circ}C$ in vacuum gradually led to the thermoelectric semiconducting $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ phase transformation, but some residual metallic $\alpha$ and $\varepsilon$ phases were unavoidable even after prolonged annealing. Thermoelectric properties of $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ materials before and after isothermal annealing were evaluated. Seebeck coefficient increased and electric conductivity decreased with increasing annealing time due to the phase transition from metallic phases to semiconducting phases. Thermoelectric properties showed gradual increment, but overall properties appeared to be inferior to those of vacuum hot pressed specimens.

  • The effect of particle size and compaction pressure on the thermoelectric properties of n-type $FeSi_2$ was investigated. The starting powders with various particle size were pressed into a compact (compaction pressure; $70{\sim}220kg/cm^2$). The compact specimens were sintered at 1473 K for 7 h and annealed at 1103 K for 100 h under Ar atmosphere to transform to the semiconducting ${\beta}$-phase. The microstructure and phases of the specimens were observed by SEM, XRD and EDS. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured simultaneously for the same specimen at r.t.~1023 K in Ar atmosphere. The electrical conductivity increased with decreasing particle size and hence the increases of relative density of the sintered body and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi due to a increase of the electrical conductivity. The Seebeck coefficient exhibited the maximum value at about 700~800 K and decreased with decreasing particle size. This must be due to a increase of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi. On the other hand, the change of compaction pressure appeared to have little effect on the thermoelectric properties. Consequently, the power factor would be affected more by particle size than compaction pressure.

  • The effect of Mn additive on the thermoelectric properties of Fe-Si alloys prepared by a RF inductive furnace was investigated. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured as a function of temperature under Ar atmosphere to evaluate their applicability to thermoelectric energy conversion. The electrical conductivity of the specimens increased with increasing temperatures showing typical semiconducting behavior. The electrical conductivity of Mn-doped specimens are higher than that of undoped specimens and increased slightly with increasing the amount of Mn additive. This must be due to the difference in carrier concentration and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi(The ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi was detected in spite of 100 h annealing treatment at $830^{\circ}C$). And metallic conduction increased slightly with increasing the amount of Mn additive. On the other hand, Mn-doped specimens showed the lower Seebeck coefficient due to metallic phase. The power factor of Mn-doped specimens are higher than that of undoped specimens and would be affected by the electrical conductivity more than Seebeck coefficient.

  • The effect of Co additive on the electrical properties of Fe-Si alloys prepared by a RF inductive furnace was investigated. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured as a function of the temperature under an Ar atmosphere to evaluate their applicability to thermoelectric energy conversion. The electrical conductivity of the specimens increased as the temperature increased, showing typical semiconducting behavior. The electrical conductivity of Co-doped specimens was higher than that of undoped specimens and increased slightly as the amount of Co additive increased. This is most likely due to the difference in the carrier concentration and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi (The ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi was detected in spite of an annealing treatment of 100 h at $830^{\circ}C$). Additionally, metallic conduction increased slightly as the amount of Co additive increased. On the other hand, Co-doped specimens showed a lower Seebeck coefficient due to the metallic phase. The power factor of Co-doped specimens was higher than that of undoped specimens. This would be affected more by the electrical conductivity compared to the Seebeck coefficient.

  • This study investigates the effect of fatigue stress on the damping capacity in a damaged Fe-22Mn-12Cr-3Ni-2Si-4Co damping alloy under fatigue stress. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ forms by fatigue stress in the damaged Fe-22Mn-12Cr-3Ni-2Si4-Co damping alloy under fatigue stress. The ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ forms with the specific direction and surface relief, or they cross each other. With an increasing fatigue stress, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increases. With an increasing fatigue stress, the damping capacity increases with an increase in the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$. The increase in the damping capacity in the damaged Fe-22Mn-12Cr-3Ni-2Si-4Co alloy under fatigue stress strongly affects the increase of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ formed by fatigue stress, but the damping capacity of the damaged Fe-22Mn-12Cr-3Ni-2Si-4Co damping alloy under fatigue stress is strongly controlled by a large amount of ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$.

  • The microstructural evolution during mechanical alloying of elemental Fe and Si powders, average composition $Fe_{30}Si_{70}$ and $Fe_{50}Si_{50}$, has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Mechanical alloying was performed by using a SPEX 8000 Mixer/Mill under argon atmosphere with/without hexane as a process control agent (PCA). In the presence of PCA, the milling process was dominated by fracture resulting in the decrease in particle size to about $1{\mu}m$. The structural development with milling time depended on the average composition of starting powders. The mixture of $Fe_{50}Si_{50}$ and $Fe_{30}Si_{70}$ resulted in the formation of FeSi(${\varepsilon}$ - phase) and $FeSi_2$(${\beta}$ - phase), respectively. In the case of $Fe_{33.3}Si_{66.7}$, a mixture and $FeSi_2({\beta})$ was formed. These results were discussed by considering the thermodynamics and kinetics concerning the milling process.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of thermo-mechanical treatment on the tensile properties of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were formed, and grain size was refined by thermo-mechanical treatment. With the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment, volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were increased, and grain size decreased. In 5-cycle number thermo-mechanical treated specimens, more than 10% of the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite and less than 3% of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite were attained. Tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased with the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. Tensile properties of thermo-mechanical treated alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation was affected to formation of martensite by thermo-mechanical treatment, but was large affected to increasing of dislocation and grain refining.

  • Thermoelectric conversion properties of commercial Fe-Si2 and Fe-Si alloy ingots prepared by RF inductive furnace were investigated. As sintering temperature increased, density of the specimen increased and the phase transformation from metallic phases ($\varepsilon$-FeSi, ${\alpha}$-Fe2Si5) to semiconducting phase (${\beta}$-FeSi2) occurred more effectively. The FeSi phase was detected even after 100hrs of annealing treatment. For the Fesi1.95∼FeSi2.05 specimens prepared by RF inductive furnace, the thermoelectric property improved as the composition of the specimen approached to stoichiometric composition FeSi2. Electrical conductivity of the specimen increased with increasing temperatures showing typical semiconducting behavior. From the electrical conductivity measurements, activation energy in the intrinsic region (above about 700 K) was calculated to be approximately 0.46 eV. In spite of non-doping, the Seebeck coefficient for every specimen exhibited p-type conduction due to Si deficiency. Its maximum value was located at about 475 K, and then decreased abruptly with increasing temperatures. The power factor was governed by the Seebeck coefficient of the specimen more significantly than by electrical conductivity.
