System identification of structures is one of the important aspects of structural health monitoring. The accuracy and efficiency of identification results is affected severely by measurement noises, especially when the structure system is large, such as bridge structures, and when online system identification is required. In this paper, the least square estimation (LSE) method is used combined with the substructure approach for identifying structural parameters of a cable-stay bridge with large degree of freedoms online. Numerical analysis is carried out by first dividing the bridge structure into smaller substructures and then estimates the parameters of each substructure online using LSE method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of identifying structural parameters, however, the accuracy and efficiency of identification results depend highly on the noise sensitivities of loading region, loading pattern as well as element size.
Most of design parameters of Railway Structures are determined by the serviceability requirements, rather than the structural safety requirements. The serviceability requirements come from Ensuring of Running Safety and Ride Comfort of Train, Reduction of Track Maintenance Work Track-Bridge Interaction should be considered in the design of railway structures. In this study, a numerical method which precisely evaluate an axial force in rail and a rail expansion and contraction when turnout exist in succession on a CWR on a ballasted or on a ballastless track of bridge is developed. From the parameter studies using the developed method, additional stress of stock rail almost 25% is generated due to stock and lead rail interaction, even embankment not bridge. In case of ballasted track, additional stress of stock rail on bridge is very greater than on embankment, and therefore require detailed review in bridge design with turnout. Stresses of turnout rails on bridge are very sensitive according to the installed positions. In case of ballastless track, Stresses of turnout rails are similar as those of normal track
In general, structures in service gradually lose original performance according to time due to initial defects in design and construction, or exposure to unfavorable external conditions such as repeated loading or deteriorating environment, and in extreme cases, may collapse in large disaster. Therefore, in order to maintain the serviceability of structures at optimal level, advanced structure measuring system which can inform optimal time point and method of maintenance is required in addition to accurate prediction of residual life the structure by periodic inspection. To guarantee the safety level of bridge structure and to prevent from disaster, the integration of safety network for bridge structures are needed. Therefore in this study, to enhance the effectiveness of safety network for bridge, the connection methodologies between safety network and pre-installed bridge monitoring system are investigated.
This paper presents a new circuit topology and its digital control scheme for a half-bridge resonant inverter. As the proposed half-bridge inverter can be operated in load-freewheeling modes, the pulse-width modulation (PWM) method can be used for the output power control. The proposed half-bridge inverter is based on the resonant frequency-tracking algorithm with the goal of maintaining the unity of the output displacement factor of the load impedance even in varying conditions. In this paper, the operation principle, electrical characteristics, and detailed digital control scheme of the proposed half-bridge resonant inverter are described. The experimental results of the prototype experimental setup to verify the validity of the proposed half-bridge inverter are presented and discussed.
This study aims to analyze the risk factors caused by object damage and third-party damage loss in actual bridge construction based on past insurance premium payment data from major domestic insurers for bridge construction projects, and develop a quantitative loss prediction model. For the development of quantitative bridge construction loss model, the dependent variable was selected as the loss ratio, and the independent variable adopted 1) Technical factors: superstructure type, foundation type, construction method, and bridge length 2) Natural hazards: flood anf Typhoon, 3) Project information: total construction duration, total cost and ranking. Among the selected independent variables, superstructure type, construction method, and project period were shown to affect the ratio of bridge construction losses, while superstructure, foundation, flood and ranking were shown to affect the ratio of the third-party losses.
In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.
This paper deals with damage detection in a girder bridge using transmissibility functions as input data to Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The original contribution in this work is that these two novel methods are combined to detect damage in a bridge. The damage was simulated in a real bridge in Vietnam, i.e. Ca-Non Bridge. Finite Element Method (FEM) of this bridge was used to show the reliability of the proposed technique. The vibration responses at some points of the bridge under a moving truck are simulated and used to calculate the transmissibility functions. These functions are then used as input data to train the ANNs, in which the target is the location and the severity of the damage in the bridge. After training successfully, the network can be used to assess the damage. Although simulated responses data are used in this paper, the practical application of the technique to real bridge data is potentially high.
This paper describes a study of the mapping relationship between the vertical deformation of bridge structures and rail deformation of high-speed railway, taking the interlayer interactions of the bridge subgrade CRTS II ballastless slab track system (HSRBST) into account. The differential equations and natural boundary conditions of the mapping relationship between the vertical deformation of bridge structures and rail deformation were deduced according to the principle of stationary potential energy. Then an analytical model for such relationship was proposed. Both the analytical method proposed in this paper and the finite element numerical method were used to calculate the rail deformations under three typical deformations of bridge structures and the evolution of rail geometry under these circumstances was analyzed. It was shown that numerical and analytical calculation results are well agreed with each other, demonstrating the effectiveness of the analytical model proposed in this paper. The mapping coefficient between bridge structure deformation and rail deformation showed a nonlinear increase with increasing amplitude of the bridge structure deformation. The rail deformation showed an obvious "following feature"; with the increase of bridge span and fastener stiffness, the curve of rail deformation became gentler, the track irregularity wavelength became longer, and the performance of the rail at following the bridge structure deformation was stronger.
With the advent of computer, the finite element method has become a most powerful numerical method for structural analysis. However, bridge designers are reluctant to use it in their designs because of its complex nature and its being time consuming in the preparation of the input data and analyzing the results. This paper describes the development of a computer based finite element model using the idea of eccentric beam elements for the analysis of slab-on-girder bridges. The proposed method is supported by a laboratory test using a reinforced concrete bridge model. Other bridge analytical schemes are also introduced and compared with the proposed method. The main aim of the comparison is to prove the effectiveness of the shell and eccentric beam modelling in the studies of lateral load distribution of slab-on-girder bridges. It is concluded that the proposed finite element method gives a closer to real idealization and its developed computer program, SHECAN, is also very simple to use. It is highly recommended to use it as an analytical tool for the design of slab-on-girder bridges.
Piles of a bridge pier are connected with a column through a pile cap(footing). Behavior of the pile foundation can be different according to the connection method between piles and the pile cap. This difference causes a change of the design method. Connection methods between pile heads and the pile cap are divided into two groups ; rigid connections and hinge connections. KHBDC(Korea Highway Bridge Design Code) has specified to use rigid connection method for the highway bridge. In the rigid connection method, maximum bending moment of a pile occurs at the pile head and this helps the pile to prevent the excessive displacement. Rigid methods are also good to improve the seismic performance. However some specifications prescribe that conservative results through investigations for both the fixed-head condition and the free-head condition should be reflected in the design. This statement may induce an over-estimated design for the bridge which have very good quality structures with casing covered drilled shafts and the PC-house contained pile cap. Because the assumption of free-head conditions (hinge connections) are unreal for the elevated pile cap system with multiple piles of the long span sea-crossing bridges. On the other hand, elastic displacement method to evaluate the pile reactions under the pile cap is not suitable for this type of bridges due to impractical assumptions. So, full modeling techniques which analyze the superstructure and the substructure simultaneously should be performed. Loads and stress state of the very large diameter drilled shaft and the pile cap for Incheon Bridge which will the longest bridge in Korea were investigated through the full modeling for rigid connection conditions.
