  • A novel synthetic route has been developed to prepare $\alpha$-cobalt hydroxide with intercalated nitrate anions. It was successfully synthesized by $\gamma$-ray irradiation under simple conditions, i.e., air atmosphere, without base. Under $\gamma$-ray irradiation, it leads to the formation of layered cobalt hydroxynitrate compounds which have small crystalline size and have the role of a generator of hydroxyl anion. Structural and morphological characterizations were performed by using power X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The component and thermal stability of the sample were respectively measured by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal analyses, including thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

  • HT-$LiCoO_2$ powders were synthesized from hydroxide precursors in this study. The cobalt hydroxide compounds with hydrotalcite-like(${\alpha}$-phase) and/or brucite-like(${\beta}$-phase) structures as a component of the precursor were prepared in various PH conditions using precipitation method. It was found that various phase and compositions of cobalt hydroxides could be tailor-prepared via a careful control of preparation parameters such as the concentration ratio of $[OH^-]/[CO^{2+}]$ and aging time. The hydroxides $Co(OH)_2$ and LiOH were mixed with aqueous methyl-alcohol. The precursor of a HT-$LiCoO_2$ was synthesized via subsequent processes including evaporation, drying and aging. The transformation of tailor-made ${\beta}$-phase $Co(OH)_2$ to CoOOH and formation of solid solution in the precursor were achieved during aging. These results cause HT-$LiCoO_2$ to be synthesized at low temperature($600^{\circ}C$ ) for a short time(10min).

  • A method was developed for the separation of titanium, niobium and zirconium together in a group from the coexisting ions of various metals such as iron, cobalt, nickel, yttrium and rare earths by means of the cation exchange column using ${\alpha}$-hydroxyisobutyric acid as the eluent. In the course of the present investigation, it was found that the tailing phenomena of zirconium were attributable to the hydroxide precipitation which was made prior to the elution. For example, if zirconium was precipitated by sodium hydroxide, the tailing of zirconium became very serious in contrast to the results reported by others. This paper describes how these tailing phenomena of zirconium were prevented and how a practical procedure for the separation of these ions was, achieved using ion-exchange method. Using the present method the nuclides of $^{90m}Y$ and $^{90}Y$ were separated with radiochemical purity from the irradiated zirconium.
