  • Fourier transform Raman spectra of methyl red adsorbed on untreated and pretreated ${\gamma}$-alumina and silicaalumina calcined at 900 $^{\circ}C$ under 1 atm steam flowing were recorded. Spectral analysis shows that the active species adsorbed on ${\gamma}$-alumina was to be deprotonated methyl red, and on silica-alumina to be di-protonated. This indicates that ${\gamma}$-alumina adapted in this work holds Bronsted basicity, and silica-alumina Bronsted acidity. Raman intensities of methyl red on pretreated ${\gamma}$-alumina are about three times stronger than on untreated ${\gamma}$-alumina, while spectral features are unchanged. For silica-alumina, spectral features show modified vibrational characteristics upon surface hydroxylations generated from pretreatment. Consequently, the acidity loss for silica-alumina and the basicity gain for ${\gamma}$-alumina were observed by increasing the surface hydroxyl groups on the catalysts through pretreatment of the steam calcination.

  • The surface of alumina is capable of acquiring a change when it is in an aqueous solution. This surface change will have a strong influence on the surrounding ions, particularly those of opposite change known as the counter ions. A site-binding model of the {{{{ gamma }}-alumina/KCl(aq) interface was used to calculated theoretical surface ionization constants and P.Z.C.(Point of zero change) of {{{{ gamma }}-alumina. This paper was carried out to investigate the effect of calcination temperature on the acidic and electrical properties of pure {{{{ gamma }}-alumina prepared by the precipitation method from the Al(NO3)3.9H2O and NH4OH. From the experimental data it was shown that {{{{ gamma }}-alumina have a mainly Br nsted acid site. However, the acidity of {{{{ gamma }}-alumina decreased with increasing calcination temperature at strength Ho +9.3. The surface charge density of {{{{ gamma }}-alumina was increased with electrolyte ionic strength and calcination temperature.

  • Due to the intrinsic low surface activation of ${\gamma}$-alumina it has been used limitely in practice. Accordingly forward enhancing its utility ${\gamma}$-alumina surface was treated with slfuricf aicd nitric acid and chloric acid respec-tively. Subsequently the effects of surface activity on the surface electrical characteristics were investigated. The ${\gamma}$-alumina was prepared by the precipitation of aluminium nitrate [Al(NO3)3.9H2O] using ammonia water as a precipitator and it was chemically treated with such acids mentioned above. The surface and morphology of the acid-treated ${\gamma}$-alumina were analysed by XRD, BET and the surface activities were measured by the amine titration methods. The interfacial properties of the ${\gamma}$-alumina dispersed in electrolyte solution were esti-mated by the surface charge density measured using potentiometric tiration. Based on the relation between surface charge density and the acid amount the following results were drawn for the surface and interfacial electrical properties ; Acidic properties of surface-treated alumina increase with anion load on alumina surface. P. Z. C decreases with acid amount on alumina surface. The surface charge densities were apart from electrolyte ionic strength. The acidity of ${\gamma}$-alumina is linearly dependent on the P. Z,.C when the ${\gamma}$-alumina was dispersed in aqueous electrolyte solution.

  • The phase transformation temperature from $\theta$- to $\alpha$-alumina was lowered from 1214$^{\circ}C$ to 114$0^{\circ}C$ in DSC by treating ${\gamma}$-alumina obtained by calcination of boehmite at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2hrswith $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds (d50=0.36${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and 3wt% of the alumina sol. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds seemed to lower to the transformation temperature and the alumina sol suppressed the high temperature agglormeration. The effect was increased as the amount of the sol was increased, which was supported by TEM and particle size distribution. For an example, spherical ${\gamma}$-alumina powder with d50=0.54${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was prepared by treating the ${\gamma}$-alumina with 9 wt% of the alumina sol and 3wt% of the $\alpha$-Al2O3. It sintered to 99% of the theoretical density at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. and it had relatively homogeneous microstructure with 2~3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sized grains.

  • Crystallographic phases of Plasma electrolytic oxidized Al alloy, A1050, were investigated. The electrolyte of PEO was $Na_2Si_2O_3$ and KOH. Unipolar pulse, $ 2000{\mu}sec$ with $400{\mu}sec+420V$ impulse, were applied for 2 min, 5 min, 15 min, and 30 min. ${\gamma}-Alumina$, as well as ${\alpha}-alumina$, was main crystal phase. ${\gamma}-Alumina$ was appeared in the beginning, then the amount of ${\alpha}-alumina$ was increased with time, but the amount of ${\gamma}-Alumina$ remained constant without any increasing. So, it is concluded that plasma gas produce ${\gamma}-Alumina$ at the first, and then ${\gamma}-Alumina$ transform ${\alpha}-alumina$ finally. During the transformation, high temperature of micro plasma gives transformation energy.

  • The surface of commercial alumina fibers used for reinforcing the MCFC matrix has been coated with ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 being the same material as the matrix, by the sol-gel method in order to enhance the corrosion resistivity of alumina fibers. Stable LiAlO2 complex polymeric sols for coating was synthesized by mixing aluminum alkoxide polymeric sols with LiNO3 solution. It was found that the LiAlO2 polymeric sol prepared by adding the mixed chelate of acethylacetone and triethanolamine (the mole ratio of AA/TEA = 0.125/0.75) to the 1 mole of the aluminum alkoxide had the excellent stability and coating behavior. The crystalline structure of the dried gel from the ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 sol was completely transformed into the ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 at $600^{\circ}C$. The optimum viscosity of the sol for coating the alumina long fibers was 30~40 cP, while it was 12~20 cP in case of the short fiber coating. The ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 coated alumina fibers without defects fully densified when heat-treated at 120$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Silica membranes were prepared on a porous ${\alpha}$-alumina tube with pore size of 150nm by sol-gel and chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method for hydrogen separation at high temperatures. Silica and ${\gamma}$-lumina membranes formed by the sol-gel method possessed a large amount of mesopores of a Knudsen diffusion regime. In order to improve the $H_2$ selectivity, silica was deposited in the sol-gel derived silica/${\gamma}$-alumina layer by thermal decomposition of tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) at $600^{\circ}C$. The CVD with forced cross flow through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging mesopores that were left unplugged in the membranes. The CVD modified silica/alumina composite membrane completely rejected nitrogen permeation and thus showed a high $H_2$ selectivity by molecular sieve effect. the permeation of hydrogen was explained by activated diffusion and the activation energy was 9.52kJ/mol.

  • The metal-support interaction was studied in 1∼5wt% copper supported on $\gamma-alumina$ and titania systems by temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and EPR. When the samples were treated with oxygen at $500^{\circ}C$, the relative area of H2-TPR peak at higher temperature increased with copper content for titania system whereas that of lower temperature increased for ${\gamma}$-alumina system. After oxygen treatment at $500^{\circ}C,\;{\gamma}$-alumina system showed a TPR peak at $300^{\circ}C$ while two peaks at 120 and $180^{\circ}C$ were found in titania system. A typical $Cu^{2+}$ EPR signal was observed on ${\gamma}$-alumina but very broad and small one on titania. From the results, it was suggested that the metal-support interaction increases in the order of silica < titania < ${\gamma}$-alumina and copper oxide has different loading characteristics depending on the supports.

  • NOx coming from combustion make photochemical smog and acid rain, cause chronic respiratory disease resulting in critical hazard to environment and human health. Most composition of NOx coming from combustion is NO and the remaining small amount of $NO_x$ is $NO_2$. Currently, many technologies are developed and used to control NO release. One of these technologies is control technology through use of the adsorbent. In this study, two methods were used to make the adsorbent and compared. KOH and ${\gamma}{\;}-alumina$ were mixed by using two methods. Then, the experimental conditions were as follows: the concentrations of KOH used were 1 mole, 0.5 mole, and 0.1 mole, respectively and the amount of ${\gamma}{\;}-alumina$$250^{\circ}C$. As a result, precipitation method, which is one of the production methods of the adsorbent, showed the most removal efficiency as KOH concentration as 1 mole and reaction temperature as $100^{\circ}C$ were used. This study shows 40 to 60% of micropores of ${\gamma}{\;}-alumina$ was lost by the reaction with KOH through the analysis of SEM and BET Finally, KOH is the most predominant factor to control the removal of NO rather than micropore of the adsorbent.
