During the detailed geological survey around the southern Yangsan Fault, we newly found a Quaternary fault outcrop, which cuts unconsolidated sediments. The fault named the Sinwoo site, located in the Sinwoo pasture, Miho-ri, Duseo-myeon, Ulsan metropolitan city, is the first discovered Quaternary fault near the western part of the south Yangsan Fault. In this study, we provide information on characteristics of fault geometry and unconsolidated sediment at Sinwoo site based on the analysis data of topography, drainage, and lineament around the study site. The fault site is situated at pediment slope, but fan-shaped middle terrace, as well as thick sediment exposed at low terrace, indicates that the unconsolidated sediments have been deposited in the alluvial fan environment. The drainage develops to the third-order drainage system, and the first and the second drainage system meet at right angles to each other and form a radial drainage pattern. In addition, the NE-SW direction lineaments can be identified on the basis of the curvature of the river and the step of the topographic relief, running over the Sinwoo site. The fault of $N30-35^{\circ}E/79-82^{\circ}SE$ shows ~ 5.8 m apparent vertical offset and dominantly reverse-slip sense based on slickenline, rotation of pebbles, and drag folding at footwall. However, some discontinuous sediments observed in the footwall are interpreted as fissure-filling materials due to the strike-slip movement. Now, we are under multidisciplinary investigations of additional field survey and age dating in order to determine the evolution of Sinwoo site fault during the Quaternary.
Damyang Wetland, a riverine wetland, has been designated as the first wetland protection area in South Korea and is a candidate area for the Mudeungsan Area UNESCO Global Geopark. The Damyang Wetland area is the upstream part of the Yeongsan River and is now a relatively wide plain. To reconstruct the sedimentary environment around the Damyang Wetland, core samples were obtained, and sedimentary facies analysis, AMS and OSL age dataings, grain size, and geochemical analyses were carried out. In addition, comprehensive sedimentary environment changes were reconstructed using previous core data obtained from this wetland area. In the Yeongsan River upstream area, where the Damyang Wetland is located, fluvial terrace deposits formed during the late Pleistocene are distributed in an area relatively far from the river. As a gravel layer is widely distributed throughout the plains, Holocene sediments were likely deposited in a braided river environment when the sea level stabilized after the middle Holocene. Then, as the sedimentary environment changed from a braided river to a meandering river, the influx of sand-dominated sediments increased, and a floodplain environment was formed around the river. In addition, based on the pollen data, it is inferred that the climate was warm and humid around 6,000 years ago, with wetland deposits forming afterward. The the trench survey results of the river area around the Damyang Wetland show that a well-rounded gravel layer occurs in the lower part, covered by the sand layer. The Damyang Wetland was likely formed after the construction of Damyang Lake in the 1970s, as muddy sediments were deposited on the sand layer.
A study on the geological structure and geothermal gradient distribution was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of developing a new geothermal field in the Yusong area. It is suggested that geothermal water in the Yusong area is closely related with faults, dykes, and their dipping characteristics with the study of geothermal gradient distribution. A fault of EW direction locates in northern boundary of the study area and another fault of N40{\citc}W$ crosses the EW fault at the western part of the study area. Locations of faults are recognized quite well by lineaments, geophysical exploration and geothermal gradient distribution characteristics. Three sets of dyke are found in the study area. According to the result of the geothermal gradient distribution study, the location of geothermal anomaly belt and dykes coincide each other, and the area has the temperature gradient of larger than 3$^{\circ}C$ between the depths of 0.5m and 1.0m below ground surface. The thermal anomaly belt those temperature gradient is larger than 2.5$^{\circ}C$ between the depths of 0.5m and 1.Om below ground surface is expected in the direction of N80{\citc}W$ in the study area. The dirping of dyke is almost vertical according to the linear distribution of dykes on surface and the results of geophysical survey. From the distribution of geothermal anomaly belt and the locations of dyke, three locations for the development of hot spring water could be recommended and the depth that ensure over 4$0^{\circ}C$ geotheraral water is estimated as 170~200m below the ground surface.
The variation of H/F coefficient (Hubnerite/Feberite coefficient) and the temperature of formation with depth have been studied for the hydrothermal tungsten-quartz veins from Ssangjeon, Weolag, Cheongyang, and Sannae mines. All samples were selected at the same paragenetic stage and mineral assemblege according to depth. The studied mines provide an opportunity to examine and regional variations in wolframite composition in different provinces. The formation temperature is linearly related to the depth. At the Weolag, Cheongyang and Sannae mines, the H/F ratio of wolframite and filling temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz show a general tendency to decrease at shallow levels, in spite of different geological settings. This implies the pH of fluid will decrease vertically with falling temperature and the high H/F ratio of wolframite in deep zone result in an increase of pH with depth. The Ssangjeon mine exhibits a tendency to increase slightly upwards at shallow level. This implies a different geochemical environment (high pH environment) for the Ssangjeon mine, as compared to the other three mines. The H/F coefficient pattern suggests that it is a useful geothermometer for vein-type tungsten deposits in Korea. The H/F coefficient as an indication of depth should be examined for use in exploration.
The distribution characteristics of incised meander river are analysed concerning topography, geology, stream order and altitude. Additionally geomorphological development of the Korean peninsular is considered with incised meander. The main findings are as follows: 1. The incised meander is intensively distributed on the west and north slope of T'aebak and Sobaek mountain range, but sparsely distributed on the opposite slopes. 2. Geologically, the occurrence rate of incised meander is high orderly as follows: Joseon supergroup, Pyeongan supergroup, Daedong supergroup metamorphic rock, Gyeongsang supergroup, and granite. The incised meander is developed well on the following conditions: hard rocks against weathering, stratified structure, geologic arrange across the river channel and contacting zone of geological formations. 3. The higher stream orders are, the higher occurrence of incised meander is. 4. Comparing the altitude of present river bed with the summit level of restored map, it is supposed that the incised meander rivers have been dissected about 300-500m down ward. 5. Considering the distribution characteristic of incised meander, it is suggested that not only T'aebak mountain range but Sobaek mountain range is the axis of asymmetrical up-warping in the Korean peninsular. 6. Considering the distribution characteristic of incised meander on the restored map and the stream order, it seems that present incised meander channel was inherited from antecedent meander river that had flowed on High and Middle level erosion surface. But the channel pattern has been modified.
Various interpretations on the boundary between the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system and the Great Limestone series of the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system, and on the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system have been yielded by the previous studies, and they are still in hot debate. The present work has mainly studied on the boundary between the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ and $Chos{\check{o}}n$ systems in the south of $Jech{\check{o}}n$, and the geology in its vicinity to clarify the previous misinterpretations if any on the geologic structure and in trun stratigraphy of the area concerned. The boundary between the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system and the Great Limestone series of the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system has been thought to be (1) gradational relation which means two systems are the same formation, (2) unconformable relation in which the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system overlies the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system, (3) unconformable relation in which the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system overlies the Okchon system indicating that the age of the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system is Precambrian, and (4) fault contact in which the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system of Precambrian age comes in contact with the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system of Cambro-Ordovician age. The present study clearly found that the relationship between the two systems is a fault zone contact. Shear zone of a width of 300 to 400m is developed, and andesitic volcanics and basic dikes are intruded along the fault zone. This fault contact is exactly the north extension of the Bonghwajae fault, which was denominated long time ago by two of the present authors. The eastern side of the fault has been uplifted so that the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation of the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system cropped out in the zone of the Great Limestone series. All the previous workers thought that the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation rests on the Great Limestone series, but the present study found an overthrust having a strike of $N8^{\circ}E$ and dip of $30^{\circ}NW$ between them, and the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation has thrusted over the Great Limestone series at the central part of the study area. In the southern and northern parts of this uplifted $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation, the Great Limestone series rests unconformably on it. In the eastern part of the study area where the Mt. Dangdu is located and the previous workers thought that the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation rests on the Great Limestone series, Precambrian basement rock whose age is older than 1720+50 m.y. crops out in the northern part of the east-west trending high angle fault, and the Great Limestone series rests unconformably on the basement.
The Yeongchun area is located at the central part of the Danyang Coalfield, where Precambrian granitoids, Cambro-Ordovician Choseon Supergroup, Carboniferous-early Triassic Pyeongan Supergroup, middle Triassic-Jurassic Bansong Group and extrusive tuffs are exposed. The rocks in the area underwent four phases of deformation, which are (a) $D_1$ : Movement of the Okdong Fault, (b) $D_2$ : Formation of NW-SE trending folds and stretching lineations, (c) $D_3$: Movement of the Gagdong Thrust Fault and associated structures of NNE-SSW trending folds, and (d) $D_4$ : E-W trending strike-slip faults and folds. During the $D_3$-event, flexural slip deformation intensively affected rocks in the area. Strain measurements show relatively low strain intensity in the area. The types of strain ellipsoid are prolate in the hangingwall area and those near to the footwall area range from plane strain to weak oblate. The oblate type is developed in the region far from the footwall area.
Agricultural reservoirs seek human convenience by supplying agricultural water and providing flood damage effects and rest areas at the same time, but preventing them from aging reservoirs and earthquakes is important. The safety of levees is influenced by field material properties such as soil parameter values of the granular materials that make up the levees, but since precision safety diagnosis or general literature values are diverted, the final safety factors are limited to material properties alone. Since safety factors are determined by physical characteristic values and embankment shapes and have a significant impact on safety factors, accurate contemplation is required when examining reinforced cross sections. Therefore, this study analyzed the case of reasonable and economical reinforcement intersections when designing '◯◯reservoir' in Goheung-geun, Jeollanam-do using the GEP-SLOPE program to enable rational economic design of reinforcement intersections through repeated reviews. As a result of reducing and analyzing the first, second, and third seismic reinforcement of the levees, it was confirmed that the safety ratio was secured even with a significantly smaller amount of reinforcement than the first, second, and lower slopes by obtaining design standards of 1.20. In addition, when determining all seismic reinforcement cross-sectional shapes, it was confirmed that the shape that reinforces only the lower side rather than the upper side of the slope and the entire slope was economical with minimized cross-sectional reinforcement.
Shear behavior dependent on the shape and roughness of rock joints can greatly influence the stability of the ground and rock structures. The efficient design of rock structures requires understanding of the shear behavior due to joints and accurate calculation of the shear strength. This work reports numerical shear tests using PFC2D on No. 1 (JCR-1), with smooth joints, and No. 7 (JRC-7) and No. 9 (JRC-9), with relatively rough joints, for the 10 shapes of standard joint profiles proposed by Barton and Choubey (1977). The aim was to investigate the shear behavior of rock joints with respect to their roughness. The results show the maximum shear stress to be about 3.2 to 5.0 times greater in the rougher JRC-7 and JRC-9 joints than in smoother JRC-1. The maximum shear displacement was approximately 4.1 to 5.8 times greater at the first normal stress than at the second. The rougher joints showed friction angles of the rock joints that were approximately 1.8 to 3.9 times greater than that in the smooth joint. Overall, increasing the rock joint roughness increased the maximum shear stress and friction angle.
In this study was conducted to measure the water content and dry unit weight of the ground using TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) in order to supplement the problems of the conventional compaction management method. The Flat TDR system is a device that does not cause ground disturbance, and in order to verify the measured values, the dry density and water content were measured for samples of the ground subject at 7 sites other than Jumunjin Standard Temple. The water content section was divided into 6 sections of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18%, and the experimental results were confirmed according to the unified classification method. As a result of the indoor experiment, the water content showed an error of about 0.7% for the SP sample and about 1.3% for the SM sample. In addition, the dry unit weight confirmed an error of about 7% for the SP sample and about 5% for the SM sample. It was confirmed that stable values were derived in sandy or silty sandy ground except for clay or gravel. Through the experimental results, it was confirmed that the measured values of the flat TDR system derive similar values to the existing traditional compaction management method, and it was determined that the flat TDR equipment was suitable for construction sites that require quick constructability and economic feasibility.
