The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anticancer and radio-sensitizing efficacy of a Withania somnifera extract/Gadolinium III oxide nanocomposite (WSGNC) in mice. WSGNC was injected to solid Ehrlich carcinoma-bearing mice via i.p. (227 mg/kg body weight) 3 times/week during 3 weeks. Irradiation was performed by whole body fractionated exposure to 6Gy, applied in 3 doses of 2 Gy/week over 3 weeks. Biochemical analyses as well as DNA fragmentation were performed. Treatment of solid Ehrlich carcinoma bearing mice with WSGNC combined with ${\gamma}$-radiation led to a significant decrease in the tumor size and weight associated with a significant decrease in mitochondrial enzyme activities, GSH content and SOD activity as well as a significant increase in caspase-3 activity, MDA concentration and DNA fragmentation in cancer tissues. Combined treatment of WSGNC and low dose of ${\gamma}$-radiation showed great amelioration in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status (GSH content and SOD activity) in liver tissues in animals bearing tumors. It is concluded that WSGNC can be considered as a radio-sensitizer and anticancer modulator, suggesting a possible role in reducing the radiation exposure dose during radiotherapy.

An experimental comparison of the detection properties between imaging plate and film for recording the electron diffraction pattern was carried out on a radiation-sensitive material, an aluminum trihydroxide(gibbsite, ${\gamma}-Al(OH)_3$), through the electron beam irradiation. Because the imaging plate has a wide dynamic range sufficient for recording extremely low- and high-electron intensities, the range of spatial frequency for the diffraction pattern acquired by the imaging plate was extended to two times larger than the range by the film, especially at a low electron dose condition(${\leq}0.1\;e^-/{\mu}m^2$). It is also demonstrated that the imaging plate showed better resolving power for discriminating fine intensity levels even in saturated transmitted beam. Hence, in the respect of investigating the structures of radiation-sensitive materials and cryo-biological specimens, our experimental demonstrations suggest that the imaging plate technique may be a good choice for those studies, which have to use an extremely low electron intensity for recording.
The alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay, called the comet assay, has been applied to detect DNA damage induced by a number of chemicals and biological factors in vivo and in vitro. The DNA damage was analysed by tail moment (TM) and tail length (TL), which were markers of DNA strand breaks in SCGE. Human, mouse and rat peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) were irradiated with different doses of $^{60}Co$${\gamma}$-rays, e.g. 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gy at a dose rate of 1 Gy/min. A dose-dependent increase in TM (p<0.01) and TL (p<0.01) was obtained at all the radiation doses (1-8 Gy) in human, mouse and rat PBLs. Mouse PBLs were more sensitive than human PBLs which were in turn more sensitive than rat PBLs when the treated dosages were 1 and 2 Gy. However, human PBLs were more sensitive than mouse PBLs which were in turn more sensitive than rat PBLs when the irradiation dosages were 4 and 8 Gy. Data from all three species could be fitted to a linear-quadratic model. These results indicated that there may be inherent differences in the radio-sensitivity among PBLs of mammalian species.
Resistant cell lines to azetidine-2-carboxylic acid (AZCA) were selected through rice embryo culture after mutagenic treatment of callus irradiated with 30,50,70,90 and 120 Gy. The optimum AZCA concentration for the selection of resistant cell lines was 3 or 4 mM AZCA considering $LD_{50}$ and the fresh weight of callus. Survival rate of the AZCA resistant callus showed remarkable increase in the callus irradiated with 50 and 70 Gy. Regeneration rate of the AZCA resistant callus was much lower on the whole. Ninety and 120 Gy increased the regeneration rate for calli selected from 3 and 4 mM AZCA, respectively. Based on fresh weight, survival rate and regeneration for selection of the AZCA resistant cell line, 50-90 Gy was considered as the optimum range of gamma irradiation. Irradiated calli selected from AZCA were more tolerant to NaCl than those from non-irradiated calli. It suggests that elevated resistance to osmotic stress resulted from mutagenic treatment. The level of free proline content in the AZCA resistant cell line was increased up to 3.5 times compared with that in the control. Proline content in the regenerant derived from the AZCA resistant cell line also increased to 1.7 times that from the control plants regenerated from callus grown in AZCA free medium. Selection of proline overproducing cell lines by in vitro mutagenesis was successful and seems to be useful for improvement of stress tolerance in this crop.
Irradiation of 20mg of natural $Dy(NO_3)_3$ in a neutron flux of $2{\times}10^{13}n/cm^2$ sec for 4 hours gave 5.76 Ci of $^{165}Dy$(specific activity, 610mCi/mg Dy) with high radionuclidic purity (>99.9 %). $^{165}Dy-MA$ was prepared in a quantitative yield by reacting the aqueous solution of $^{165}Dy(NO_3)_3$ with sodium borohydride solution in 0.2N NaOH. Coulter particle analyzer exhibited mean particle size of $2.6{\mu}m$ (range $1{\sim}6{\mu}m$), Even though the $^{165}Dy-MA$ suspension in saline was stored at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours or autoclaved at $121^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes, there was no significant change in particle size and leakage problem indicating the prepared $^{165}Dy-MA$ is sufficiently stable. In-vivo retention studies were carried out by administering $^{165}Dy-MA$ into the knee joint space of normal rabbits. Gamma camera analysis showed high retention in joint space of normal rabbits. Gamma camera analysis showed high retention in joint space even at 24 hours after administration (> 99.9%). The ease with which the $^{165}Dy-MA$ can be made in the narrow size range and their high invitro and vivo stability make them attractive agents for radiation synovectomy.
Acrylic acid was grafted onto the peroxidized cellulose which was stored at room temperature for 20 days after ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation in air. The effect of acids and metallic salts on the grafting yields was determined. The addition of both the acid and metallic salt was found to accelerate the grafting yield much more than the only metallic salt, and the addition of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ led to much higher grafting yield than that of $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$. The effect of acid on the grafting yield increased by the order $H_2>SO_4>HCl>HNO_3>CH_3COOH$. With the addition of $H_2SO_4$, the grafting yield rapidly increased up to $7{\times}10^{-2}$M, and then levelled off.
When a metal oxide field effect transistor (MOSFET) is exposed to ionizing radiation, electron/hole pairs are generated in its oxide layer. The slow moving holes of them are trapped in the oxide layer of p-MOSFET and appear as extra charges that change the characteristics of the transistor. The radiation-induced charges directly impact the threshold (turn-on) voltage of the transistor. This paper describes the use of the radiation-induced threshold voltage change as an accumulated radiation dose monitoring sensor. Two kinds of commercial p-type MOSFETS were tested in a Co-60 gamma irradiation facility to see their capabilities as a radiation dosimeter. We found that the transistors showed good linearity in their threshold voltage shift characteristics with radiation dose. The results demonstrate the potential use of commercial p-MOSFETS as inexpensive radiation sensors for the first time.
We exposed ICR mice to low-dose (0.2 Gy) and low-dose-rate (0.7 mGy/h) $\gamma$-radiation ($^{137}Cs$) in the Low-dose-rate Irradiation Facility at the Radiation Health Research Institute to evaluate systemic effects of low-dose radiation. We compared the body and organ weights, number of blood cells (white and red blood cells and platelets), levels of biochemical markers in serum, and frequency of micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes between low-dose irradiated and non-irradiated control mice. The ICR mice irradiated with total doses of 0.2 and 2 Gy showed no changes in body and organ weights, number of blood cells (white and red blood cells), or frequency of micronuclei in the polychromatic erythrocytes of peripheral blood. However, the number of platelets (P = 0.002) and the liver weight (P < 0.01) were significantly increased in mice exposed to 0.2 and 2 Gy, respectively. These results suggest that a low-dose-rate of 0.7 mGy/h does not induce systemic damage. This dose promotes hematopoiesis in the bone marrow microenvironment and the proliferation of liver cells. In the future, the molecular biological effects of lower doses and dose rates need to be evaluated.

By controlling both the means of grafting and the cast-solution components, no degradation and dimensional change of radiation-induced graft polymerization were found. The electric resistance of styrene-cellulose acetate grafts increases with increasing styrene content, while those for the hydrophilic monomers show no marked effect. In comparison with the grafted cellulose acetate membrane by simultaneous irradiation method, the appearance of the grafted membrane by post-polymerization method was not markedly changed irrespective of the percent of grafting and radiation dose of electron beam or ${\gamma}$-ray. The combination of crosslinking agents such as divinyl benzene (OB) or trimethyl propane triacrylate (TMPT) in the VP:St:BPO system leads to gradual increase of the percent of grafting. The activation energy for grafting of St:VP:BPO solution onto cellulose acetate membrane was determined to be about 21.8 Kcal/mole over the range of 55$^{\circ}$-8$0^{\circ}C$. The initial rate of grafting (in %/hr) is proportional to the power 0.76 for dose intensities.

The investigations were discussed on the radiation effects of the electrical properties to the p-type MOS capacitors, which were irradiated by cobalt-60 gamma ray sources. The characteristics of capacitance-bias voltage(C-V) and of dielectric dissipation tarter-bias voltage(D-V) on the capacitors were measured at 1 [MHz] frequency. The microscopic behaviors of spate charges in oxide and silicon-silicon dioxide(Si- $SiO_2$) interface were investigated from the experimental data. The C-V characteristics are statical and convenient for the evaluation of the steady state behavior of carriers and interface states characteristics. While, the distribution and magnitude of space charges in oxide can be found out accurately on the $V_{dp}$ in D-V curves. The density of interface states can be deduced with ease from the magnitude of D-peak at depletion state. Thus, it is also concluded that the D-V curves are more useful and easier than conventional C-V curves for analysis of the microscopic and dynamic behavior of carriers in oxide and Si- $SiO_2$interface.
