This study aims to estimate, in monetary figures, the environmental value of recreational theme park- Huis Ten Bosch (HTB), located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, through the integration of both contingent valuation method (CVM) and remote sensing. In the analysis, we have estimated the environmental value of HTB through CVM. Then, we have compared this amount with the valuation made by using remote sensing. The results of the study would provide the interest groups some monetary base, to value the worth of environmental restoration activities undertaken by HTB.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the climatic water balance of the Korean peninsula using meteorological data and the evapotranspiration (ET) derived from NOAA/AVHRR. Quantifying water balance components is important to understand the basic hydrology. In this study, a simple method to estimate the ET was proposed based on a regression approach between NDVI and Morton's actual ET using NOAA/AVHRR data. The Morton's actual ET for land surface conditions was evaluated using a daily meteorological data from 77 weather stations, and the monthly averaged Morton's ETs for each land cover was compared with the monthly NDVIs during the year 2001. According to the climatic water balance analysis, water deficit and surplus distributed maps were created from spatial rainfall, soil moisture, and actual and potential ETs map. The results clearly showed that the temporal and spatial characteristics of dryness and wetness may be detected and mapped based on the wetness index.

Hyperspectral data has a great advantage to classify various surface materials that are spectrally similar. In this study, we attempted to classify man-made materials in urban area using Hyperion data. Hyperion imagery of Seoul was initially processed to minimize radiometric distortions caused by sensor and atmosphere. Using color aerial photographs. we defined seven man-made surfaces (concrete, asphalt road. railroad, buildings, roof, soil, shadow) for the classification in Seoul. The hyperspectral data showed the potential to identify those manmade materials that were difficult to be classified by multispectral data. However. the classification of road and buildings was not quite satisfactory due to the relatively low spatial resolution of Hyperion image. Further, the low radiometric quality of Hyperion sensor was another limitation for the application in urban area.

Although there have been wide range of studies to characterize forest stands based upon spectral information of satellite image, it was not fully understood the texture information of forest stand using high resolution data. The objective of this study is to evaluate several texture measures for characterizing forest stand structure, such as species composition, diameter at breast height(DBH), stand density, and age. High resolution IKONOS satellite imagery data were acquired in August 200 lover the forested area near Ulsan, Korea. Primary forest types were plantation pine, mixed forest, and natural deciduous forest of stand age ranging from 10 to 50 years old. Several GLCM-based texture measures were compared with forest stand characteristics. In overall, a texture measure (contrast) calculated using red band were better to differentiate species and age group than other texture measures and near infrared bands.

The purpose of this study is to arrange the digital maps of Hamamatsu City and to construct the map information system to support the prediction and restoration of Tokai earthquake disasters. The authors arrange the land condition map and compute the populations of each land surface conditions and revealed that $37\%$ of the whole population lives in the safe land, but $63\%$ lives in the rather unsafe surface condition. The authors also arrange the digital map of the main lines of water supply pipe lines in corporation with the Hamamatsu City Water Supply Department and revealed the rather dangerous pipe line area in case of Tokai earthquake.

The land use has changed rapidly since 1960s in accordance with urbanization in Seoul Metropolitan Region. As a result, the urban microclimate has undergone changes as well. This study aims to recognize trend of the urban heat island change which is caused by land use change during urbanization in large city. Thermal data of Landsat TM images in 1987 and 1999 were for land surface temperature change detection in the study.

Han River water landscape changes between 1966 and 2002 were detected by interpreting IKONOS images, aerial photographs. Digital photogrammetry technique was used in this process. Most of water landscape change are disappearance of sandbars and meandering streams in 1966. It is mainly due to the stream straightening for housing site development.

The West-East Nature Gas Pipeline is a great project in China. Advanced remote sensing technology combined with GIS and GPS is used to select the favorable plan from various possible routes through interpreting the information of topographic landform, regional geology, disaster geology, traffic conditions and nature environment from remote sensing images. There are a lot of changes in geographical and environmental factors along such pipelines due to the rapid development in China. Image maps produced from new satellite data can identify these changes and be used successfully not only on route-selection studies but also on in situ investigation, together with GPS. Results from detail analysis provide necessary information and parameters for plan, design and construction of the pipeline and they are also the basic data for the pipeline database. The set of techniques has been applied on planning and designing several pipelines successfully.

Two receiving systems were established at the Asian Center for Research on Remote Sensing (ACRoRS) to receive remote sensing data from NOAA AVHRR and Terra/Aqua MODIS sensors in October 1997 and May 2001, respectively. The data, which has been received in the research center, are very important to support and promote the remote sensing research activities for global environmental issues in Asia. Since the day of the establishment, many research and applications, which used these data, have been conducted. The data sets have been provided to researchers and users in many countries in the region to conduct research, to strengthen the research collaboration and education.

We developed a Near Real-Time Validation System (NRVS) for the Level-2 Products of AQUA Satellite. AQUA satellite is the second largest project of Earth Observing System (EOS) mission of NASA. This satellite provides the information of water cycle of the entire earth with many different forms. Among its products, we have used five kinds of level-2 geophysical parameters containing rain rate, sea surface wind speed, skin surface temperature, atmospheric temperature profile, and atmospheric humidity profile. To use these products in a scientific purpose, reasonable quantification is indispensable. In this paper we explain the near real-time validation system process and its detail algorithm. Its simulation results are also analyzed in a quantitative way. As reference data set in-situ measured meteorological data which are periodically gathered and provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) is processed. Not only site-specific analysis but also time-series analysis of the validation results are explained and detail algorithms are described.

This paper demonstrates the in-house development of the subsystem C&DH in a D-SAT satellite project of Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. (ATSB). D-SAT is a non-imaging satellite. It will carry a dosimeter as the payload for scientific objectives. Since one of the D-SAT project establishment intended objectives is to demonstrate the research and development skill of the ATSB engineers on the satellite system building, most of the subsystems of the D-SAT are developed in-house including the C&DH subsystem. C&DH subsystem plays an important role for managing data handling tasks and general operation of the satellite system. The C&DH development includes the research and study on the hardware and software design, the design of both the hardware and software, the development of the software system, the integration between the software and the hardware system and the implementation of the subsystem into the satellite system. This program allows ATSB to accomplish the engineers with expertise not only in the C&DH subsystem but other subsystems too besides developing knowledge in the management of a space project that covers not only on the technical issues but issues relating to the economic, political and legal issues.

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is a remote sensing technique capable of measuring ground surface deformation with sub-centimeter precision and spatial resolution in tens-of-meters over a large region. This paper highlights our on-going investigations of Aleutian volcanoes with SAR images acquired from European ERS-1 and ERS-2, Canadian Radarsat-l, and Japanese JERS-l satellites.

Recently the interferometric synthetic aperture radiometer with sub-Y-type antenna array was suggested to improve the spatial resolution than that of conventional Y-type with the same number of antenna elements. The sub-Y-type performance has been reported under a point source target. In this paper, the performance of sub-Y-type is evaluated under contiguous objects. The angular resolution of sub-Y-type with 52 antennas was compared with that of Y-type with the 40 antennas. The images of sub-Y -type and Y-type array were simulated under the contiguous objects. The sub-Y-type showed higher resolution than Y-type in the simulation and experiments. The sub-Y-type has high spatial resolution than Y-type in case of contiguous source as well as single point source.

This paper reports the observation of the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) phase anomaly on a newly reclaimed mudflat, Hwaong, in west coast of Korea, detected by a series of Radarsat-l SAR data obtained mostly during 2003. The observed phase anomaly could be from subsidence of mud land caused by volumetric contraction of mud in dry season. This process must have been initiated from March 2002 when tidal water supply to this region was permanently blocked by the newly constructed embankment. The maximum subsidence rate measured from InSAR signal is about 3 cm per month. The local heterogeneity of the subsidence rate over the reclaimed mudflat may indicate various mud composition, surface-subsurface hydrological processes, or subsurface information of the mud and basement rock structure. In-situ measurement must follow to support this observation from space.

The procurement of a mobile microwave scatterometer platform involved the consideration to ensure a mobile platform and equipment selected full-filled technical requirement and safety standard in Malaysia. Designing, and modification works involved engineering methodology in determining and selecting a suitable hydraulic telescopic boom that suit a selected mobile platform available locally. The mobile platform is a delivery system for microwave remote sensing microwave scatterometer and other accessories to any locations in Malaysia. Total loading to be carried by the mobile platform is 4500 kg and its overall weight must be 16,000 kg as recommended by hydraulic telescopic boom manufacturers. The telescopic boom will elevate microwave scatterometer system including the antenna to a maximum height of 27 m, and can also be rotated through $3600^{\circ}$. A mechanism is incorporated in the system to enable tracking or monitoring angular movement of the hydraulic telescopic boom when positioned towards predetermined target.

Change detection using aerial and satellite images is one of the important research topics in photogrammetry and image interpretation. It is of particular importance especially in the fields of military, political and administrative affairs. When there is a need to detect changes in multi-temporal images, the most efficient methods for change detection and thresholds of change/no change area need to be chosen. Also, the images obtained from the various methods need to be analyzed. To do so, we need a system that can support our decision making process. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the Decision Support System for Change Detection. This system is composed of Data Base, Model Base and Graphic User Interface(GUI). Data base is a compilation of previous change detection results, and Model Base comprise of numerous operations. The data can be input and have the results of change detection analyzed by using GUI. In this paper, we will explain the entire operation of the system and demonstrate the level of its effectiveness.

Hsinchu Science Park, one of the most productive electronic sites in the world, is located at Hsinchu County. Hsinchu County Government is entitled for daily management to pursue the objectives of making every county citizen prosperous. Several web-based management information systems have been developed for county management and were widely implemented. However, forest management is one of several tasks which need development of web-based geographic information systems. The objectives of this paper are to develop GIS for forest management at Hsinchu County in order to solve problems encountered in the rapid changing circumstance. The objectives of forest management at Hsinchu County have been changed a little bit in the last decade. Now, it mainly focuses on public and private forest, tree planting, wind break forest management, and plane forest planting. The major ingredients of GIS for forest management are user-friendly, task-oriented, and direct linking to the existing GIS at Hsinchu County. AreIMS and ArcGIS were used for web-based GIS. Field operations of forest management depend on PDA and GPS such that ArcPAD is implemented both on personal computers and PDA. Computer programming is required for database management and development of application modules in forest management. Color digital orthophoto maps at scale of 1:5000 provide very useful background information. Forest management at Hsinchu County now is operated in an efficient way that GIS, remote sensing, GPS and PDA are working smoothly.

For successful route guidance, navigation systems should provide to users more realistic and actual information such as photographs than those in either 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional models. In this paper, we propose a method for servicing photographs for route guidance in navigation systems. The method includes how to acquire photographs with the most successful view for the guidance, how to construct link information among them and navigational map data, and how to provide the images to users efficiently.

In this study the spatial distribution characters of burnt forest site was first considered by analyzing spatial data and monitoring forest landscape before/after lire to restore the site. Then suitable tree species on each forest site should be selected through the weighted score analysis of GIS analysis methods. Finally. the best forest stand arrangement method could be simulated on the system for the advanced reforestation technology in Korea. For this purpose, the virtual reforestation system was implemented by using the concept of virtual GIS and CBD (Component Based Development) method. By use of this system the change of forest landscape of burnt forest area some years after reforestation practice could be detected and monitored by applying the site index and 3D modeling method.

With the proliferation of smart devices, applications under ubiquitous environment must provide transparent access to computer resources. However, existing u-Logistics systems can not properly react on such requirements, because the status information of objects is input only in fixed milestones by system's operators. In this paper, we introduce an event notification service suitable for u-Logistics environment. The system is based on RFID infrastructure and provides real-time tracking by combining the event of objects with location information received from GPS satellites. The system also provides a graphical user interface based on a state/transition approach, making it easy that clients facilitate definition of profile, and uses XML structure to more easily represent and exchange events.

Telematics is an emerging industrial field made up of the convergence of technologies. The key technologies for Telematics are server-side technology, terminal-side technology, communication-related technology, and positioning technology. Standardization in Telematics is now getting more notice these days. Domestic situation is explained for several related facilities such as ETRI, TTA, and Telematics Standardization Forum. In this paper, we will focus especially on the standard reference model that is the most fundamental framework of Telematics technology standardization. In the reference model, the Telematics system is composed of Telematics client part, communication part, and Telematics server part. The Telematics client part consists of terminal, positioning device, and car electronic devices. Communication part can be composed of various telecommunication channels such as CDMA, WLAN, DMB, WiBro, etc. which can guarantee the seamless two-way communication. Telematics server part is composed of TSP(Telematics Service Provider) server and CP(Contents Provider) servers gathering and managing the various Telematics services. This Telematics reference model is expected to be utilized as the base architecture in developing the technology and standards from now on.

Ubiquitous sensor network is to manage and collect information autonomously by communicating user around device. Security requirements in Ubiquitous based on sensor network are as follows: a location of sensor, a restriction of performance by low electric power, communication by broadcasting, etc. We propose new mutual authentication protocol using a low power of sensor node. This protocol solved a low power problem by reducing calculation overload of sensor node using two steps, RM(Register Manager) and AM(Authentication Manager). Many operations performing the sensor node itself have a big overload in low power node. Our protocol reduces the operation number from sensor node. Also it is mutual authentication protocol in Ubiquitous network, which satisfies mutual authentication, session key establishment, user and device authentication, MITM attack, confidentiality, integrity, and is safe the security enemy with solving low electric power problem.

In this paper, we propose policy-based authentication framework which consists of policy server, CA and a policy language designed for ubiquitous environments. Using policies allows the security functionality to be modified without changing the implementation of the entities involved. Policy-based authentication framework needs to be very expressive but lightweight and easily extensible. We propose the feasibility of our policy language and policy-based authentication framework in ubiquitous-environment through a prototype and solve the problem that traditional framework have a simple registration and authentication to provide dynamic service.

Recently according to developing of bioinformatics techniques, there are a lot of researches about large amount of biological data. And a variety of files and databases are being used to manage these data efficiently. However, because of the deficiency of standardization there are a lot of problems to manage the data and transform one into the other among heterogeneous formats. We are interested in integrating. saving, and managing gene and protein sequence data generated through sequencing. Accordingly, in this paper the goal of our research is to implement the system to manage sequence data and transform a sequence file format into other format. To satisfy these requirements, we adopt BSML (Bioinformatics Sequence Markup Language) as the standard to manage the bioinformatics data. And then we integrate and store the heterogeneous 리at file formats using BSML schema based DTD. And we developed the system to apply the characteristics of object-oriented database and to process XPath query, one of the efficient structural query. that saves and manages XML documents easily.

Extrapolation off the boundaries of scattered data is an intrinsic feature of interpolation. However, extrapolation causes serious problems in stereo-vision and mapping, which has not been investigated carefully. In this paper, we present novel schemes to eliminate the extrapolation effects for the generation of a digital elevation model (DEM). As a first step, we devise point distribution criteria, namely COG (Center of Gravity) and ECI (Empty Center Index), and apply rigorous and robust elimination based on the criteria. Compared with other methods, the proposed schemes are computationally fast and applicable to a wide range of interpolation techniques.

High-resolution remotely sensed data such as SPOT-5 imagery are employed to study the effectiveness of the watershed segmentation algorithm. Existing problems in this approach are identified and appropriate solutions are proposed. As a case study, the panchromatic SPOT-5 image of part of Beijing urban areas has been segmented by using the MATLAB software. In segmentation, the structuring element has been firstly created, then the gaps between objects have been exaggerated and the objects of interest are converted. After that, the intensity valleys have been detected and the watershed segmentation have been conducted. Through this process, the objects in an image are divided into separate objects. Finally, the effectiveness of the watershed segmentation approach for high-resolution imagery has been summarized. The approach to solve the problems such as over-segmentation has been proposed.

Object-based segmentation is the first essential step for image processing applications. Recently, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) segmentation techniques have been developed, however not enough to preserve the significant information contained in the small regions of the images. The proposed method is to partition an SAR image into homogeneous regions by using a fuzzy hit-or-miss operator with an inherent spatial transformation, which endows to preserve the small regions. In our algorithm, an iterative segmentation technique is formulated as a consequential process. Then, each time in iterating, hypothesis testing is used to evaluate the quality of the segmented regions with a homogeneity index. The segmentation algorithm is unsupervised and employed few parameters, most of which can be calculated from the input data. This comparative study indicates that the new iterative segmentation algorithm provides acceptable results as seen in the tested examples of satellite images.

Images with high resolution are desired and often required in many visual applications. When resolution can not be improved by replacing sensors, either because of cost or hardware physical limits, super resolution image reconstruction method is what can be resorted to. Super resolution image reconstruction method refers to image processing algorithms that produce high quality and high resolution images from a set of low quality and low resolution images. The method is proved to be useful in many practical cases where multiple frames of the same scene can be obtained, including satellite imaging, video surveillance, video enhancement and restoration, digital mosaicking, and medical imaging. The method can be either the frequency domain approach or the spatial domain approach. Much of the earlier works concentrated on the frequency domain formulation, but as more general degradation models were considered, later researches had been almost exclusively on spatial domain formulations. The method in spatial domains has three stages: i) motion estimate or image registration, ii) interpolation onto high resolution grid and iii) deblurring process. The super resolution grid construction in the second stage was discussed in this paper. We applied the Maximum A­Posteriori(MAP) reconstruction method that is one of the major methods in the super resolution grid construction. Based on this method, we reconstructed high resolution images from a set of low resolution images and compared the results with those from other known interpolation methods.

This paper proposed the method of creating image mosaic in automated fashion. It is well known that geometric and radiometric balance in adjacent images should be maintained in mosaicking process. The seam line to minimize geometric discontinuity was extracted using Minimum Absolute­Gray-Difference Sum considering constraint condition in search width. To maintain the radiometric balance of images acquired at different time, we utilized Match Cumulative Frequency, Match Mean and Standard Deviation and Hue Adjustment algorithm. The mosaicked image prepared by the proposed method was compared with those of commercial software. Experiments show that seam lines were extracted significantly well from roads, rivers. ridgelines etc. and Match Cumulative Frequency algorithm was performed pretty good in histogram matching

High-resolution satellite images offer abundance information of the earth surface for remote sensing applications. The information includes geometry, texture and attribute characteristic. The pixel-based image classification can't satisfy high-resolution satellite image's classification precision and produce large data redundancy. Object-oriented information extraction not only depends on spectrum character, but also use geometry and structure information. It can provide an accessible and truly revolutionary approach. Using Beijing Spot 5 high-resolution image and object-oriented classification with the eCognition software, we accomplish the cultures' precise classification. The test areas have five culture types including water, vegetation, road, building and bare lands. We use nearest neighbor classification and appraise the overall classification accuracy. The average of five species reaches 0.90. All of maximum is 1. The standard deviation is less than 0.11. The overall accuracy can reach $95.47\%.$ This method offers a new technology for high-resolution satellite images' available applications in remote sensing culture classification.

In this paper, we describe reconstructed 3D-urban modeling techniques for laser scanner and CCD camera system, which are loading on the vehicle. We use two laser scanners, the one is horizon scanner and the other is vertical scanner. Horizon scanner acquires the horizon data of building for localization. Vertical scan data are main information for constructing a building. We compared extraction of edge aerial image with laser scan data. This method is able to correct the cumulative error of self-localization. Then we remove obstacles of 3D-reconstructed building. Real-texture information that is acquired with CCD camera is mapped by 3D-depth information. 3D building of urban is reconstructed to 3D-virtual world. These techniques apply to city plan. 3D-environment game. movie background. unmanned-patrol etc.

Building information plays a key role in diverse applications such as urban planning, telecommunication and environment monitoring. Automatic building extraction has been a prime interest in the field of GIS and photogrammetry. In this paper, we presented an automatic approach for building extraction from lidar data. The proposed approach is divided into four processes: pre-processing, filtering, segmentation and building extraction. Experimental results showed that the proposed method detected most of buildings with less commission and omission errors.

The extraction of 'end-pixels' (i.e. end-members) aims to quantify the abundance of different materials in a single pixel, which becomes popular in the subpixel analysis for hyperspectral dataset. In this paper, we present a new concept called 'End-Pixel of Features (EPF)' to extends the concept of end-pixels for multispectral data and even panchromatic data. The algorithm combines the advantages of previous simplex and clustering methods to search the EPFs in the feature space and reduce the effects of noise. Some experimental results show that, the proposed methodology can be successfully used to hyperspectral data and other remote sensing data.

The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is famous for its large tidal range (up to 9 m) and vast tidal flats. With comparison the sedimentary environments of open and close tidal flat using remote sensing, we select Kanghwa tidal flat and Hwang-Do tidal flat in Cheonsu Bay. Prior to surface sediment discrimination using remote sensing, sedimentary environments including intertidal OEM, hydraulic condition, and relationship between grain size and various tidal condition are investigated. Remote sensing has the potential to provide synoptic information of intertidal environments. The objectives of this study are: (i) to generate an intertidal digital elevation model (OEM) using the waterline method of Lansat TM/ETM+, (ii) to investigate the tidal channel distribution using texture analysis, and (iii) to analyze the relationship between surface grain size by using in-situ data and intertidal OEM and tidal channel density by using high-resolution satellite data such as IKONOS and Kompsat EOC. The results demonstrate that satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective tool for a surface sediment discrimination and long term morphologic change estimation in tidal flats.

Two different sensors (here, KOMPSAT and RADARSAT) are considered for ship detection, and are used to delineate the detection performance for their data. The experiments are set for coastal regions of Mokpo Port and Ulsan Port and field experiments on board pilot boat are conducted to collect in situ ship validation information such as ship type and length. This paper introduce mainly the experiment result of ship detection by both RADARSAT SAR imagery and landbased RADAR data, operated by the local Authority of South Korea, so called vessel traffic system (VTS) radar. Fine imagery of Ulsan Port was acquired on June 19, 2004 and in-situ data such as wind speed and direction, taking pictures of ships and natural features were obtained aboard a pilot ship. North winds, with a maximum speed of 3.1 m/s were recorded. Ship's position, size and shape and natural features of breakwaters, oil pipeline and alongside ship were compared using SAR and VTS. It is shown that KOMPSAT/EOC has a good performance in the detection of a moving ship at a speed of 7 kts or more an hour that ship and its wake can be imaged. The detection capability of RADARSAT doesn't matter how fast ship is running and depends on a ship itself, e.g. its material, length and type. Our results indicate that SAR can be applicable to automated ship detection for a VTS and SAR combination service.

In this study the micro landform of tide flat in west Seohan bay. North Korea was classified and the change of this environment was detected by using Landsat TM. FTM+, KOMPAST. For this. ISODATA method of the unsupervised methods was used to classify the micro landform while tasseled cap method was used to detect the change of environment in west Seohan bay, North Korea by passing years. This study shows the possibility that the topography analysis and change especially in unapproachable area could be detected and monitored by using satellite images.

The growth rate of atmospheric $CO_2$ undergoes significant interannual variability, largely due to temporal variability of partitioning of $CO_2$ between terrestrial biosphere and ocean. In the present paper, as a follow-up to the work by Lee et al. [1], we estimated the year-to-year variability in net global air-sea $CO_2$ fluxes between 1982 and 2003 from observed changes in wind speed and estimated changes in ${\Delta}pCO_2$ Changes in $pCO_{25W}$ were inferred from global records of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies and seasonally varying SST dependence of $pCO_{25W}$. The modeled interannual variability of $\pm0.2\;Pg\;C\;yr^{-1}\;(1{\sigma})$ from the present work is significantly smaller than the values deduced from atmospheric observations of $^{1.3}CO_2/CO_2$ in conjunction with different atmospheric transport models, but it is closer to the recent estimates inferred from a 3-D ocean biogeochemical model and atmospheric transport models constrained with extensive observations of atmospheric $CO_2$.

The KOMPSAT European Cooperation aims at enhancing existing and establishing new collaborations between KARI and various European institutions. The objective is to create mutual data and information exchange possibilities and to develop new data applications of available and future space based Earth Observation sensors. In this paper, the concept of a KOMPSAT regional application center, a joint development between KARI, ARCS and other European partners is presented. This includes the establishment of an additional KOMPSAT-2 downlink in Europe, and the developments of a state-of-the-art user service system for urban and environmental security monitoring.

KOMPSAT-2, to be launched in 2005, will be a long awaited addition to the existing high-resolution satellite sensors. The use of download facilities in Europe will greatly increase its capacity without loosing any coverage over Korea. In this paper the concept for an Urban Application Center is presented. It is part of the proposed Regional Application Center which is dedicated to archiving and distributing KOMPSAT-2 images. The Urban Application Center will offer services derived from KOMPSAT-2. Its aim is to promote the use of KOMPSAT-2 data and increase the general awareness and acceptance of satellite data.

The authors' previous study found an interannual covariability between actual evapotranspiration (ET) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) over northern Asia. This result suggested that vegetation controls interannual variation in ET. In this prior study, NDVI data from the Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) dataset were analyzed. However, studies of NDVI interannual change are subject to uncertainty, because NDVI data often contain errors associated with sensor- and atmosphere-related effects. This study is aimed toward reducing this uncertainty by employing NDVI dataset, from the Global Inventory Monitoring and Modeling Studies (GIMMS) group, in addition to PAL. The analysis was carried out for the northern Asia region from 1982 to 2000. 19-year interannual change in PAL-NDVI and GIMMS-NDVI were both compared with interannual change in model-assimilated ET. Although the correlation coefficient between GIMMS-NDVI and ET is slightly less than for PAL-NDVI and ET, for both NDVI datasets the annual maximum correlation with ET occurs in June, which is near the central period of the growing season. A significant positive correlation between GIMMS-NDVI and ET was observed over most of the vegetated land area in June as well as PAL-NDVI and ET. These results reinforce the authors' prior research that indicates the control of interannual change in ET is dominated by interannual change in vegetation activity.

NDVI has been used to estimate several ecological variables including leaf area index (LAI). Global MODIS LAI data are partially produced by empirical model that is based on the assumption of high correlation between NDVI and LAI. This study attempts to evaluate the MODIS empirical model by comparing with the result obtained from field LAI measurement and Landsat ETM+ reflectance. MODIS LAI product and ancillary data were analyzed over a small forest watershed near the Seoul metropolitan area. The relationship between NDVI of ETM+ and field measured LAI did not correspond to MODIS LAI estimation. Since the study area is mostly covered by very dense and fully closed forest, the correlation between NDVI and LAI might not be high. Although MODIS LAI product has great potential for global environment studies, it needs to be cautious to use them in regional and local area in particular for the forest of dense canopy situation.

When the data from the artificial satellite is analyzed, recent years it is perceived to vegetation index using BRF(Bi-directional Reflectance Factor) of the observation target. To make the BRF models, it is important to measure the 3D structure of the observation target actually. In this study, it is proposed to the observation technique by using multi-angle stereo pair image, and shown the observation result in grassland area. Also, our team has been operating the radio controlled helicopter which can fly over the tall forest canopy and it can be equipped the measurement system.

Differential interferometric phases from JERS-1 L­band data sets show spatial variation of path-length ranging from a few mm to several cm. The variation may be caused by changes in soil moisture contents, i.e. variation of penetration depth and the swelling of soils. Although the amount of total effect caused by soil moisture is not measurable, it is clear that the soil moisture according to precipitation is another factor to be considered in DInSAR analysis. We also discuss DInSAR characteristics in a rice paddy according to irrigation conditions, and discrimination of hydrological features such as stream channels and watershed boundaries by applying DInSAR technique.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is an US-Japan joint space mission to observe tropical and subtropical rainfall. This satellite is equipped with the world's first precipitation radar that operates at 13.8 GHz. We introduce the TRMM precipitation radar (PR) system, along with the PR data processing and analysis algorithms, and some observation results obtained by the TRMM PR. It is concluded that the TRMM PR can give quite useful rainfall data for the understanding of global climate changes, meteorology, climatology, atmospheric science, and also for the studies of satellite communication.

Atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone $(O_3)$ play the important trace gases in tropospheric chemistry, through its concentration in the troposphere directly influences the concentrations of tropospheric hydroxyl (OH). Understanding the impact of CO and $O_3$ on the global tropospheric chemistry requires measurements of the global atmospheric CO and $O_3$ distributions. This study focuses on the identification of CO and O3 released in the East Asia between March 2000 and February 2004. During the period, the MOPITT instrument onboard the Earth Observing System (EOS)-Terra platform collected extensive measurement of CO. So we have used MOPITT data at 700hPa to analyze seasonal distribution of CO concentration. And the O3 measurements for this study were Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and Dobson spectrometer provided NASA/GSFC and Yonsei University, Korea. During springtime, the CO and O3 concentrations were increased over East Asia for April, May, and June. CO and O3 transport and chemistry in the springtime in East Asia are studied by use of the HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model.

Three HF ocean radar stations were installed at the Soya Strait in the Sea of Okhotsk in order to monitor the Soya Warm Current. Frequency of the HF radar is 13.9 MHz, and range and azimuth resolutions are 3 km and 5 deg., respectively. Surface current velocity observed by the radars shows good agreement with drifting buoy and shipboard ADCP observations. The velocity of Soya Warm Current reaches its maximum, which is about 1 m/s, in summer, and becomes weak in winter. The surface transport across the strait shows a significant correlation with the sea level difference along the strait.

Appearance and disappearance of the China Coastal Waters(CCW) in the neighbouring sea of Cheju Island was very different yearly but usually appeared strongly in summer. At this time, sea level and salinity were varied in this area by the influence of the CCW. Satellite data(T/P;Topex/Poseidon) and Salinity (NFRID;National Fisheries Research and Development Institute) were used from 1993 to 2001. We compared with TG data of NOR I and TIP data in the observed station(33 31'N, 12632'E). Coefficient of correlation was 0.6~0.8 with the exception of 1993 and 1995. And variations of salinity was higher than $32.00\%_{\circ}$ in the southwestern part of Cheju Island and the southern part of the South Sea of Korea during June-October and SLA(Sea level Anomaly) was 10-11cm. Salinity of the southeastern part was higher than those of the southwestern part and SLA was 12~13cm because of the influence of Tsushima Current.

Products of gridded surface wind and windstress vectors over the world ocean have been constructed by satellite scatterometer data with highly temporal and spatial resolutions. Even if the ADEOS-II/SeaWinds has supplied surface wind data only for short duration in Apr. to Oct. 2003 to us, it permits us to construct a product with higher resolution together with the Qscat/SeaWinds. In addition to our basic product with its resolution of $1^{\circ}\times1^{\circ}$ in space and daily in time, we try to construct products with $1/2^{\circ}\times1/2^{\circ}$ and semi- and quarter-daily resolution. These products are validated by inter-comparison with in-situ data (TAO and NDBC buoys), and also compared with numerical weather prediction(NWP) ones (NCEP reanalysis). Result reveals that our product has higher reliability in the study area than the NCEP's. For the open ocean regions in the middle and high latitudes where there are no in-situ data, we find that there are clear differences between them. Especially in the southern westerly region of 400-600S, the' wind-stress magnitudes by the NCEP are significantly larger than the others, suggesting that they are overestimated. We also calculate wind-stress curl field that is an important factor for ocean dynamics and focus its spatial character in the northwestern Pacific around Japan. Positive curl areas are found to cover from southwest to northeast in our focus region and almost correspond to the Kuroshio path. It is suggested that the vorticity field in the lower atmosphere is related to the upper oceanic one, and thus an aspect of air-sea interaction process.

The purpose of this study is to examine the image­based atmospheric correction models using the data from Landsat Enhanced Thermal Mapper Plus (ETM+) that have quite similar spectral characteristics to the forthcoming Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT)-2 Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC), and the in-situ measured surface reflectance data during satellite overflight. The main advantage of this type of correction is that it does not require in-situ measurements during each satellite overflight. While substantial differences are present between Top-Of-the Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and in-situ measurements, the results showed that Case 1 based on COST model gives most accurate results among three cases. The accuracy of Case 2 is very close to Case 1 and its values are smaller than in-situ data. No notable features appear between some bands in the Case 3 and in-situ data. It is expected from this study that if the current methods are applied to the IKONOS high resolution data, we will be able to develop the suitable atmospheric correction methods for MSC data.

We present here, some of the studies carried for estimation of rainfall over land and oceanic regions in and around South Korea. We use active and passive microwave measurements from TRMM - TMI and Precipitation Radar (PR) respectively during a typhoon even named - RUSA that took place during 30 Aug. 2002. We have followed due approach by Yao at. all (2002) and examined the performance of their algorithm using two main predictor variable, named as Scattering Index (SI) and Polarization Corrected Brightness Temperature (PCT) while using TMI data. The rainfall rate estimated using PCT and SI shows some under-estimation as compared to the AWS rainfall products from the PR in common area of overlap. A larger database thus would be used in future. To establish a new rain rate algorithm over Korean region based on the present case study.

The simple method of the geometric reconstruction of satellite linear pushbroom images is investigated. The model of the sensor used is based on the SPOT model that is developed by Kraiky. The satellite trajectory is a Keplerian trajectory in the approximation. Four orbital parameters, longitude of the ascending $node(\omega),$ inclination of the orbit plan(I), latitude argument of the satellite(W) and distance between earth center and satellite, are used for the camera modeling. We suppose that four orbital parameters and satellite attitude angles are exactly acquired. Then, in order to refine model, the given attitude angles and orbital parameters is not changed, but time-independent four parameters associated with LOS(Line Of Sight) vector is updated. A pair of SPOT-5 images has been used for validation of proposed method. Two GCPs acquired by GPS survey is used to controlling the LOS vector. The results are that the RMSE of 16 checking points are about 4.5m. Because the ground resolution of SPOT-5 is 2.5m, the result obtained in this study has a good accuracy. It demonstrates that the sensor model developed by this study can be used to reconstruct the geometry of satellite image taken by pushbroom camera.

Landmark matching is one of an important algorithm for navigation of satellite images. This paper proposes a fast landmark matching algorithm using a MGLI (Moving Guide-Line Image). For searching the matched point between the landmark chip and a part of image, correlation matrix is used generally, but the full-sized correlation matrix has a drawback requiring plenty of time for matching point calculation. MGLI includes thick lines for fast calculation of correlation matrix. In the MGLI, width of the thick lines should be determined by satellite position changes and navigation error range. For the fast landmark matching, the MGLI provides guided line for a landmark chip we want to match, so that the proposed method should reduce candidate areas for correlation matrix calculation. This paper will show how much time is reduced in the proposed fast landmark matching algorithm compared to general ones.

GOES-9 has been operated with the status of the Image Motion Compensation(IMC) off since last October. As the IMC function turned off, the sub-satellite point(SSP) of GVAR data was changed with the effect of the satellite motions. This makes the image registration, to maintain pixels within an image and between successive images to their earth-referenced information, not to be possible any more. In the paper, we introduce the method to accomplish image registration and the result of the SSP observation with the status of IMC off.

In this study, the concept and techniques to generate the level lA, lB and 2A image products have been reviewed. In particular, radiometric and geometric corrections and bands registration used to generate level lA, lB and 2A products have been focused in this study. Radiometric correction is performed to take into account radiometric gain and offset calculated by compensating the detector response non-uniformity. And, in order to compensate satellite altitude, attitude, skew effects, earth rotation and earth curvature, some geometric parameters for geometric corrections are computed and applied. Bands registration process using the matching function between a geometry, which is called 'reference geometry', and another one which is corresponds to the image to be registered is applied to images in case of multi-spectral imaging mode. In order to generate level-lA image products, a simple radiometric processing is applied to a level-0 image. Level-lB image has the same radiometry correction as a level-lA image, but is also issued from some geometric corrections in order to compensate skew effects, Earth rotation effects and spectral misregistration. Level-2A image is generated using some geo-referencing parameters computed by ephemeris data, orbit attitudes and sensor angles. Level lA image is tested by visual analysis. The difference between distances calculated level 1 B image and distances of real coordinate is tested. Level 2A image is tested Using checking points.

Automatic image registration is an essential element of remote sensing because remote sensing system generates enormous amount of data, which are multiple observations of the same features at different times and by different sensor. The general process of automatic image registration includes three steps: 1) The extraction of features to be used in the matching process, 2) the feature matching strategy and accurate matching process, 3) the resampling of the data based on the correspondence computed from matched feature. For step 2) and 3), we have developed an algorithms for automated registration of satellite images with RANSAC(Random Sample Consensus) in success. However, for step 1), There still remains human operation to generate GCP Chips, which is time consuming, laborious and expensive process. The main idea of this research is that we are able to automatically generate GCP chips with comer detection algorithms without GPS survey and human interventions if we have systematic corrected satellite image within adaptable positional accuracy. In this research, we use SUSAN(Smallest Univalue Segment Assimilating Nucleus) algorithm in order to detect the comer. SUSAN algorithm is known as the best robust algorithms for comer detection in the field of compute vision. However, there are so many comers in high-resolution images so that we need to reduce the comer points from SUSAN algorithms to overcome redundancy. In experiment, we automatically generate GCP chips from IKONOS images with geo level using SUSAN algorithms. Then we extract reference coordinate from IKONOS images and DEM data and filter the comer points using texture analysis. At last, we apply automatically collected GCP chips by proposed method and the GCP by operator to in-house automatic precision correction algorithms. The compared result will be presented to show the GCP quality.

From 1980's, the DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) is applied to the data/image processing. Many people use the DWT in remote sensing for diversity purposes and they are satisfied with the wavelet theory. Though the algorithm for wavelet is very diverse, many people use the standard wavelet such as Daubechies D4 wavelet and biorthogonal 9/7 wavelet. We will overview the wavelet theory for discrete form which can be applied to the image processing. First, we will introduce the basic DWT algorithm and review the wavelet algorithm: EZW (Embedded Zerotree Wavelet), SPIHT(Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees), Lifting scheme, Curvelet, etc. Finally, we will suggest the properties of wavelet algorithm; and wavelet filter for each image processing in remote sensing.

This paper developed a web service system providing hydrographic information encoded by GML rules. In order to achieve the goal, every data included in an ENC, which is following the rules of the S-57 and S-52 from the IHO, is transformed into a data structure form of OLE/COM from the OOC. In the system, hydrographic information can be provided through a data provider, and then it can be encoded into GML format for web services. This paper also implemented a web client that requests hydrographic information to the server and renders result data which is a GML format following the rules of S-57.

In this study, we analyzed the accuracy of the conversion from DLT parameters to physical camera parameters and optimized the use of DLT model for non-metric cameras in photogrammetric tasks. Using the simulated data, we computed two sets of physical camera parameters from DLT parameters and Bundle adjustment for various cases. Comparing two results based on the RMSE values of check points, we optimized the arrangement of GCPs for DLT.

In this study, the digital image processing with image enhancement based on homomorphic filtering was performed using geophysical imaging data such as gravity, magnetic data and sub-scenes of satellite images such as LANDSAT, IKONOS, and KOMPSAT. Windows application program for executing homomorphic filtering was designed and newly implemented. In general, homomorphic filtering is technique that is based on Fourier transform, which enhances the contrast of image by removing the low frequencies and amplifying the high frequencies in frequency domain. We can enhance the image selectively using homomorphic filtering as compared with the existing method, which enhance the image totally. Through several experiment using remotely sensed imagery and geophysical image with this program, it is concluded that homomorphic filtering is more effective to reveal distinct characteristics for some complicated and multi-associated features on image data.

In this paper, we design and implement an integrated management system for geographic data and vehicular images using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Integrated management of geographic data and vehicular images is very important to manage and to provide them to users effectively because of a large volume of vehicular images. To manipulate these data together, we consider a vehicular image as a polygon which is a type of popular geographic data types. The polygon represents a region in which spatial objects appear the vehicular image.

In this paper, we propose a framework for synchronization of spatial data between mobile devices and a server by using SyncML(Synchronization Markup Language) that is standard specification for synchronization protocol. We used GML (Geographic Markup Language) to support interoperability of spatial data between various data sources. We also used metadata and catalog service to access and integrate distributed spatial data, considering relationships of spatial data and non-spatial data.

The automatic determination of vehicle operation status as well as continuous tracking of vehicle location with intelligent management is one of major elements to achieve the goals. Especially, vehicle operation status can only be analyzed in terms of expert experiences with real-time location data with scheduling information. However the scheduling information of individual vehicle is very difficult to be interpreted immediately because there are hundreds of thousand vehicles are run at the same time in the national wide range workplace. In this paper, we propose the location-based knowledge management system(LKMs) using the active trajectory analysis method with routing and scheduling information to cope with the problems. This system uses an inference technology with dispatching and geographic information to generate the logistics knowledge that can be furnished to the manager in the central vehicle monitoring and controlling center.

The mining-related damages such as ground subsidence, acid mine drainage(AMD), and deforestation in the abandoned underground coal mine areas become an object of public concern. Therefore, the system to manage the miningrelated damages is needed for the effective drive of rehabilitation activities. The management system for Abandoned Underground Coal Mine using GIS includes the database about mining record and information associated with the mining-related damages and application programs to support mine damage prevention business. Also, this system would support decision-making policy for rehabilitation and provide basic geological data for regional construction works in abandoned underground coal mine areas.

Recently, Location-based services(LBS) allow consumers to receive services based on their geographic location data. Users want to take services based location information with portable devices. And Point of Interest(POI) information's usage is increasing with mobile device's development and user's interest. And this paper shows that we connect the multimedia POI database(DB), provide the multimedia services through the portable devices and search POI using location and direction information. The multimedia POI is consisted of sound, image, moving image and animation with location information. When we search POI, we find POI in DB using the area zone and direction information.[l]

Spatial database system provides many query types and most of them are required frequent disk I/O and much CPU time. k-NN search is to find k-th closest object from the query point and up to now, several k-NN search methods have been proposed. Among these, MINMAX distance method has an aim not to visit unnecessary node by applying pruning technique. But this method access more disk than necessary while pruning unnecessary node. In this paper, we propose new k-NN search algorithm based on density of object. With this method, we predict the radius to be expected to contain k-NN object using density of data set and search those objects within this radius and then adjust radius if failed. Experimental results show that this method outperforms the previous MINMAX distance method. This algorithm visit fewer disks than MINMAX method by the factor of maximum $22\%\;and\;average\;6\%.$

In identifying flood vulnerable areas, three methods are generally deployed: the geomorphology method which is based on topographic features; the past evidence method based on observed data of past actual floods; and, prediction of flood areas through hydrologic models. This study aims to improve the prediction model of the geomorphology method through the application of fuzzy method in GIS modeling. The generally used GIS method of superimposing thematic map layers assumes crisp boundaries of the layers, which results in either risk-averse solutions or risk-taking solutions. The introduction of fuzzy concepts to processing of evaluation criteria (DEM, slope, aspect) solves this problem. As the result of applying the fuzzy method to a test site in the west Nak-Dong river, similar flood vulnerable areas were predicted as when using the conventional Boolean criteria. The resulting map, however, showed varying degree of uncertainty of flooding in these areas. This extra information is deemed to be valuable in taking phased actions during flood response, leading to a more effective and timely decision-making.

Today, the vehicle is used the mean of transportation as well as the mobile office with the third digital life space. So telematics is an emerging industry that has tremendous future potential. It is necessary the essential contents for telematics services : navigation map for navigation, POI, real-time traffic information etc. In this paper, we proposed the telematics contents server to manage the telematics contents with efficient performance in distributed environment. The telematics contents server transforms and stores the essential contents and provide it to user through standard interface. The telematics contents server is middleware to offer a rapid essential telematics contents management, client connectivity, and communications. It is useful for the telematics service provider to build telematics system under distributed environment.

Recently, the services using position information of moving objects is embossed. Theses services needs the moving objects databases to manage moving object data with efficiency. To build the moving object databases, we must develop the moving object engine to mange, store, and search the spatio temporal data of moving object. The moving object engine has to support query syntax to search data that suitable for user need like LBS, Telematics, ITS, vehicle management system. In this paper, we design and implement the moving object engine to support service with moving object data. The moving object engine is able to support system environment that users are able to get the moving object data easily even they don't know complex data structure.

The location-based service is one of the most powerful services in the mobile area. The location-based service provides information service for moving user's location information and information service using wire / wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a model for personalized recommendation system which includes location information and personalized recommendation system for location-based service. For this service system, we consider mobile clients that have a limited resource and low bandwidth. Because it is difficult to input the words at mobile device, we must deliberate it when we design the interface of system. We design and implement the personalized recommendation system for location-based services(advertisement, discount news, and event information) that support user's needs and location information. As a result, it can be used to design the other location-based service systems related to user's location information in mobile environment. In this case, we need to establish formal definition of moving objects and their temporal pattern.

According as IT environment changes from client/server system to the open system based on web service technologies, the exchange of data and services between independent applications and service servers in web environment is observed Recently. In this points, it is necessary that Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Imagery Information Systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems based on the location and geometry information are inter-related each other. But, the inter-relation of these systems is very difficult because of the closed system architecture, different information format, and the absence of interoperability technologies. In this Paper, we describe 4S integration system based web service technologies that accept the international standard as WFS, WCS, WRS of OGC (OpenGIS Consortium) and UDDI, SOAP, WSDL of W3C. In detail, we study the system architecture design and implementation of traffic information service, routing service, and tracing service. These services are consisting of the data schema based on XML and GML, various functions of each layered service, each server platform, and web server. Specially, we represent that GML is being applied to a wide range of location-based services, telematics, and intelligent transportation

This paper refers and implements XML Web services, which supports networked interchanges of moving object information. XML Web services are expected to be fundamental building blocks in the move to distributed computing on the Internet. As an interchange format, GML encodes semantics, syntax, and schema of geospatial and geoprocessing-related information resources. It can give great benefits to utilize raw data easily as an XML encoding format does. This paper proposes a full coverage of interoperable location trajectory services consisting of 3 independent modules: a moving object database, a data processing server, and a web services interface module. For communications, SOAP protocols and WSDL documents are used, which can guarantee an interoperability of a system regardless of different platforms and service channels. This paper also designs a GML data format that represents location information of probe cars.

In the moving object database system, spatiotemporal join is very import operation when we process join moving objects. Processing time of spatio-temporal join operation increases by geometric progression with numbers of moving objects. Therefore efficient methods of spatio-temporal join is essential to moving object database system. In this paper, we propose spatio-temporal join algorithm with TB-Tree that preserves trajectories of moving objects, and show result of test. We first present basic algorithm, and propose cpu-time tunning algorithm and IO-time tunning algorithm. We show result of test with data set created by moving object generator tool.

The aim of this study was to cross-validate a spatial probabilistic model of landslide likelihood ratios at Boun, Janghung and Yongin, in Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations within the study areas were identified by interpreting aerial photographs, satellite images and field surveys. Maps of the topography, soil type, forest cover, lineaments and land cover were constructed from the spatial data sets. The 14 factors that influence landslide occurrence were extracted from the database and the likelihood ratio of each factor was computed. 'Landslide susceptibility maps were drawn for these three areas using likelihood ratios derived not only from the data for that area but also using the likelihood ratios calculated from each of the other two areas (nine maps in all) as a cross-check of the validity of the method For validation and cross-validation, the results of the analyses were compared, in each study area, with actual landslide locations. The validation and cross-validation of the results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing landslide locations.

The purpose of this study was to develop landslide susceptibility analysis techniques using artificial neural networks and then to apply these to the selected study area of Janghung in Korea. We aimed to verify the effect of data selection on training sites. Landslide locations were identified from interpretation of satellite images and field survey data, and a spatial database of the topography, soil, forest, and land use was constructed. Thirteen landslide-related factors were extracted from the spatial database. Using these factors, landslide susceptibility was analyzed using an artificial neural network. The weights of each factor were determined by the back-propagation training method. Five different training datasets were applied to analyze and verify the effect of training. Then, the landslide susceptibility indices were calculated using the trained back-propagation weights and susceptibility maps were constructed from Geographic Information System (GIS) data for the five cases. The results of the landslide susceptibility maps were verified and compared using landslide location data. GIS data were used to efficiently analyze the large volume of data, and the artificial neural network proved to be an effective tool to analyze landslide susceptibility.

The aim of this study is to cross-validate of spatial probability model, artificial neural network at Boun, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations were identified in the Boun, Janghung and Youngin areas from interpretation of aerial photographs, field surveys, and maps of the topography, soil type, forest cover and land use were constructed to spatial data-sets. The factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect and curvature of topography, were calculated from the topographic database. Topographic type, texture, material, drainage and effective soil thickness were extracted from the soil database, and type, diameter, age and density of forest were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the Landsat TM image satellite image. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using the landslide­occurrence factors by artificial neural network model. For the validation and cross-validation, the result of the analysis was applied to each study areas. The validation and cross-validate results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing data on landslide locations.

The aim of this study is to apply and crossvalidate a spatial logistic multiple-regression model at Boun, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations in the Boun area were identified by interpretation of aerial photographs and field surveys. Maps of the topography, soil type, forest cover, geology, and land-use were constructed from a spatial database. The factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect, and curvature of topography, were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage, and effective soil thickness were extracted from the soil database, and type, diameter, and density of forest were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database and land-use was classified from the Landsat TM image satellite image. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using landslide-occurrence factors by logistic multiple-regression methods. For validation and cross-validation, the result of the analysis was applied both to the study area, Boun, and another area, Youngin, Korea. The validation and cross-validation results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing data with respect to landslide locations. The GIS was used to analyze the vast amount of data efficiently, and statistical programs were used to maintain specificity and accuracy.

The susceptibility of landslides and the effect of landslide-related factors at Penang in Malaysia using the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing data have been evaluated. Landslide locations were identified in the study area from interpretation of aerial photographs and from field surveys. Topographical and geological data and satellite images were collected, processed, and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and image processing. The factors chosen that influence landslide occurrence were: topographic slope, topographic aspect, topographic curvature and distance from drainage, all from the topographic database; lithology and distance from lineament, taken from the geologic database; land use from Landsat TM (Thermatic Mapper) satellite images; and the vegetation index value from SPOT HRV (High Resolution Visible) satellite images. Landslide hazardous areas were analysed and mapped using the landslide-occurrence factors employing the probability-frequency ratio method. To assess the effect of these factors, each factor was excluded from the analysis, and its effect verified using the landslide location data. As a result, land 'cover had relatively positive effects, and lithology had relatively negative effects on the landslide susceptibility maps in the study area. In addition, the landslide susceptibility maps using the all factors showed the relatively good results.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility from landslides in the Lai Chau region of Vietnam, using Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing data, focusing on the relationship between tectonic fractures and landslides. Landslide locations were identified from an interpretation of aerial photographs and field surveys. Topographic and geological data and satellite images were collected, processed, and constructed into a spatial database using GIS data and image processing techniques, and a scheme of the tectonic fracturing of the crust in the Lai Chau region was established. In this scheme, Lai Chau was identified as a region with low crustal fractures, with the grade of tectonic fracture having a close relationship with landslide occurrence. The factors found to influence landslide occurrence were: topographic slope, topographic aspect, topographic curvature, distance from drainage, lithology, distance from a tectonic fracture and land cover. Landslide prone areas were analyzed and mapped using the landslide occurrence factors employing the probability-likelihood ratio method. The results of the analysis were verified using landslide location data, and these showed a satisfactory agreement between the hazard map and existing landslide location data.

The damage scale and damage area in the coast have been increased dramatically because of calamities such as typhoon. tidal wave. flood and storm. Especially. 409 cases. which reach to about $40.9\%$ of natural disasters of 1,000 cases for the recent 15 years have happened on coast area. More than $40\%$ of natural disasters also occurred every year is happening in coastland. Therefore, there is a great need to construct all related GIS database such as atmospheric phenomena (typhoon. tidal wave, flood and storm). harbor facility, harbor traffic and ebb and flow. Furthermore. the certain system should be developed and integrated with NDMS (National Disaster Management System) by using 3D web GIS technology. In this study. the coast disaster area management system was designed and developed by using 3D web GIS technique so that the coast disaster area could be monitored and managed in real time and in visual. Finally. the future disaster in coast area could be predicted scientifically.

Recently the domestic technologies to manage forest and to control all related information were developed very rapidly by integrating FGIS (Forest Geographic Information System) and IT (Information technology). However, there still exists a mapping problem for example when overlaying a topography maps scaled in 1/5,000 to a forest type map scaled in 1/25.000. Moreover, there is a greater need to introduce the advanced spatial technologies such as high-resolution satellite image such as IKONOS and GIS to forest. In this study, 3D high-resolution forest mapping system was developed to possibly overlay with all kinds of scale maps and provide the all detailed information by using high-resolution satellite image and GIS. Through this system, all related forest officials could have and maintain the data consistency for their job and share the standard forest database with other post.

This research work is concerned with a location-based alert service in wireless communication network environment. The alert service automatically transfers alert message to subscriber in the disaster area. This research work deals with automatic alert services that automatically provide people in emergency area with the state of emergency. The alert service uses the mobile device to inform its urgency to the subscribers in its area. The location tracking service will give the list of people in emergency area. The all processes of this research work are followed as. First, when a disaster or a calamity comes in, an emergency management center receives the emergency to analyze its shape and size and to declare the place to 'the disaster area.' Secondly, then the center finds information of mobile device subscribers in the disaster area. Finally, the center automatically generates a shape of text or audio of alert message of the emergency to send the message to the subscribers in the disaster area. Our mobile automatic alert service proposed above is so efficient that the subscribers in disasters area may meet the emergency more efficiently and may save their own valuable lives and properties more safely.

This study is focused to analyze the movement of thermal effluent dischargeed from nuclear power plant by season, ebb and flow, and before and after foundation of tide embankment using thermal infrared band image of 28 scenes observed from Landsat from 1987 to 2004, which is the early stage of operation of young-kwang nuclear power plant. In diffusion of thermal effluent discharge by seasons, spring and summer is spreading further than autumn and winter. It is considered to distribute widely mixed with thermal effluent discharge and hot water, which is distributed naturally along the seaside. It is known the fact that tidal currents control the direction of diffusion of thermal effluent discharge by the change of ebb and flow. Namely, it is distributed widely on the Southwest direction along the seaside by tidal currents when ebb and, it is moved widely on the Northeast direction along the seaside by tidal current when flood. However, in the early stage of flood current, the mainstream of thermal effluent discharge is spread on Southwest direction and, the direction is changed on North­east way when the latter period of flood current. Similarly, in the early stage of ebb current, the mainstream of thermal effluent discharge is spread on Northeast direction and, the direction is changed on Southwest direction when the latter period of ebb current. As the result of comparing to the diffusion pattern of thermal effluent discharge before and after the foundation of seawall, discharged thermal effluent from the drain of plant by the foundation of dike is shown as curved circle pattern on Northeast to West direction from the ending portion of the seawall.

Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) has been developed by Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) since 2003. Ocean Color Imager (OCI) is the one of COMS payloads, which will monitor the marine environment around Korean peninsula routinely with the intermediate resolution. But considering COMS is to be located in the geostationary orbit, required geographical coverage is not positioned in the nadir direction of COMS but in specific location with horizontal and vertical offsets from the nadir. In this study, coverage by OCI Field Of View (FOV) is analyzed. First of all, OCI is modeled as the sensor which is a $2,500{\times}2,500$ sized 2-D CCD and the pixel resolution is about 500m. And then, OCI is simulated to be controlled to target the required coverage accurately. As a result of it, coverage by OCI FOV is determined. Finally, all coverages by OCI FOV are mapped.

Since the tide embankment construction started in 1991, the coastal environment in and around the Saemangeum area has undergone changes rapidly, there is a need for monitoring the environmental change in this region. Owing to high temporal and spatial heterogeneity of the coastal ecosystem and processes as well as the expense with traditional filed sampling at discrete locations, satellite remote sensing measurements offer a unique perspective on mapping a large region simultaneously because of the synoptic and repeat coverage and that quantitative algorithms used for estimating constituents' concentration in the coastal environments. Thus, the main objectives of the present study are to analyze the retrieved Suspended Sediment (SS) pattern to predict changes after the commencement of the tide embankment construction work in 1991. This is accomplished with a series of the Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery acquired from 1985-2002 (a total of 18 imageries). Instead of a simple empirical algorithm, we implement an analytical SS algorithm, developed by Ahn et al. (2003), which is especially developed for estimating SS concentration (SSC) in Case-2 waters. The results show that there is a significant change in SS pattern, which is mainly influenced by the tide and tidal height after the construction of the embankment work. As the construction progressed, the distribution pattern of SS has greatly changed, and the rate of SS concentration in the gap area of the dyke of post-construction has significantly increased.

IKONOS 1m satellite imagery is particularly well suited for 3-D feature extraction and 1 :5,000 scale topographic mapping. Because the image line and sample calculated by given RPCs have the error of more than 11m, in order to be able to perform feature extraction and topographic mapping, rational polynomial coefficients(RPCs) camera model that are derived from the very complex IKONOS sensor model to describe the object-image geometry must be refined by several Ground Control Points(GCPs). This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of the geometric accuracy that can be achieved with IKONOS imagery by refining the offset and scaling factors of RPCs using several GCPs. If only two GCPs are available, the offsets and scale factors of image line and sample are updated. If we have more than three GCPs, four parameters of the offsets and scale factors of image line and sample are refined first, and then six parameters of the offsets and scale factors of latitude, longitude and height are updated. The stereo images acquired by IKONOS satellite are tested using six ground points. First, the RPCs model was refined using 2 GCPs and 4 check points acquired by GPS. The results from IKONOS stereo images are reported and these show that the RMSE of check point acquired from left images and right are 1.021m and 1.447m. And then we update the RPCs model using 4 GCPs and 2 check points. The RMSE of geometric accuracy is 0.621 m in left image and 0.816m in right image.

The objective of this study is to discuss the future trend of the community bus. In doing so, we have selected Nagasaki City of Japan. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is used for selection of the routes. In the present study we are going to add new parameters and new selection method. As a result of the study, we have been able to identify some best possible and detailed routes for the community bus operation in Nagasaki City, which meets the requirement of the welfare community as well as general passengers.

The concept of e-Business has been around for more than two decades but it has not been used widely enough due to high installation and maintenance cost and complexity. In order to solve such problems, two standardization organizations UN/CEFACT and OASIS have developed an open e-Business standard called ebXML that can be easily adopted by industries. Based on the ebXML, we have developed an e-Logistics integrated platform for industries to do business electronically. The e-Logistics integrated platform was applied to B2B postal logistics industry and efficient interoperability between companies with different systems has been achieved.

With the introduction to ebXML and web service related standards, enterprises struggle to adapt to the rapidly evolving technology to meet the complex needs of the enterprise customer. The ability to integrate and interoperate individual services within enterprise and with other enterprise's information technology infrastructure using standard-based business processes is an important element of business process management system. For over 25 years EDI has established VAN based solution of exchanging business information in electronic form. However EDI solutions are only accessible to large organizations due to the cost factor. Moreover lack of well accepted B2B business process standards is hindering the success of promoting interoperability between organizations of any size. ebXML work is focused on defining the standard B2B business process context and its runtime semantics in order to remove these hindrances. However ebXML framework does not recommend any particular implementation model to interact with enterprise internal system. This paper propose a end to end business process management architecture by applying ebXML in the front end of the enterprise system and using BPEL to integrate front end services into related services within enterprise.

In multi-dimensional image, ICA-based feature extraction algorithm, which is proposed in this paper, is for the purpose of detecting target feature about pixel assumed as a linear mixed spectrum sphere, which is consisted of each different type of material object (target feature and background feature) in spectrum sphere of reflectance of each pixel. Landsat ETM+ satellite image is consisted of multi-dimensional data structure and, there is target feature, which is purposed to extract and various background image is mixed. In this paper, in order to eliminate background features (tidal flat, seawater and etc) around target feature (laver farm) effectively, pixel spectrum sphere of target feature is projected onto the orthogonal spectrum sphere of background feature. The rest amount of spectrum sphere of target feature in the pixel can be presumed to remove spectrum sphere of background feature. In order to make sure the excellence of feature extraction method based on ICA, which is proposed in this paper, laver farm feature extraction from Landsat ETM+ satellite image is applied. Also, In the side of feature extraction accuracy and the noise level, which is still remaining not to remove after feature extraction, we have conducted a comparing test with traditionally most popular method, maximum-likelihood. As a consequence, the proposed method from this paper can effectively eliminate background features around mixed spectrum sphere to extract target feature. So, we found that it had excellent detection efficiency.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the spatial relationship between landslides and geospatial data set and to map the landslide susceptibility using this relationship, and the landslide occurrence data in Kangneung area in 2002. Landslide locations were identified from interpretation of satellite images. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using an artificial neural network. The weights of each factor were determined by the back-propagation training method. Susceptibility maps were constructed from Geographic Information System (GIS), The cases were overlaid and cross overlaid for landslide susceptibility mapping in each study area in Kangneung.

We model a moving object as a sizable physical entity equipped with GPS, wireless communication capability, and a computer such as a PDA and mobile phone. Furthermore, we have observed that a real trajectory of a moving object is the result of interactions among moving objects in the system yielding Multi-points instead of a line segment. In this paper, the new types and operations are integrated seamlessly into the moving object framework to achieve a relatively simple, consistent and powerful overall model and query language for constrained and unconstrained movement.

The task of development and usage in a corporate computer network of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) of integrated technology of joint use by the scientists of satellite and sub satellite data on a Northwestern Pacific is considered. This integrated technology is realized by embedding of satellite data in the corporate oceanographic GIS of FEB RAS as a new information layer, and also by support of GIS by program techniques for specialized processing of both kinds of the data. As a result of integration the specialists of FEB RAS have an opportunity to carry out coordinated samples of satellite and various oceanographic data as a function of area, time and other important conditions, visualize them together and carry out analytical processing with the usage of the GIS tools. Application of the realized approach to improve the techniques of detection and description of the oceanic phenomena on ERS-l and ERS-2 SAR images as well as to improve of perspective techniques of the usage the brightness temperatures measured by a microwave radiometers AMSR-E on a board of Aqua (USA) satellites are discussed.

In the telematics industry, the development of an open telematics terminal platform technology will be a great contribution to the telematics industry with an interoperability and adaptability of the telematics services. This paper proposes a terminal platform test process and a prototype of terminal platform testbed systems for an open telematics terminal platform test.

Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) for the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service is planned to be launched onto Geostationary Earth Orbit in 2008 according to the Korea national space program. A feasibility study on the solar constraint in the operation of the COMS meteorological imager (MI) is performed using the GOES imager hardware operation characteristics. The Earth observation areas of the MI are introduced and the observation time of the MI observation area is calculated. The sun light can enter into the MI optical system around the local midnight and impinge on the performance of the MI. The solar eclipse viewed from the satellite occurs near local midnight around the equinox. This study discusses the restriction of imaging operation time that should be considered in order to avoid the solar intrusion about local midnight and to keep acceptable image quality for the MI observation areas. This study could be useful to build the operation concept of the MI during the development of the MI.

The International Space Station (ISS) offers research opportunities to researchers through crew's space mission in the field of remote sensing. ISS provides the facilities to place and operate experiment equipments in a variety of fields, especially, microgravity experiments and Earth observations. This paper is intended to give readers a brief introduction to the ISS utilization and the capabilities for remote sensing researches. We investigate what kind of crew missions and payloads should be developed for remote sensing researches on the ISS.

Classification of Earth natural components within a full polarimetric SAR image is one of the most important applications of radar polarimetry in remote sensing. In this paper, the unsupervised classification algorithms based on the combined use of the polarimetric processing technique such as the target decomposition and statistical complex Wishart classification method are evaluated and applied to vegetated terrain in Jeju volcanic island.

In this paper, multifrequency, polarimetric SAR data acquired during the first SIR-C/XSAR mission over the Seoul and Gyunggi-do (Korea) test sites are analyzed. The main objective of the study is to assess the possibility of extracting relevant information about surface properties for geophysical applications using polarimetry. This study analyses the characteristics of polarization responses and polarimetric parameters to conditions present in urban, river, agricultural, and forested areas. Results indicate that the dominant scattering property from these fields varies depending on the land cover types. The polarization response graphs and the backscattering coefficients associated with the polarimetric parameters are also useful in characterizing these cover types.

Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is an active micro­wave instrument that performs high-resolution observation under almost all weather conditions. Although there are many advantages of SAR instrument, many complicated steps are involved in order to generate SAR image products. Many research and algorithms have been proposed to process radar signal and to increase the quality of SAR products. However, it is hard to find research which compare the quality of SAR products generated with different algorithms and processing methods. In our previous research, a SAR processing s/w was developed for a ground station. In addition, quality assessment procedures and their test parameters inside a SAR processor was proposed. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the quality of SAR images generated from the developed SAR processing s/w. However, If there are no direct measurements such as radar reflector or scattering field measurement values it is difficult to compare SAR images generated with different methods. An alternative procedures and parameters for SAR image quality evaluation are presented and the problems involved in the comparison methods are discussed. Experiments based on real data have been conducted to evaluate and analyze quality of SAR images.

SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) signal data need a focusing procedure to make the information available to the user. In recent SAR systems, various sensing modes and mission operations are applied to acquire high-resolution SAR images. Therefore, in order to develop generalized focusing software for multi-satellites, a regularized parameter configuration that sufficiently represents sensor and platform characteristics of the SAR system is required. The objective of this paper is to introduce the consideration of parameter definition for developing a generalized SAR processor and to discuss the flexibility and extensibility of defined parameters. The proposed parameter configuration can be applied to a SAR processor. Experiments based on real data will show the suitability of the suggested processing parameters.

We chose the Kushiro wetland in Hokkaido, Japan, as a test site to monitor wetland areas. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can carry out continuous observation in any weather conditions, and can therefore be used to observe high humidity areas such as wetlands. We applied multi-parameter SAR data (dual-frequency, multi-polarization, and multi-incidence angle) to monitoring the wetland forest. To find the optimum incidence angle and polarization for monitoring the wetland biomass, a simple backscattering model of wetland vegetation was developed and applied to estimate backscattering coefficients for different biomass and surface conditions.

The MODIS Land Rapid Response System (RRS) has been developed to provide rapid access to MODIS data globally, with initial emphasis on 250 m color composite imagery and active fire data. Fire detection is based on a contextual algorithm that exploits the strong emission of mid-infrared radiation from fires. This algorithm examines each pixel of the MODIS swath, and ultimately assigns to each one of the following classes: missing data, cloud, water, non-fire, fire, or unknown. In this paper, we introduce the MODIS Rapid Response System established at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and present some application results for Korea using the direct broadcast data acquired at KARI ground station.

The Studying is on developing precision of the moisture information on a soil. We used the data of AQUA AMSR-E which were obtained by Direct Receiving System in Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA). Although we know the Soil Moisture Information(SMI) helps the numerical weather model to produce the realistic results, we couldn't do it for the problem on a spatial resolution of the data is too low to apply. So we've tried to develop in a spatial resolution by using the AMSR-E data with a Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and Normal Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) from AQUA MODIS and compared the difference between their information in statics. The result is more precise than the simple algorithm by a polarization ratio, and we could get the better result to use in forecast practically, if it's apply to get more detail in the vegetation temperature.

This paper was carried out desertification area change detection from 1980s to 2000s per unit decade using by multitemporal satellite images (Landsat MSS, TM, ETM+). This study aims to use Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA) to identify and classify study area. Endmembers is selected bare soil, green vegetation (GV), water body using by Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF). Endmembers used to generate increase and decrease images respective from 1980s to 1990s and from 1990s to 2000s. From the analysis of multitemporal change detection for three periods, it was apparent that the area of bare soil increased significantly, with simultaneous decrease of GV and water body. The multitemporal fraction images can be effectively used for change detection. Though there is no field survey dataset, SMA is reliable result of change detection in desertification in China.

Motivation of this study is based on these two aspects: geologic uses of ASTER and application scheme of Spectral Mixture Analysis. This study aims at geologic mapping for mineral exploration using ASTER and LANDSAT 7 ETM+ at Mongolian plateau region by SMA. After basic pre-processing such as the normalization, geometric corrections and calibration of reflectance, related to endmembers selection and spectral signature deviation, both methods using spectral library and using PPI(Pixel Purity Index) are performed and compared on a given task. Based on these schemes, SMA is performed using LANDSAT 7 ETM+ and ASTER image. As the results, fraction map showing geologic rock types are enough to meet purposes such as geologic mapping and mineral potential mapping in the case of both uses of these different types of remotely sensed images. It concluded that this approach based on SMA with LANDSAT and ASTER is regarded as one of effective schemes for geologic remote sensing.

A multi-stage hierarchical clustering technique, which is an unsupervised technique, has been proposed in this paper for classifying the hyperspectral data .. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The 'local' segmentor of the first stage performs region-growing segmentation by employing the hierarchical clustering procedure with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous. The 'global' segmentor of the second stage, which has not spatial constraints for merging, clusters the segments resulting from the previous stage, using a context-free similarity measure. This study applied the multistage hierarchical clustering method to the data generated by band reduction, band selection and data compression. The classification results were compared with them using full bands.

MSC (Multi Spectral Camera) system is a remote sensing payload to obtain high resolution ground image. In this application, uniformity characteristic is important as well as GSD (Ground Resolved Distance) and SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). MSC image chain is consisted of OM (Optical Module), CCD, Video processor, NUC and DCSU (Data Compression and Storage Unit). Each block makes and corrects MSC's nonuniformity response. This paper shows the cause of nonuniformity error and the correction scheme of MSC system from the electronic point of view.

Output data streams of the MSC contain flags, Headers and image data according to the established protocols and data formats. Especially the Header added to each data lines contain information of a line sync, a line counter and, ancillary data which consist of ancillary identification bit and one ancillary data byte. This information is used by ground station to calculate the geographic coordinates of the image and get the on-board time and several EOS(Electro-Optical Subsystem) parameters used at the time of imaging. Therefore, the EGSE(Electrical Ground Supporting Equipment) that is used for testing MSC has to have functions of interpreting and displaying this Header information correctly following the protocols. This paper describes the design of the header data processing module which is in EOS­EGSE. This module provides users with various test functions such as header validation, ancillary block validation, line-counter and In-line counter validation checks which allow convenient and fast test on imagery data.

As a main management unit of MSC, PMU controls the MSC payload operation by issuing commands to other subunit and PMU internal modules. One of these main control functions is to drive the APS(Antenna Pointing System) when APS motion is required. For this purpose, SBC(Single Board Computer) for calculating motor commands and APDE for driving APM(Antenna Pointing Mechanism) by PWM signal operate inside PUM. In this paper, details on APDE design shall be described such as electronic board architecture, primary and redundant design concept, Cross-Strap, FPGA contents and latch-up immune concept, etc., which shall show good practices of electronic board design for space program.

SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) is one of the most important performance for the electro-optical camera system. This paper shows not only the SNR analyses for the MSC system, which is the payload in the KOMPSAT2 satellite, but also the trials for its improvement in the electronics circuit design. The MSC deals with one panchromatic band and four multi-spectral bands. The SNR analyses are performed based on the MSC design for the each band and assuming that the defined radiance reached directly to the sensor entrance pupil. In the SNR calculation, shot noise, dark current noise, analog electronics noise and ADC quantization noise are considered as noise sources. In these noise sources, especially, the electronics noise depends on the camera electronics design. This paper shows the camera electronics design to increase SNR and its test results as well as the SNR analyses.

MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) system is an electro-optical camera system which is being developed to be installed on KOMPSAT-2 satellite. High resolution image data from MSC system will be transmitted to the ground-station through x-band antenna called APS (Antenna Pointing System). APS is a directional antenna which will point to the receiving antenna at ground station while the satellite is passing over it. The APS needs to be controlled accurately to provide the reliable communication with big RF link margin. The APS is controlled by ATS (Antenna Tracking Software) which is included in the MSC software. ATS uses the closed loop control algorithm which will use TPF (Tracking Parameter File) as an input for antenna position, and will use two resolve readings from APS as a feedback. ATS has been developed and verified using APS QM (Qualification Model) and all the control parameters for ATS have been tested and verified. Various kinds of maximum, nominal and realistic dynamics for the APS movement have been simulated and verified. In this paper, closed loop servo control algorithm and obtained APS position error from the verification test with APS QM will be presented in detail

MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) system is a remote sensing instrument to obtain high resolution ground image. EOS (Electro-Optic System) for MSC mainly consists of PMA (Primary Mirror Assembly), SMA (Secondary Mirror Assembly), HSTS (High Stability Telescope Structure) and DFPA (Detector Focal Plane Assembly). High performance of EOS makes it possible for MSC system to provide high resolution and high quality ground images. Temperature of the EOS needs to be controlled to be in a specific range in order not to have any thermal distortion which can cause performance degradation. It is controlled by full redundant CPU based electronics. The validity of thermistor readings can be checked because a few thermistors are installed on each control point on EOS. Various kinds of thermal control logics are used to prevent 'Single Point Failure'. Control logic has a few set of database in order not to be corrupted by SEU (Single Event Upset). Even though the thermal control logic is working automatically, it can also be monitored and controlled by ground-station operator. In this paper, various ways of thermal control logic for EOS in MSC will be presented, which include thermal control mode and logic, redundancy design and status monitoring and reporting scheme.

The Channel Coding Unit (CCU) is an integral component of Payload Data Transmission System (PDTS) for the Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC) data. The main function of the CCU is channel coding and encryption. CCU has two channels (I & Q) for data processing. The input of CCU is the output of DCSU (Data Compression & Storage Unit). The output of CCU is the input of QTX which modulate data for RF communication. In this paper, there are the overview, short H/W description and operation concept of CCU.

There is a trend to replace TWTA of SSPA in S-Band uplink application for satellite operation. KARI developed l20W full S-Band SSPA system in early 2004. This paper covers SSPA system design and its test results. Through tests, nominal gain of 57dB, gain stability of +/-1dB over frequency, and gain stability of +/-0.5dB over temperature were shown. IMD value of -16.5dBc, -19dBc were revealed in PI and P3 output operations. With meeting specifications, l20W SSPA is expected to be used in operational S-Band uplink application.

Ranging and 2-way Doppler measurements are very essential source for orbit determination in LEOP (Launch and Early Operation). This paper shows ranging system features of 13M TT &C antenna and test results recently acquired with KOMPSAT-l. Ranging and 2-way Doppler measurements were compared with KOMPSAT-I GPS telemetry data. Through comparison, it was found that constant and accurate ranging measurements are available with 13M antenna system. Ranging and Doppler measurement function is expected to be used for KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2.

In early 2004, KARI developed 5ft S-Band TT&C antenna for especially KOMPSAT-2 operation in LEOP phase. This paper shows system features of 5ft S-Band antenna and its test result with KOMPSAT-l. Tracking test, command uplink test and telemetry downlink test were performed. Through tests, 5ft antenna was verified to be operational in uplink and downlink with KOMPSAT series. Due to its inherent wide 3dB beam-width of about 7deg at S-Band, this antenna system can be used very effectively even though orbital information is less accurate like LEOP and spacecraft safe mode.

Not all CCD pixels generate uniform value for the uniform radiance due to the different process of manufacture and each pixel characteristics. And the image data compression is essential in the real time image transmission because of the high line rate and the limited RF bandwidth. This pixel's nonuniformity and the loss compression make CCD pixel correction necessary in on-orbit condition. In the MSC system, the NUC unit, which is a part of MSC PMU, is charge of the correction for CCD each pixel. The correction is performed with the gain and the offset table for the each pixel and the each TDI mode. These correction tables are generated and programmed in the PMU Flash memory through the various image data tests at the ground test. Besides, they can be uploaded from ground station after onorbit calibration. This paper describes the principle of the table generation and the test way of the non-uniformity after NUC

The DCSU performs satellite payload data acquisition and storage functions before sending the data to the ground station. While imaging, the DCSU makes a file per each input channel and store into memory stack. For the successful imaging mission, proper DCSU mission parameters should be uploaded before the mission such as file name, file size, output channel for the download transmission and so on. This paper will describe the DCSU recording mechanism and some notices that might be helpful for the ground operators.

Laminate Design of a composite tube for a space telescope(Fig. 1) under hygrothermal load is studied. Carpet plots for laminate effective engineering constants are generated and used for selecting the best tube lay-ups satisfying the optomechanical requirements for a space telescope being dimensional1y stable under orbital thermal loading. Despace of the tubes constructed with the selected lay-ups are calculated with a Zig-Zag Triangular Element which accurately represents through thickness stress variations for laminated structures. The effects of moisture absorption when exposed to humidity environment and moisture desorption through outgassing on the dimensional stability are also investigated.

The SRI (Super Resolution Imager) is the development project for the next generation satellite camera. This camera has more high resolution than the present satellite camera. It's used by very accurate observation and other multi-purposes. In this paper, the SRI electronic system is described in terms of H/W (Configuration and Function operation).

The SRI (Super Resolution Imager) uses the CCD (Charge coupled device) detector that is used to convert the light into electronic data. The purpose of the SRI is to obtain data for high resolution images by converting incoming light into digital stream of pixel data. The SRI has a high resolution, so this electronic system needs more fast imaging data processing, detector control and data transmission systems. This report describes the required system specification and manufactured electronic system for satellite.

The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is commonly used to characterize the spatial quality of imaging systems. This work is the attempt to measure the MTF for KOMPSAT EOC using the non-parametric method as ground inputs. The spatial performance of the KOMPSAT EOC was analyzed by edge method while in flight using multi-temporal image data collected over test site in Seoul. The results from this work demonstrate the potential applicability of this method to estimate MTF for high spatial resolution satellite KOMPSAT-2 that is being developed to be launched in 2005.

To date the KOMPSAT OSMI(Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager) data have been widely used in natural disaster monitoring such as Typhoon, Asian Dust, Red Tide, and Forest Fire. Quantitative analyses related to the marine ecosystem have been delayed because they require good quality of data through Cal/Val activities. To resolve such problem, KARI performed the OSMI crosscalibration study with SeaWiFS team. In this study, we will demonstrate the OSMI ocean color products with updated cross-calibration coefficients and compare them to the previous cross-calibration results.

QPSK (Quaternary Phase Shift Keying) will be adopted as the modulation of HRIT (High Rate Information Transmission) which is transmitted to COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) through HPA (High Power Amplifier) in ground segment. Due to the nonlinearity of HPA, IMD (Inter-Modulation Distortion) of multi-carrier signals and PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) of modulated HRIT must be considered to estimate the output power of HPA. In this paper, we measured the PAPR to various the roll-off factor of RRC (Root Raised Cosine filter) which is filtering the modulated HRIT signal for reducing ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference) and bandwidth. It was found that the minimum PAPR is 2.78dB at 0.5 of roll-off factor for scrambled data. It's 2.78dB of P APR will be in output power selecting in COMS earth station.

There is a world-wide trend to implement autonomous TM/TC system in satellite operations. KARI developed CALS(Command AutoLoader System) for KOMPSAT-1 operation automation in 2004. This paper provides system requirement, system design, system test and operational procedure. Through test with simulator and KOMPSAT-1, CALS was verified to meet all functional and operational requirement like scheduling, real-time telemetry check, CRC generation, command grouping. CALS is expected to be used in KOMPSAT-1 normal mission operation in end of 2004

Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has a plan to launch COMS for consistent monitoring of the Korean Peninsula. Korea Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the main payloads of COMS which will provide a monitoring of ocean-colour around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. Ocean color observation from geostationary platform is required to achieve the proper spatial and temporal resolution for coastal observation mission. In this paper the characteristics of GOCI and LEO sensors are discussed. GOCI will provide the measurement data of 6 visible channels and 2 near-infrared channels (400nm ~ 900nm). The integration time and aperture diameter required to achieve the SNR specification of KGOCI are analyzed.

This paper outlines the development of image processing system, which will allow the general users in Government and Public organizations easily to use and apply KOMPSAT EOC images in their own business. The system includes an import/export module of EOC image distributed in Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) file and various image processing analysis modules. Especially, the image mosaic and subset functions are designed to use EOC image as an image map, generating the Ortho-image module. To update the various spatial data with EOC image, some essential modules such as change detection by pattern recognition, overlay between images and vector data, and modification of vector data are implemented in the system. The system is developed based on the user request analysis of government agency, and suited for more efficient use of satellite image in public applications. Such system is expected to contribute to practical application of KOMPSAT-2 that will be launched in 2005. Further efforts will be made to accommodate the KOMPSAT -2 MSC data.

The Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) is a high spatial resolution, visible imaging sensor which collects visible image data of the earth's sunlit surface and is the primary payload on KOMPSAT-l. The purpose of the EOC payload is to provide high resolution visible imagery data to support cartography of the Korean Peninsula. The EOC is a push broom-scanned sensor which incorporates a single nadir looking telescope. At the nominal altitude of 685Km with the spacecraft in a nadir pointing attitude, the EOC collects data with a ground sample distance of approximately 6.6 meters and a swath width of around 17Km. The EOC is designed to operate with a duty cycle of up to 2 minutes (contiguous) per orbit over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset. The EOC has no pointing mechanism of its own. EOC pointing is accomplished by right and left rolling of the spacecraft, as needed. Under nominal operating conditions, the spacecraft can be rolled to an angle in the range from +/- 15 to 30 degrees to support the collection of stereo data. In this paper, the status of EOC such as temperature, dark calibration, cover operation and thermal control is checked and analyzed by continuously monitored state of health (SOH) data and image data during the mission life of 3 years. The aliveness of EOC and operation continuation beyond mission life is confirmed by the results of the analysis.

Although sustainable development of a city should in theory be based on updated spatial information like land cover/use changes, in practice there are no effective tools to get such information. However the development of satellite and sensor technologies has increased the supply of high resolution satellite data, allowing cost-effective, multi-temporal monitoring. Especially KOMPSAT-1(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) acquired a large number of images of the whole Korean peninsula and covering some large cities a number of times. In this study land-use patterns and trends of Daejeon from the year 2000 to the year 2003 will be considered using land use maps which are generated by manual interpretation of multi-temporal KOMPSAT EOC imagery and to show the possibility of using high resolution satellite remote sensing data for urban analysis.

Change detection is one of the common research topics in remote sensing. In general, global change detection methods using image difference method, etc, are used in low resolution images and local change detection methods using floating windows, etc, are used in high resolution images. But, these methods have disadvantages in practical use. If changed area images are automatically produced, these images will be used in public area such as regional planning, regional development managements. In this research, we developed new change detection method applicable KOMPSAT EOC images. This method automatically produces subset images in changed area.

Interferometry SAR (InSAR) is a technique to generate topographic map from complex data pairs observed by antennas at different locations. However, to obtain topographic information using InSAR is difficult task because it requires series of complicated process including phase unwrapping and precise recovery of the SAR geometry. Especially, accuracy of the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) produced by repeat pass single SAR pair could be influenced by atmospheric effect. Recently, a new InSAR technique to improve accuracy of DEM has been introduced that utilizes low resolution DEM with a number of SAR image pairs. The coarse DEM plays an important role in reducing phase unwrapping error caused by layover and satellite orbit error. In this study, we implemented DInSAR (Differential InSAR) method which combines low resolution DEMs and ERS tandem pair images. GTOPO30 DEM with 1km resolution, SRTM-3 DEM with 100m resolution, and DEM with 10m resolution derived from 1:25,000 digital vector map were used to investigate feasibility of DInSAR. The accuracy of the DEMs generated both by InSAR and DInSAR was evaluated.

This paper describes the SAR data processing S/W package it will be able to process the SAR image. This package constructs the several modules: SAR Image processing module, measuring module of surface displacement using differential interferometric SAR method, classification module using the POLSAR data, SAR Focusing module. In this paper, briefly describe the algorithm that is adopted to the functions, and module architecture.

This study aims at examining the environment of waterfronts by applying satellite remote sensing technique. In doing so we have selected Inchon International Airport, Korea as a case. As a method of the study, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land cover changes are estimated in and around Inchon International Airport. As a result of the study, we have found vegetation's change in the Airport and variation of neighborhood city by building of waterfront.

Presently, heat island phenomenon, leading towards global warming, is one of the major environmental problems. As a solution of this problem, roof and surface wall planting is considered to be effective. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of roof planting in reducing the heat island phenomenon. The results of the study show that, planted area of the observed house roof had lower average temperature, in between $l5-20^{\circ}C,$ in comparison with that of the unplanted area of the roof.

Space-borne multi-sensor data could provide fire scar and bum severity mapping. This paper will present detail mapping of burnt areas in Cheongyange Yesan of Korea with ETM+ image. Burn severity map based on ETM+ image was found to be affected by strong topographic illumination effects in mountainous forest area. Topographic effect is a factor which causes errors in classification of high spatial resolution image like IKONOS image. Minnaert constants J( in each band of ETM+ image is derived for reduction of mountainous terrain effects. Finally, this paper computes quantitative analysis of forest fire damage by each forest types.

Recently, the heat island phenomenon in which the temperature of a city part rises from the circumference ground has developed into a big problem. In this study, we aimed at examining the impact of increasing vegetation in urban areas to reduce the heat island phenomenon by taking the Fukuoka City of Japan as a case. In order to discuss the relation between vegetation environment and the heat island phenomenon, we have calculated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and mapped the spatial vegetation distribution. These are then compared with the heat island phenomenon investigations in Fukuoka City. The results of the study revealed that the areas showing comparatively lesser heat island phenomenon are those having increased vegetation.

In Japan for protecting the slides of steep sloped areas covering the face of slopes by sprayed mortar became popular since 1970s. But, these mortar walls are getting older now. In this background, this study aims to find ways to develop a diagnostic technique of these faces of slope without physically contacting or destroying them. In doing so, we have used heat infrared imaging processing method and developed a simulation model to predict the weak portion of the wall. The results revealed that, by following the model vacuum of mortar wall can be detected having thickness up to 15cm.

Since open-cut mining excavates gradually from the top of the mountain, vegetation planting is needed to reduce negative environmental impact on the surrounding environment. Accordingly, this study aimed at performing the environmental monitoring of the open-cut mining ground using the satellite remote sensing technique. As the research technique, in order to grasp the environmental change around the open-cut mining ground, NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) was calculated, and every year change of the vegetation activity was analyzed. The results of the study showed lower vegetation activity in the open-cut mining ground compared to the surrounding areas and suggested the need for closed monitoring by remote sensing techniques.

Spatial and temporal aspects of toxic dinoflagellate Cochlodinium.p blooms and consequences of physical features in complex coastal ecosystems, off the southern Korean coast, have been investigated using data obtained from SeaWiFS and AVHRR as well as in-situ observations. Hydrographic parameters measured using CTD sensors were used to elucidate physical factors affecting the spatial distribution and abundance of Cochlodinium.p blooms. The results show spatial and temporal variations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface temperature (SST) and reveal significant information about Cochlodinium.p blooms and process underlying their evolution. Satellitederived Chl-a estimates appear to be potential in explicating the evolution, movement and distribution of Cochlodinium.p blooms in the enclosed bays of the South Sea. The existence of thromohaline waters offshore provide favorable conditions for the rapid growth and subsequent southward initiation of Cochlodinium.p blooms that are influenced to flow on the offshore branch (OB) during September. It was observed that there was a significant variation in the sun-induced chlorophyll-a fluorescence signal in the remote sensing fluorescence spectra and its high-intensity was recognized during the period of exponential growth and physical transport. Satellite-derived Chl-a concentration during September 1999 ranged between $3­60mg/m^3$ inside the Jin-hae and adjacent Bays and $1-6mg/m^3$ in offshore waters, with varying Cochlodinium.p abundances 1500 to 26000 cells $ml^{-1}.$ The closely spaced CTD surveys and satellite-derived SST give a complete overview on the initiation of Cochlodinium.p blooms in hydrodynamically active regions of the offshore southern East Sea by the influence of Tsushima Warm Current (TWC).

A comparison was made between chlorophyll a from OSMI and SeaWiFS determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. The simple algorithm for calibrating and validating of OSMI chlorophyll a as level 2 data in the East China Sea in specially winter season was made by relationship between the estimated chlorophyll a and the measured chlorophyll a in the field. We compared the distributions of OSMI chlorophyll a, sea surface temperature and zooplankton biomass, catch amounts of the Pacific mackerel in the East China Sea.

Environmental management system has been constructed using by marine GIS, which is applied latest scientific algorithm, and fisheries related data for the citizens of the Jinhae Bay and executive officers. Through this system, we will get more easily marine environmental data, and production features of aquaculture farming areas.

This study is to trace the change of stream shape using the past series of aerial photographs, and to compare the land use changes of riparian area along the stream. For the Gyeongan national stream, aerial photographs of 1966, 1981 and 2000 were selected and ortho photographs were made with interior orientation and exterior orientation, respectively. As apparent changes of the stream, the consolidated reaches of stream with levee construction were straightened and their stream widths were widened. Especially the stream width of inlet part of Paldang lake was widened almost twice because of the rise of water level by dam construction in 1974. The land use maps (1966, 1981,2000) of riparian areas were also made, respectively and classified into 6 categories (water, forest, agricultural land, urban area, road, sandbar) by digitizing. The area of forest and agricultural land decreased and urban area increased as the stream maintenance was performed.

We proposed a new system to collect hyperspectral data using a general cargo crane. The system has advantageous characteristics for precise data collection and analysis. In order to evaluate the validity, we performed the system on actual rice paddy field and analyzed the observed data. On the process, we could successfully extract the pure vegetation spectrum with high stability. The data taken by the system are useful for detail analysis among fields. In future development, it can be used for obtaining the grand truth for calibrating satellite or aerial hyperspectral images.

Since variance of noise is important parameter for a noise filter to reduce noise in image and the performance of noise filter is dependent on estimated variance. In this paper, we apply additive noise variance estimation method to estimate variance of speckle noise of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. Generally, speckle noise is in multiplicative model, logarithmic transformation is then used to transform multiplicative model into additive model. Here, speckle noise is generally modeled as Gamma distribution function with different looks. The additive noise variance estimation is processed in log domain. The synthesis image and real image of SAR are implemented to test and confirm results and show that more accurate estimation can be achieved.

To overcome with large size noise source distribution network design difficulty in interferometric radiometer system, especially for sub-Y-type array, a new on-board calibration technique using noise re-radiation is proposed in this paper. The suggested calibration technique is using noise re-radiation effect of center antenna after noise source injection from matched load. This approach is especially proper to sub-Y-type array interferometric synthetic aperture radiometer in mm-wave frequency band. Compared with noise injection network of a conventional synthetic aperture radiometer, the system mass, volume, and hardware complexity is reduced and cost-effective. Only one internal noise source, matched load, is used for injection using noise re-radiation technique a small set of sub-Y receiver channels is calibrated. Detailed calibration scenario is discussed and simulation results about noise re­radiation effect are presented.

Oyster fanning structures in tidal flats are well detected by SAR system. Each frame of these artificial structures is composed of two vertical and one horizontal wooden pole. We investigate characteristics of polarimetric features in the target structures. In this paper, the results of AIRSAR L-band POLSAR data and experiments in laboratory are discussed. The ratio of single bounce to double bounce scattering depends of vertical pole height, direction of horizontal pole to radar look direction, and incidence angle as well as sea surface condition. We have conducted laboratory experiments. According to target scale, Ku-band and targets downsized by scale of 10 are used. The results of the experiments are summarized as: i) total power of the backscattering is more affected by vertical poles than a horizontal pole; ii) and backscattering from a horizontal pole is sensitive to the relative radar look direction to target array. We conclude that water level can be effectively measured by using interferometric phase and backscattering intensity if vertical poles in the water are observed by L-band HH- or VV-polarization. Measurement of tide height can be further improved if double bounced components are separated from fully polarized SAR data.

A numerical algorithm using the Method of Moments (MoM) is introduced to compute precisely the scattering matrices of very thin deciduous leaves in this paper. At first, a dyadic Green's function was formulated and an integral equation for a volumetric current distribution in a lossy dielectric body. Then, the MoM was applied to the scattering problem with a specific technique to handle the numerical poles. The accuracy of the numerical technique was verified by examining the technique with various ways, and used to examine the validity regions of the classical analytical models.

Extraction of ocean surface current velocity offers important physical oceanographic parameters especially on understanding ocean environment. Although Remote Sensing techniques were highly developed, the investigation of ocean surface current using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is not an easy task. This paper presents the results of ocean surface current observation using Doppler Centroid of ERS-1 SAR data obtained off the coast of Korea peninsula. We employed the concept, in which Doppler frequency shift and the ocean surface current are closely related, to evaluate ocean surface current. Moving targets cause Doppler frequency shift of the back scattered radar waves of SAR, thus the line-of-sight velocity component of the scatters can be evaluated. The Doppler frequency shift can be measured by estimating the difference between Doppler Centroid of raw SAR data and reference Doppler Centroid. Theoretically, the Doppler Centroid is zero; however, squinted antenna which is affected by several physical factors causes Doppler Centroid to be nonzero. The reference Doppler Centroid can be obtained from measurements of sensor trajectory, attitude and Earth model. The estimated Doppler Centroid was compensated by considering the accurate attitude estimation of ERS-1 SAR. We could verify the correspondence between the estimated ocean surface current and observed in-situ data in the error bound.

The ground subsidence that occurred in an abandoned coal mining area, Gaeun, Korea, was observed by using 25 JERS-1 SAR interferograms from November 1992 to October 1998. We estimated the subsidence on a subset of image pixels corresponding to point-wise permanent scatters (PSs) by exploiting a long temporal series of interferometric phases. The results were compared it with a distribution map of in situ examined crack level. PSs were identified by means of amplitude dispersion index and coherence of the interferograms. The measured subsidence rate represented the average velocity in a period of image acquisition and excluded complex nonlinear displacements such as an abrupt collapse. The mean line-of-sight velocity in the study area is 0.19cm/yr and an r.m.s. error is 0.18cm/yr. The center of the abandoned Gaeun coal mine (0.49cm/yr) and the area near to the Gaeun station (1.66cm/yr) were observed as most rapidly subsiding areas.

In Europe most Earth Observation (EO) data users rely on several EO missions, both to increase sustainability of their service and to widen the range of observation parameters. In addition to its own missions such as ERS 1 &2, ENVISAT and the Earth Explorers, ESA therefore offers access to the scientific and applications community to so-called 'Third Party Missions'. Third Party (TP) missions are complementing the observations of ESA missions, are used to prepare for future ESA missions including cross-calibration and create synergy to favor a wider use of EO data within ESA Member States.

Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) is a payload on the KOMPSAT -2 satellite to perform the earth remote sensing. The instrument images the earth using a push-broom motion with a swath width of 15 km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of 1 m over the entire field of view (FOV) at altitude 685 Km. The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of $20\%$ over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain! offset and onboard image data compression/storage. MSC instrument has one(1) channel for panchromatic Imaging and four(4) channel for multi-spectral Imaging covering the spectral range from 450nm to 900nm using TDI CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA). In this paper, the configuration, the interface of MSC hardware and the MSC operation concept are described. And the method of the MSC calibration are described and the design of MSC calibration operation to measure the change of MSC after Launch & Early Operation(LEOP) and normal mission operations are discussed and analyzed.

The on-orbit MTF for the electro-optical camera (EOC) of the KOMPSAT I was calculated from sampled image of edge target. The image derived MTF values are smaller than ground measurement values but meet original requirements of EOC. The MTF from MTF compensated image was larger than and ground measurement result.

Geometric shape in a surface material sometimes produces different slopes that have different illuminations. It causes some difficulties to get same classification results or to identify as an object for the different facets in a surface material. A regression method is suggested to adjust the spectral information of different facets in a surface material using image segments. The method to adjust spectral information in a building facets was very successful. The most important advantage of this method is to keep the intensity of spectral information as well as spectral response. This method can also be implemented in an adaptive way.

To find the best way to distinguish sand dunes from urban building and rural patches, textural analysis has been performed in Kimnyeong sand dune, Jeju. An aerial photo was re-sampled into one-meter. Homomorphic filters were applied to the original sub-scene and then high-pass filtered one. The entropy filtered one proves to be the best extraction method after high pass filtered-homomorphic filters in urban areas. The spectral values of sand dune area were similar to open land in rural area. In contrast, the texture values of sand dune area are more homogeneous than those of open land in rural area.

This paper explores the use of IKONOS imagery of 1 m resolution panchromatic (PAN) band and 4 m resolution multi-spectral (MS) band in the development of agriculture­related data inventories. Three images (May 25, 2001, December 25, 2001, October 23, 2003) were used to obtain temporal distributions in crop cover characteristics such as rice, pear, grape, red pepper, corn, barley, garlic and surface water cover of reservoir with field investigations. The availability and cost problems are expected to solve by KOMPSAT-2 that is scheduled to launch in 2005. The capability of KOMPSAT-2 image for crop and rural water resources management will increase by accumulating temporal data inventories as a database.

This paper presents multi-source spatial data integration models based on probability theory for landslide hazard assessment. Four probabilistic models such as empirical likelihood ratio estimation, logistic regression, generalized additive and predictive discriminant models are proposed and applied. The models proposed here are theoretically based on statistical relationships between landslide occurrences and input spatial data sets. Those models especially have the advantage of direct use of continuous data without any information loss. A case study from the Gangneung area, Korea was carried out to quantitatively assess those four models and to discuss operational issues.

Texture imaging, which means texture image creation by co-occurrence relation, has been known as one of useful image analysis methodologies. For this purpose, most commercial remote sensing software provides texture analysis function named GLCM (Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix). In this study, texture-imaging program for GLCM algorithm is newly implemented in the MS Visual IDE environment. While, additional texture imaging modules based on GLDV (Grey Level Difference Vector) are contained in this program. As for GLCM/GLDV texture variables, it composed of six types of second order texture function in the several quantization levels of 2(binary image), 8, and 16: Homogeneity, Dissimilarity, Energy, Entropy, Angular Second Moment, and Contrast. As for co-occurrence directionality, four directions are provided as $E-W(0^{\circ}),\;N-E(45^{\circ}),\;S-W(135^{\circ}),\;and\;N-S(90^{\circ}),$ and W-E direction is also considered in the negative direction of E- W direction. While, two direction modes are provided in this program: Omni-mode and Circular mode. Omni-mode is to compute all direction to avoid directionality problem, and circular direction is to compute texture variables by circular direction surrounding target pixel. At the second phase of this study, some examples with artificial image and actual satellite imagery are carried out to demonstrate effectiveness of texture imaging or to help texture image interpretation. As the reference, most previous studies related to texture image analysis have been used for the classification purpose, but this study aims at the creation and general uses of texture image for urban remote sensing.

Airborne laser scanning thechnology has been studied in many applications, DSM(Digital Surface Model) development, building extraction, 3D virtual city modeling. In this paper, we will evaluate the possibility of airborne laser scanning technology for transportation application, especially for recognizing moving vehicles on road. First, we initially segment the region of roads from all LiDAR DATA using the GIS map and intensity image. Secondly, the segmented region is divided into the roads and vehicles using the height threshold value of local based window. Finally, the vehicles will be classified into the several types of vehicles by MDC(Minimum Distance Classification) method using the vehicle's geometry information, height, length, width, etc

Returned laser pulse has certain relationship with vegetation canopy structure (canopy closure, height, LAI, biomass). This study attempts to analyze the characteristics of airborne laser scanner data over very dense forest canopy. Discrete pulse laser scanner data were obtained on April 25, 2004 along with digital aerial color imagery. Using forest stand maps, 14 sample stands of 7 species groups were selected and the elevations from the first and last laser return were compared. From the preliminary analysis, we found that the difference between the first and last return was higher with deciduous forest stand than in coniferous stand. Although difference between the first and the last laser returns often corresponds to tree height, it would not be the case for the forest site having very dense canopy structure.

This paper focuses on recovering systematic biases during LIDAR calibration, particularly using natural surfaces as control features. Many previous approaches have utilized all the points overlapping with the control features and often experienced with an inaccurate value converged with a poor rate due to wrong correspondence in pairing a point and the corresponding control features. To overcome these shortcomings, we establish a preventive scheme to select the pairs of high confidence, where the confidence value is based on the error budget associated with the point measurement and the linearity and roughness of the control feature. This approach was then applied to calibraring the LIDAR data simulated with the given systematic biases. The parameters were successfully recovered using the proposed approach with the accuracy and convergence rate superior to those using the previous approaches.

LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) system can record intensity data as well as range data. Recently, LiDAR intensity data is widely used for landcover classification, ancillary data of feature extraction, vegetation species identification, and so on. Since the intensity return value is associated with several factors, same features is not consistent for same flight or multiple flights. This paper investigated correlation between intensity and range data. Once the effects of range was determined, the single flight line normalization and the multiple flight line normalization was performed by an empirical function that was derived from relationship between range and return intensity

The geometry of satellite image captured by linear pushbroom scanner is different from that of frame camera image. Since the exterior orientation parameters for satellite image will vary scan line by scan line, the epipolar geometry of satellite image differs from that of frame camera image. As we know, 2D affine orientation for the epipolar image of linear pushbroom scanners system are well-established by using the collinearity equation (Testsu Ono, 1999). Also, another epipolar geometry of linear pushbroom scanner system is recently established by Habib(2002). He reported that the epipolar geometry of linear push broom satellite image is realized by parallel projection based on 2D affine models. Here, in this paper, we compared the Ono's method with Habib's method. In addition, we proposed a method that generates epipolar resampled images. For the experiment, IKONOS stereo images were used in generating epipolar images.

The Mobile Mapping System is an effective method to acquire the position and image data using vehicle equipped with the GPS (Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and CCD camera. It is used in various fields of road facility management, map update, and etc. In the general photogrammetry such as aerial photogrammetry, GCP (Ground Control Point)s are needed to compute the image exterior orientation elements (the position and attitude of camera). These points are measured by field survey at the time of data acquisition. But it costs much time and money. Moreover, it is not possible to make sufficient GCP as much as we want. However Mobile Mapping System is more efficient both in time and money because it can obtain the position and attitude of camera at the time of photographing. That is, Indirect Georeferencing must use GCP to compute the image exterior orientation elements, but on the other hand Direct Georeferencing can directly compute the image exterior orientation elements by GPS/INS. In this paper, we analyze about the positional accuracy comparison of ground point using the Direct Georeferencing and Indirect Georeferencing.

In general, mineral resources prospect is performed in several methods including geological survey, geological structure analysis, geochemical exploration, airborne geophysical exploration and remote sensing, but data collected through these methods are usually not integrated for analysis but used separately. Therefore we compared various data integration techniques and generated final mineral resources potentiality map.

This paper is aimed at analyzing the soil erosion hazard zone in farm land. RUSLE was used for an analysis of soil erosion amount, and for the spatial data of basin, soil erosion amount was calculated by extracting the respect topography space related factors of RUSLE using DEM, Landuse, Soil map as base map. As a result of analysis on the calculated soil erosion amount according to land use type, it was analyzed that the most soil erosion occurred in orchard area, i.e., 40.08ton/ha/yr at average. It was classified into 5 classes depending on the calculated soil erosion amount. of which Class V was decided as soil erosion hazard zone, and for this area, 72.5ha or so, $2.4\%$ of the entire farm land was assessed as erosion hazard zone.

Taipei Water Management Office (TWMO) is one of the eleven district offices in Water Resource Agency. Water management is the top priority to be pursued both on daily management and long-term management at TWMO. There are five departments to perform a wide range of tasks in addition to water management. All management prescriptions are simply to provide sustainable clean water for about four millions population in Taipei. TWMO has gone through 16 years experience of development and implementation of GIS in water management. The objectives of this paper are to provide the major ingredients of successful and operational GIS for water management. The five departments at TWMO have performed tasks such as city planning, construction management, forest management, land use enforcement, soil and water conservation, water quality monitoring and protection, garbage collection, and sewage disposal management. Data base creation was one of the major jobs to be done. Update of data base has to be done on a daily basis. Computers, its peripheral, and software are essential for GIS developed at TWMO. Know-how and technical skill on computers and GIS for every technician are contributing significantly such that GIS can be implemented on most of jobs performed at TWMO. Implementations of GIS have been pursued by application modules on a task-oriented basis. Application modules are simple, easy to use, and menu driven with only Chinese. Web-based and mobile GIS are the new components that make water management at TWMO stay on the right course. To solve problems encountered in water management by GIS at TWMO can be easily and user-friendly may be the most important experience.

To manage and query moving objects efficiently in MMDBMS, a memory index structure should be used. The most popular index structure for storing trajectories of moving objects is 3DR-tree. The 3DR-tree also can be used for MMDBMS. However, the volume of data can exceed the capacity of physical memory since moving objects report their locations continuously. To accommodate new location reports, old trajectories should be migrated to disk or purged from memory. This paper focuses on migration policies of a main memory index structure. Migration policies consist of two steps: (i) node selection, (ii) node placement. The first step (node selection) selects nodes that should be migrated to disk. The criteria of selection are the performance of insertion or query. The second step (node placement) determines the order of nodes written to disk. This step can be thought as dynamic declustering policies.

In the mobile environment, according to the movement of the object, the query finds the nearest special object or place from object position. However, because query object moves continuously in the mobile environment, query demand changes according to the direction attribute of query object. Also, in the case of moving of query object and simply the minimum distance value of query result, sometimes we find the result against the query object direction. Especially, in most road condition, as user has to return after reaching U-turn area, user rather spends time and cost. Therefore, in order to solve those problems, in this paper we propose the nearest neighbor method considering moving object position and direction for mobile recommendation system.

In order for effective damage prevention, it is necessary to have some idea of when, where, why and what kind of natural disasters may strike, and how large they may be. In this study, I made a database which can be use for GIS to facilitate multivariate analysis of presently available data for Shizuoka prefecture. This analysis can map out likely natural disaster locations and causes. Using the result of this analysis for GIS, a regional range of the disaster categorized by factors can be shown and analyzed visually and easily updated when a disaster occurs in the future.

Fresh water discharge from the sea floor strongly affects a coastal ecology and the diffusion of contaminants. Much fresh water discharge has been found in the edge of Kurobe alluvial fan, in which annual rainfall is over 4000mm and there is abundant groundwater. However, it is difficult to find the groundwater discharge, thus the search of possible areas with some remote sensing tools is required. Because the temperature of the discharge point is relatively low compared with the surrounding sea water surfaces, there is a possibility to detect the area as an irregular zone of thermal infrared images. Two anomalous temperature zones, which have no surface streams from rivers, are detected by ASTER thermal-infrared images. One of them was verified as the groundwater discharge point by dives. In addition, the distribution of water table under the land side of the two areas is also detected as irregular zones by a ground-penetrating radar

Hydrographic data obtained from several ship experiments have shown that internal waves are frequently observed in the East (Japan) Sea, mostly in the continental slopes located along the western side of the East Sea. It is well known that oceanic internal waves can be detected well in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Interactions between surface capillary-gravity waves and horizontally varying surface currents induced by internal waves produce variations in sea surface roughness which can be detected by SAR. C-band SAR images from ERS, ENVISAT ASAR and RADARSAT have been used to study the characteristics of internal waves in the East Sea. The observed properties of internal waves from many SAR images were compared and verified from in-situ measurements and theories.

This study is a comparative analysis of chlorophyll a retrievals in the JES from SeaWiFS and MODIS/Terra. SeaWiFS and MODIS/Terra data over period from 2000 through 2003 were compared. The chlorophyll concentration from the SeaWiFS was generally higher than that from MODIS during the period. There are some possible causes for such discrepancy: differences in the sensor sensitivity, chlorophyll algorithms, and atmospheric correction algorithms. We checked some of these possibilities. We also compared the data from other regions. The deviation between the two data sets was highly correlated with chlorophyll concentrations Atmospheric corrections seem the major cause of the discrepancy.

In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal Fronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST. As the result of harmonic analysis, distributions of the mean SST were $10~25^{\circ}C,$ and generally SST decreased as latitude increased. SST increased in the order as following; the South Sea $(20\~23^{\circ}C),$ the East Sea $(17\~19^{\circ}C)$, and the West $Sea(13\~16^{\circ}C).$ Annual amplitudes and phases were $4\~11^{\circ}C,\;210\~240^{\circ}$ and high values were shown as following; the West Sea $(A1,\;9\~11^{\circ}C),$ the Northern East Sea $(A5,\;8\~9^{\circ}C),$ the Southern East Sea $(A4,\;6\~8^{\circ}C),$ the South Sea $(A3,\;6\~7^{\circ}C),$ the East China Sea $(A2,\;4\~7^{\circ}C)$ and phases; $A3\;(238\~242^{\circ}),\;A4\;(235\~240^{\circ}),\;A5\;(225\~235^{\circ}),\;Al\;(220\~230^{\circ}),\;A2\;(210\~235^{\circ}),$ respectively, Both of them were related inversely except the area A2, therefore the rest areas were affected by seasonal variations. TF were detected by Soble Edge Detection Method using gradient of SST. Consequently, TF were divided into 4 fronts; the Subpolar Front (SPF) based on the Cold Water Mass (low SST and salinity Subartic Water), resulting from the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and the East Sea Proper Cold Water in the middle and low layer, and the Warm Water Mass (high SST and salinity Subtropical Water), resulting from the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) in area A4 and 5, the Kuroshio Front (KF) based on the Kuroshio Current (KC) and shelf waters in the East China Sea (ESC) in A2, and the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) based on the South Sea Coastal Water (SSCW) and TWC in A3. Also, the Tidal Front was weakly appeared in AI. TF located in steep slope of submarine topography. Annual amplitudes and phases were bounded in the same place, and these results should be considered to influence of seasonal variations.

Tropospheric parameters, in the form of Total Zenith Delay (TZD) corrections, were estimated with the current GPS network of Korea. We estimated the TZD using the Korea Astronomy Observatory GPS Network of nine permanent stations. About four years of data were processed to get the continuous time series of the TZD. The longest time series is obtained from the site DAEJ, which has been in operation for about 10 years. We analyzed the seasonal and annual signals in the TZD estimates at DAEJ and spatial correlations among eight sites.

We analyze the information level of local small and medium business in the base of Nolan's growth stage model. To estimate information level we do separate level analysis for six sections and integrated total level analysis. After analyzing information level of business, we focus on the factors of this result to understand the most influential environments. The local business we were studying are the third stage-control stage. But Organization of information department and Planning and control of information are the second stage. The number of computer system application field is very related to information level. We present the critical factors of information level of small and medium business.

War game Simulation System is a simulation system of military operation. In order to ensure all of the data that are running are secure, this system has to emphasize the security policy. In this paper, we analyze the running environment and the weakness of the security about exiting system. For improving the weakness, we design and implement this security system that is consisted of three components: Authentication System, Encryption System and Network Security System. Therefore, we can apply War game Simulation System to security system and improve the secure performance of this one.

The false alarm data in intrusion detection systems are divided into false positive and false negative. The false positive makes bad effects on the performance of intrusion detection system. And the false negative makes bad effects on the efficiency of intrusion detection system. Recently, the most of works have been studied the data mining technique for analysis of alert data. However, the false alarm data not only increase data volume but also change patterns of alert data along the time line. Therefore, we need a tool that can analyze patterns that change characteristics when we look for new patterns. In this paper, we focus on the false positives and present a framework for analysis of false alarm pattern from the alert data. In this work, we also apply incremental data mining techniques to analyze patterns of false alarms among alert data that are incremental over the time. Finally, we achieved flexibility by using dynamic support threshold, because the volume of alert data as well as included false alarms increases irregular.

Multiple-count problem is occurred when rectangle objects span across several buckets. The Cumulative Density (CD) histogram is a technique which solves multiple-count problem by keeping four sub-histograms corresponding to the four points of rectangle. Although it provides exact results with constant response time, there is still a considerable issue. Since it is based on a query window which aligns with a given grid, a number of errors may be occurred when it is applied to real applications. In this paper, we proposed selectivity estimation techniques using the generalized cumulative density histogram based on two probabilistic models: (1) probabilistic model which considers the query window area ratio, (2) probabilistic model which considers intersection area between a given grid and objects. In order to evaluate the proposed methods, we experimented with real dataset and experimental results showed that the proposed technique was superior to the existing selectivity estimation techniques. The proposed techniques can be used to accurately quantify the selectivity of the spatial range query on rectangle objects.

Spatiotemporal phenomena are ubiquitous aspects of real world. In the spatial and temporal databases, integrity constraints maintain the semantics of specific application domain and relationship between domains when proceed update in the database. Efficient maintenance of data integrity has become a critical problem, since testing the validity of a large number of constraints in a large database and after each transaction is an expensive task. Especially, in spatiotemporal domain, data is more complex than traditional domains and very active. Additionally, it is not considered that unified frameworks deal with both spatial and temporal properties to handle integrity constraints. Therefore, there need a model to maintain integrity constraints in the unified frameworks and enforcement and management techniques in order to preserve consistence.

Recently XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is becoming the standard for exchanging the documents on the web. And as the amount of information is increasing because of the development of the technique in the Internet, semantic web is becoming to appear for more exact result of information retrieval than the existing one on the web. Ontology which is the basis of the semantic web provides the basic knowledge system to express a particular knowledge. So it can show the exact result of the information retrieval. Ontology defines the particular concepts and the relationships between the concepts about specific domain and it has the hierarchy similar to the taxonomy. In this paper, we propose the generation of semi-automatic ontology based on XML documents that are interesting to many researchers as the means of knowledge expression. To construct the ontology in a particular domain, we suggest the algorithm to determine the domain. So we determined that the domain of ontology is to extract the information of movie on the web. And we used the generalized association rules, one of data mining methods, to generate the ontology, using the tag and contents of XML documents. And XTM (XML Topic Maps), ISO Standard, is used to construct the ontology as an ontology language. The advantage of this method is that because we construct the ontology based on the terms frequently used documents related in the domain, it is useful to query and retrieve the related domain.
