This study investigated the microstructure and wear properties of extruded hyper-eutectic Al-Si (15wt.%) alloy in an engine oil environment. The wear mechanism of the material was also analyzed and compared to conventional gray cast iron. In microstructural observation results of Al-15wt.%Si alloy, primary Si phase ($45.3{\mu}m$) and eutectic Si phase ($3.1{\mu}m$) were found in the matrix, and the precipitations of $Mg_2Si({\beta}^{\prime})$, $Al_2Cu({\theta}^{\prime})$ and $Al_6(Mn,Fe)$ were also detected. In the case of gray cast iron, ferrite and pearlite were observed. It was also observed that flake graphite ($20-130{\mu}m$) were randomly distributed. Wear rates were lower in the Al-Si alloy as compared to those of gray cast iron in all load conditions, confirming the outstanding wear resistance of Al-15wt.%Si alloy in engine oil environment. In the $4kg_f$ condition, the wear rate of gray cast iron was $6.0{\times}10^{-5}$ and that of Al-Si measured $0.8{\times}10^{-5}$. The microstructures after wear of the two materials were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The primary Si and eutectic Si of Al-Si alloy effectively mitigated the abrasive wear, and the Al matrix effectively endured to accept a significant amount of plastic deformation caused by wear.
${\beta}$-SiC powders were prepared by the simultaneous reduction and carbiding of Jecheon quartzite at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours in hydrogen atmosphere, using graphite or carbon black as the reducing and carbiding reagent. The prepared SiC powder was acid-treated with the mixture of fluoric acid and hydrochloric acid at room temperature and also by heating on an alcohol lamp for one hour, respectively. The impurities were mostly eliminated and the purity of SiC became 98.5% after hot acid treatment. The specific surface area of SiC powder was also increased up to 115㎡/g by hot acid treatment. This pure and fine SiC powder was hot-pressed at 1900$^{\circ}C$ for 30min, using 5wt% Al2O3 as a sintering aid. The density, M.O.R., KIC and hardness of the hot-pressed SiC ceramics were 3.195g/㎤, 48.7Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$, 5.4MN/㎥/2 and 2,182Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$, respectively.
β'-Sialon with different compositions was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of compacts containing kaolin graphite and silicon or aluminum at temperature of 1300-1450℃ under flowing gas of 90% N2-10% H2 or 20hrs. Quantitative analysis of minerals which were formed in the specimens was carried out by using the calibration curve which has been prepared from X-ray diffraction patterns. The obtained results were as follows : 1. In the formation of β'-Sialon by carbothermal reduction-nutridation of Si-Al-O-C system mixtures at 1400℃ for 20hrs. (2) β'-Sialon as a major mineral and α-Al2O3 as a minor mineral were identified in the specimen which was prepared of kaolin and graphite. (3)α-Al2O3 and 15R as a minor minerals were measured in the specimen which was prepared of kaolin aluminum and graphite. (4) AlN instead of α-Al2O3 and 15R was formed in the compacts that excess graphite(=35 wt%) was added to the mixture of kaolin and aluminium. 2. As the reaction time and temperature were increased the formation of β'-Sialon was increased whereas the phases of mllite SiC and Si2ON2 were decreased gradually.
An acetaldehyde, a representative food waste odor, was decomposed using a hybrid system comprised of a non-thermal plasma and catalyst at an ambient temperature under high humidity. A five wt.% Mn was impregnated on two differently structured microporous zeolites, namely Beta and ZSM-5, with a different molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Under high humidity conditions, the acetaldehyde degradation was higher in zeolites with the high ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Among studied catalysts, a five wt.% Mn/Beta (SiO2/Al2O3 = 300) showed the highest acetaldehyde removal activity owing to its high hydrophobicity and reducibility. During long term stability test using the same catalyst for 110 hours, the acetaldehyde removal activity was relatively well-maintained.
The solidification sequence and formation of intermetallic phase of Fe-rich Al-Si-Cu alloy were investigated by using real-time imaging of synchrotron X-ray radiation. Effects of cooling rate during uni-directional solidification on the resultant solidification behavior was also studied in a specially constructed vacuum chamber in the SPring-8 facility. The series of radiographic images were complementarily analyzed with conventional analysis of OM and SEM/EDX for phase identification. Detailed solidification sequence and formation mechanisms of various phases were discussed based on real-time image analysis. The growth rates of $\alpha$-AlFeMnSi and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ were measured in order to understand the growth behavior of each phase. It is suggested that real-time imaging technique can be a powerful tool for the precise understanding of solidification behavior of various industrial materials.

The effect of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives on fracture toughness of ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$ composites by hot-pressed sintering were investigated, The ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$ ceramic composites were hot-presse sintered and annealed by adding 4, 8, 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at low temperature($1800^{\circ}C$) for 4h. In this microstructures, the relative density is over 97% of the theoretical density and the porosity increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents because of the increasing tendency of pore formation. But the fracture toughness showed the highest of $7.0MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest of $1.59\times10^{-3}\Omega{\cdot}cm$ for composite added with 8wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature and is all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR} against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.
The effect of the oxygen content and the annealing temperature on the tensile behavior of the Ti-1.5Al-3Fe-0.25Si-(0.1~0.5)O alloy was investigated. The tensile properties were dependent on the volume fraction of the microstructure constituents, i.e. the equixed ${\alpha}$, equixed ${\beta}$ and lamellar ${\alpha}$. The results showed that the O-partitioned equixed ${\alpha}$ had a much higher strength compared to the equixed ${\beta}$. The strength of the lamellar ${\alpha}$ increased with increasing the annealing temperature because the O content of the lamellar ${\alpha}$ increased. Ti-1.5Al-3Fe-0.25Si-0.3O alloy annealed to $900^{\circ}C$ where the volume fraction of lamellar ${\alpha}$ was the highest exhibited an excellent combination of the strength (1198.5 MPa) and ductility (27.5%). The effect of the lamellar ${\alpha}$ on the ductility was discussed.

In order to clarify the wear resistance as cutting tools, the effect of oxygen addition on oxidation behavior of the ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics with 5 mass% $Y_2O_3$ and 2 or 4 mass% $Al_2O_3$ was investigated by performing oxidation tests in air at $1300^{\circ}$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ and cutting performance tests. From test results, we could conclude that the mechanical properties of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics depending on oxygen introduction are much effective on cutting performance improvements of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics.
Melt super-heating which promotes shape modification of ${\beta}$ intermetallic compounds was conducted to improve mechanical properties of recycled AC2B aluminum alloy. Modification of needle-shape ${\beta}$ intermetallic compounds was effective for the specimens of AC2B aluminum alloys containing 0.85wt.% Fe by melt super-heating, in which the melts had been held at $850^{\circ}C$ or $950^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes respectively. Owing to the modification of needle-shape of ${\beta}$ intermetallic compounds by melt superheating of the alloy with containing 0.85wt.% Fe to $950^{\circ}C$, increases in elongation and tensile strength were prominent to be more than double and 55% respectively in comparison with the melt heated to $740^{\circ}C$. Moreover, modification of needle-shape ${\beta}$ intermetallic compounds in the alloy containing O.85wt.% Fe by $950^{\circ}C$ melt super-heating led to 48% improvement of the value of impact absorbed energy as compared with the melt heated to $740^{\circ}C$.
Silicon carbide with sialon was prepared by hot pressing and transient liquid-phase sintering, and the effects of sintering atmosphere and starting phases on their microstructural characteristics were investigated. The sintered SiC with Sialon composition(Y2O3, AlN, Si3N4) in argon atmosphere had high sintered density and large aspect ratio. But sintered specimens in nitrogen atmosphere showed low aspect ratio and small grian size, becuase of the retardation of phase transformation and grain growth. Addition of Y-Sialon powder to SiC also retarded the phase transformation to ${\alpha}$-SiC from ${\beta}$-SiC and densification. The SiC specimen prepared from the starting ${\beta}$-SiC powder with Sialon composition(Y2O3, AlN, Si3N4) showed the highest fracture toughness about 6.0 MPa$.$m1/2.
