This study examined the optimum conditions and obtained the basic data for processing semi-dried sea cucumber flakes. During the boiling process, the weight and length of the sea cucumber decreased to 45.61% and 55.87%, respectively. Thereafter, there was a gradual decrease in the weight and length of the sea cucumber, which were finally maintained at 30.00% and 50.93%, respectively. The moisture content during drying was 38.37% after 3 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, and 36.56% after 5 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. However, the decrease in moisture content was slowly at 60 hours and $4^{\circ}C$, reaching a final value of 68.9%. The length of boiled sea cucumber during drying decreased to 66.35% after 11 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, and 68.90% after 24 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. The chromaticity and hardness tended to increase during the drying process. Moisture content and water activity of sea cucumber flakes decreased from 81.48% (0.963) to 33.50% (0.763), respectively, after 3 hours at $60^{\circ}C$. Following this, the moisture content and water activity continuously decreased to 30.75% (0.608) at 4 hours and 19.47% (0.437) at 5 hours, respectively. The overall acceptance score was 4.11 and 3.89 for 4 hours dry sample and 5 hours dry sample, respectively. However, the score was not statistically significant.
This study analyzes effects of the proposed reduction of legal working hours in Korea in which base wage is unchanged with working hours reduction. The theoretical analysis shows that a reduction of legal working hours would result in less than equal size reduction of actual working hours, and increase in wages. On the other hand, the effects on employment is ambiguous depending on the substitution effect and scale effect. An empirical analysis based on macro-economic model simulation supports the theoretical conjecture. It has been found that with the reduction of legal working hours, real wages and consumption increase while actual working hours decreases about half of the legal hours reduction. In addition, the immediate and outright imposition of legal hours reduction on all sectors of the economy is found to create a cost push inflation and reduce GDP, investment, and employment. This negative effects are lessened as the reduction of legal hours is gradually made and/or some measures to absorb the cost shock such as abolition of paid monthly leave are employed together.
Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between work-related communication devices use during work outside of regular working hours and depressive symptoms in wage workers. Methods: Data from 50,538 workers aged 15 years or older who had participated in the 6th Korean Working Condition Survey (KWCS) were used. The final sample was 32,994 wage workers. The questionnaire asked the respondents how often they used communication devices for work during work outside of regular working hours. Depressive symptoms were assessed using WHO-5 Well-Being Index. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between work-related communication devices use during work outside of regular working hours and depressive symptoms. Results: The rate of depressive symptoms was highest among workers who did not use work-related communication devices during work outside of regular working hours. After adjusting for socio-demographic and work-related factors, the odds ratio of depressive symptoms among workers who used communication devices when working outside of regular working hours was 1.20 (95% CI: 1.09-1.32); the odds ratio of depressive symptoms in the group not using communication devices for free-time work was 1.66 (95% CI: 1.37-2.00), which was higher than that of the reference group, that is, workers who did not work outside of regular working hours, and was statistically significant. Conclusion: Regardless of whether work-related communication devices are used, working outside of regular working hours increases depressive symptoms. The use of work-related communication devices during work outside of regular working hours can reduce the rate of depressive symptoms.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the tensile strength of resin-infiltrated demineralized dentin according to the demineralization time, and to evaluate the tensile strength of hybrid layer that is formed by infiltrating different priming adhesives or primer/adhesive into demineralizd dentin matrix. Seventy five hour-glass shaped dentin specimens were prepared in mid-coronal dentin from extracted human molars. Thirty specimens were distributed into three groups according to demineralization time - 2 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours. Each specimen was placed in primer/adhesive of All-Bond 2 for 5 hours of infiltration. Another forty-five specimens of them were demineralized in 37% phosphoric acid for 4 hours. They were randomly assigned to three experimental groups - AB, SB and OS - to designate All-Bond 2, Single Bond and One-Step. Each specimen was placed in one of three different adhesives for 5 hours of infiltration. The specimens were visible light-cured for 5 minutes, and then stored for 24 hours in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$. After that, microtensile bond strength for each specimen was measured, and the fractured surfaces were then observed by SEM. The data were statistically analysed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test and Bonferroni's multiple comparison test. The results were as follows; 1. Tensile strength of the group demineralized for 4 hours was significantly higher than that of groups demineralized for 2 hours and 8 hours (P < .01). 3. Tensile strength of the AB group was significantly higher than that of the SB group and OS group (P < .01).
This study tried to analyze the hours for computer science education in private elementary schools located in Seoul, in order to find out how many lesson hours are required. According to online discussion participation in the 2022 revised curriculum survey results, it was found that students and parents wanted computer science education to be strengthened. Information education in public elementary schools consists of a separate unit in the practical subject based on the 2015 revised curriculum and is to be implemented for more than 17 hours. As a result of surveying the average hours of computer science education based on school reminder of 28 private elementary schools in Seoul, it was found that about 152 hours of information education were being operated for 6 years. This is about 9 times the gap in education hours compared to public elementary schools. Artificial intelligence is emerging as important, so the lesson hours of information education must be secured to strengthen students' future competency in morden society. Therefore, informatics curriculum should be independent as a subject and secure the number of hours in the elementary school level.
Background: Rest breaks at work are reported to reduce fatigue and job stress. Apartment janitors in Korea who perform night shift work and work long hours can be exposed to various health problems (HPs). However, few studies have evaluated relationships between their rest breaks and HPs. This study was conducted to examine the relationships between long working hours, shift work, and insufficient rest breaks and HPs among Korean apartment janitors. Methods: Data on 1,212 selected male apartment janitors were obtained from the 3rd and 4th Korean Working Conditions Surveys. Demographic and occupational characteristics were collected using self-reported questionnaires. Rest breaks at work were classified as "sufficient" or "insufficient." Long working hours were considered as working more than 60 hours per week. Zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression was performed to investigate the effects of shift work and long working hours on HPs and the effects of rest breaks on relationships between HPs and long working hours and shift work. Results: Among those with insufficient rest breaks at work, significant associations were found between long working hours and the risk of HPs [odds ratio (OR) = 1.489; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.038-2.136] and work-related HPs (WRHPs) [OR 1.621; 95% CI = 1.156-2.272], and between shift work and HPs [OR = 1.603; 95% CI = 1.084-2.372]. These relationships became nonsignificant when sufficient rest breaks were provided. Conclusion: It is important to provide breaks at work to reduce HPs because of long working hours and shift work among aged workers such as apartment janitors.
The use of basic fibroblast growth factor which function as potent biologic mediators regulating numerous activities of wound healing has been suggested for the promotion of periodontal regeneration. The mitogenic effects of basic fibroblast growth factor on human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts were evaluated by determining the incorporation of 5-Bromo-2'deoxy-uridine into DNA of the cells in a dose -dependent manner. The cells which were prepared were the primary cultured gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells from human the fourth or sixth subpassages were used in the experiments. The cells which were seeded DMEM contain 10% FBS. The added concentrations of basic fibroblast growth factor were 0.1, 1, 10, 50, $l00{\eta}g/ml$ and basic fibroblast growth factor were added to the quiescent cells for 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. They were labeled with $10{\mu}l/200{\mu}l$ 5Bromo-2'-deoxy-uridine for the last 6 hours of each culture. The results of the five determinants were presented as mean and S.D.. The results were as follows. : The DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts was increased dose dependently by basic fibroblast growth factor at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The similar mitogenic effects were at the 24 and 48 hours of basic fibroblast growth factor, but the DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts generally decreased at 72 hours. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells was increased dose dependently to $50{\eta}g/ml$ by basic fibroblast growth factor at 24, 48 and 72 hours, but the DNA synthetic activity decreased at $l00{\eta}g/ml$ of each hour. Generally the maximum mitogenic effects were at the 48 hours application of basic fibroblast growth factor. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells generally decreased lower at 72 hours than at 24, 48 hours the application of basic fibroblast growth factor. In the comparison of DNA synthetic activity between human gingival fibroblasts and human periodontal ligament cells, human periodontal ligament cells had slightly higher proliferation activity than human gingival fibroblasts for a longer time at the high dosage of the basic fibroblast growth factor. In conclusion, basic fibroblast growth factor have important roles in the stimulation of DNA synthesis in human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts, and thus may be useful for clinical applications in periodontal regenerative procedures.
Epidermal growth factor(EGF) is one of polypeptide growth factors. EGF has been reported as a biological mediator which regulates activities of wound healing process including the cell proliferation, migration and metabolism. The purposes of this study is to evaluate the effects of EGF on the human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblast cells that promote regeneration of periodntal tissue. The mitogenic effects of epidermal growth factor on human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts were evaluated by determining the incorporation of 5-Bromo-2'-deoxy-uridine into DNA of the cells in a dose dependent manner. The prepared cells were the primary cultured gingival fibroblast and periodontal ligament cells from humans, the fourth or sixth subpassages were used in the experiments. Cells were seeded in DMEM containing 10% FBS. 1, 10, 50, 100, $200{\eta}g/ml$ and epidermal growth factor were added to the quiescent cells for 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. They were labeled with $10\{mu}l/200{\mu}l$ 5-Bromo-2'-deoxy-uridine for the last 6 hours of each culture. The results of the five determinants were presented as mean and S.D.. The results were as follows : The DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts were increased dose dependently by epidermal growth factor at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The mitogenic effects were similar at the 24 and 48 hours of epidermal growth factor, but the DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts generally decreased at 72 hours. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells were increased dose dependently by epidermal growth factor at 24 hours but the DNA synthetic activity decreased at $200{\eta}g/ml$ of each hour. Generally the maximum mitogenic effects were observed at the 48 hours application of epidermal growth factor. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells generally decreased lower at 24, 72 hours than at 48 hours the application of epidermal growth factor. In the comparison of DNA synthetic activity between human gingival fibroblasts and human periodontal ligament cells, human periodontal ligament cells had slightly higher proliferation activity than human gingival fibroblasts for a longer time at the high dosage of the epidermal growth factor. In conclusion, epidermal growth factor have important roles in the stimulation of DNA synthesis in human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts, and thus may be useful for clinical applications in periodontal regenerative procedures.
This study aims to demonstrate the effect of chitosan, one of the natural chelator, on the ultrastructural changes in the mouse liver caused by cadmium. A total of 60 healthy ICR that weighted 30 gm $({\pm}2gm)$ was used for experiment. The experimental group was divided into three groups; group A, B, and C. The group A and B administrated cadmium (4.0 mg/kg) to the intraperitoneal after pretreated with chitosan (0.5% solution) for 30 and 7 days, respectively. Each group was observed at 12, 24, 48, 72 hours and one week after injected cadmium. The results were as follows: 1. Group A The nuclear membrane and the chromatin were normal shapes at overall the time. The inner and outer membranes of the mitochondria damaged a little but almost normal in shapes. And electron-density showed slightly compacted. some enlarged rER (rough endoplasmic reticulum) showed at 12 hours. At 48 hours, typical lamellae of the rER were reformed, and a lot of transvesicles observed around them. To 48 hours, sER (smooth endoplasmic reticulum) was slightly dilated. From 72 hours, sER rehalizated in normal shape. 2. Group B Nuclear membranes were rounded-shape and chromatin showed evenly. To 72 hours, a lot of mitochondria observed around rER and development of cristae showed weakly. But at one week, cristae were clear and electron-density of matrix showed high. At 72 hours lamellae of rER showed some broken, but were reformed at one week. Also at one week, glycogen granules evenly showed over cytoplasm. 3. Group C At 12 hours, Nucleus showed the condensation of nuclear membrane and clear condensation at 24 hours. However, nuclear membrane had a slightly rounded-shape from 72 hours. From 12 hours to the one week, mitochondria showed the dilation of inner cavity and weak development of cristae. Also electron-density of matrix was a little low. Occasionally, destruction of inner and outer membrane observed at one week. The dilation of cisternae and destruction of lamellae of rER showed from 12 to 48 hours. From 72 hours, rER showed slightly dilated only. And lamella observed at one week. In sER, dilation of inner cavity was observed during whole period. These results suggest that chitosan attenuates the toxic effect of the cadmium in the mouse liver.
It has been well known that ischemia and reperfusion injury to skeletal muscle following an acute arterial occlusion causes significant morbidity and mortality. The skeletal muscle, which contains high energy phosphate compounds, has ischemic tolerance. During the ischemia, the ATP is catalyzed to hypoxanthine anaerobically and hypoxanthine dehydrogenase is converted to xanthine oxidase. During reperfusion, the hypoxanthine is catalyzed to xanthine by xanthine oxidase under $O_2$, presence and that results in production of cytotoxic oxygen free radicals. These cytotoxic free radicals, $O_2^-,\;H_{2}O_2,\;OH^-$, are toxic and make lesions in skeletal muscle during reperfusion. The authors perform the present study to investigate the effects of allopurinol, the inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, on reperfused ischemic skeletal muscles by observing the ultrastructural changes of the muscle fibers. A total of 48 healthy Sprague-Dawley rats weighing from 200 g to 250 g were used as experimental animals. Under urethane(3.0mg/kg., IP) anesthesia, lower abdominal incision was done and the left common iliac artery were ligated by using vascular clamp for 1, 2 and 6 hours. The left rectus femoris muscles were obtained at 6 hours after the removal of vascular clamp. In the allopurinol pretreated group, 50mg/kg of allopurinol was administered once a day for 2 days and before 2 hours of ischemia. The specimens were sliced into $1mm^3$ and prepared by routine methods for electron microscopic observations. All preparations were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate, and then observed with Hitachi -600 transmission electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. In 1 hour ischemia/6 hours reperfused rectus femoris muscles of rats, decreased glycogen particles and electron density of mitochondrial matrix and dilated terminal cisternae are seen. In 2 hours ischemia/6 hours repersed rectus femoris muscles of rats, mitochondria with electron lucent matrix, irregularly dilated triad and spheromembranous bodies are observed. In 6 hours ischemia/6 hours reperfused rectus femoris muscles of rats, irregularly arranged myofibrils, and many spheromembranous bodies, fat droplets and lysosome are seen. 2. In 1 hour ischemia/6 hours reperfused rectus femoris muscles of rats pretreated with allopurinol, decreased glycogen particle and dilated cisternae of sarcoplasmic reticulum and triad are observed. In 2 hours ischemia/6 hours reperfused rectus femoris muscles of rats pretreated with allopurinol decreased electron density of mitochondrial matrix and spheromembranous bodies are seen. In 6 hours ischemia/6 hours reperfused rectus femoris muscles of rats pretreated with allopurinol, mitochondria with electron lucent matrix, spheromembranous bodies and dilated cisternae of sarcoplasmic reticulum and terminal cistern are observed. The results suggest that the allopurinol attenuates the damages of the skeletal muscles of rats during ischemia and reperfusion.
