  • YSZ/LSM composite cathode was fabricated by dip-coating of YSZ sol on the internal pore surface of a LSM cathode followed by sintering at low temperature (800-100$0^{\circ}C$) The YSZ coating significantly increased the TPB(Triple Phase Boundary) where the gas the electrode and the electrolyte were in contact with each other. Sinter the formation of resistive materials such as La2Zr2O7 or SrZrO3 was prevented due to the low processing temperature and TPB was increased due to the YSZ film coating the electrode resistance (Rel) was reduced about 100 times compared to non-modified cathode. From the analysis of a.c impedance it was shown that microstructural change of the cathode caused by YSZ film coating affected the oxygen reduction reaction. In the case of non-modified cathode the RDS (rate determining step) was electrode reactions rather than mass transfer or the oxygen gas diffusion in the experimental conditions employed in this study ($600^{\circ}C$-100$0^{\circ}C$ and 0,01-1 atm of Po2) for the YSZ film coated cathode however the RDS involved the oxygen diffusion through micropores of YSZ film at high temperature of 950-100$0^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure of 0.01-0.03 atm.

  • This paper presents the application of the bond valence method to estimate the valence charge distribution in several perovskite systems: $La_{{\tilde{1}}x}Pb_xMnO_3$ (x=0.1-0.5), $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.{\tilde{4}}x}Ti_xMnO_3$ (x=0.0-0.25) and $La_{{\tilde{1}}x}Sr_xCoO_3$ (x=0.1-0.5); the reviewing of their crystal structures is also incorporated. The results showed the failure of the elastic bonding mechanism in all studied systems and revealed the general deficit of the valence charge in their unit cells. This valence deficit was not associated with the structural defects and was not equally localized in all coordination spheres. As the content of substitution increased, the charge deficit declined systematically from balanced level, signifying the transfer of valence charge from the ${\tilde{B}}O_6$ to ${\tilde{A}}O_{12}$ spheres. This transfer depended on the valence deviation of spheres and the average reached near 2 electron per unit cell. The possible impact of the limitted accuracy of the available structural data on the bond valence results has also been considered.

  • Tungsten carbon nitride (W-C-N) thin films were produced by reactive radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputter-ing of tungsten in $Ar-N_2$ gas mixture. The effects of the variation of nitrogen partial pressure on the composition, and structural properties of these films as well as the influence of post-deposition annealing have been studied. When $La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3$ was coated on the W-C-N/Si substrate, coercivity ($H_c$) and magnetization at room temperature shows 58.73 Oe, and 29.4 emu/cc, respectively. In order to improve the diffusion barrier characteristics, we have studied the impurity behaviors to control the ratios of nitrogen and carbon concentrations.

  • KIER has been developing the anode-supported flat tubular solid oxide fuel cell unit bundle for the intermediate temperature($700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$) operation. Anode-supported flat tubular cells have Ni/YSZ cermet anode support, 8 moi.% $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2(YSZ)$ thin electrolyte, and cathode multi-layer composed of Sr-doped $LaSrMnO_3(LSM)$, LSM-YSZ composite, and $LaSrCoFeO_3(LSCF)$. The prepared anode-supported flat tubular cell was joined with ferritic stainless steel cap by induction brazing process. Current collection for the cathode was achieved by winding Ag wire and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCo)$ paste, while current collection for the anode was achieved by using Ni wire and felt. For making stack, the prepared anode-supported flat tubular cells with effective electrode area of $90\;cm^2$ connected in series with 12 unit bundles, in which unit bundle consists of two cells connected in parallel. The performance of unit bundle in 3% humidified $H_2$ and air at $800^{\circ}C$ shows maximum power density of $0.39\;W/cm^2$ (@ 0.7V). Through these experiments, we obtained basic technology of the anode-supported flat tubular cell and established the proprietary concept of the anode-supported flat tubular cell unit bundle.

  • Significantly enhanced low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) and maximum dMR/dH {$(dMR/dH)_{max}$} values were successfully achieved from $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3$(LSMO)-manganese oxide composite samples prepared by liquid phase sintering, compared with those of the same composites prepared by solid state reaction. For this study, pure LSMO and LSMO-manganese oxide composites with various nominal compositions of (1-x)LSMO-$xMn_2O_3$ (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.8) were sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$, above the eutectic temperature of $1430^{\circ}C$, for 1 h in air. The highest LFMR value of 1.28% with the highest $(dMR/dH)_{max}$ value of 21.1% $kOe^{-1}$ was obtained from the composite sample with x = 0.3 at 290 K in 500 Oe. This enhancement of LFMR and $(dMR/dH)_{max}$ values is ascribed to efficient suppression of magnetic disorder at the LSMO grain boundary, by forming a characteristic LSMO-manganese eutectic structure.
