The overall Air Force's serious accident rate is decreasing, but the trainer's accident rate is on the rise from 0.24% in '00~'09 to 0.77% in '01~'19. Base on the SHELL model recommended by the ICAO, the risk factors of the introductory flight training course were analyzed, implications were examined, and safety promotion measures were proposed. A survey of 25 questions was organized based on regulations, guidelines, and related data for each component of the SHELL model in accordance with the introductory course of Air Force flight training. The survey was divided into a student group and instructor group and compared and analyzed into L-L, L-S, L-H, and L-E based on the results after conducting it, and implications for this were derived. Compared to other analysis factors, L-L showed that the average of the instructor group was relatively higher that of the student group in all questions.

Demand for air travel, which shrank sharply following the outbreak of the COVID-19, has recently recovered up to 80% before the spreading pandemic. As a result, the number of passengers are rapidly increasing again. However, financial difficulties and lack of skilled workers in the aftermath of a long-term recession and pandemic lead to a decrease in aviation safety awareness which is fundamental for safety culture. Consequently, this hazard can act as a potential risk factor for the global aviation industry preparing for a new leap forward in the post-pandemic era. Therefore, this study analyzed and defined the four key elements of aviation safety awareness; attitude, belief, perception, and value. Based on this analysis, this study combined the four key elements into the P-D-C-A cycle to derive what top management, middle managers, and workers should each do to continuously improve the positive safety culture.

The safe operation of military aircraft is crucial for national defense to prevent unnecessary loss of combat power. With the advancement of technology, the proportion of accidents caused by mechanical defects is decreasing compared to the beginning of aviation history, but the proportion of accidents caused by human factors is increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to identify factors that enhance flight safety behavior from various perspectives and explore related mechanisms. In this study, we examined the relationship between Air Force aircrew's calling and their flight safety behavior. With a sample of 357 Air Force aircrew, we found a significant positive relationship between calling and flight safety behavior, with affective commitment and moral duty mediating this relationship in parallel. We discussed theoretical and practical implications of the study based on these results.

Aviation turbulence, caused by atmospheric eddies, is a disruptive phenomenon that leads to abrupt aircraft movements during flight. To minimize the damages caused by such aviation turbulence, the Aviation Meteorological Office provides turbulence information through the Korea aviation Turbulence Guidance (KTG) and the Global-Korean aviation Turbulence Guidance (GKTG). In this study, we evaluated the performance of the KTG and GKTG models by comparing the in-situ EDR observation data and the generated aviation turbulence prediction data collected from the mid-level Korean Peninsula region from January 2019 to December 2021. Through objective validation, we confirmed the level of prediction performance and proposed improvement measures based on it. As a result of the improvements, the KTG model showed minimal difference in performance before and after the changes, while the GKTG model exhibited an increase of TSS after the improvements.

Not only in aviation industry but also in other industries, safety data plays a key role to improve the level of safety performance. By analyzing safety data such as aviation safety report (text data), hazard can be identified and removed before it leads to a tragic accident. However, pre-processing of raw data (or natural language data) collected from each site should be carried out first to utilize proactive or predictive safety management system. As air traffic volume increases, the amount of data accumulated is also on the rise. Accordingly, there are clear limitation in analyzing data directly by manpower. In this paper, a topic prediction model for aviation safety mandatory report is proposed. In addition, the prediction accuracy of the proposed model was also verified using actual aviation safety mandatory report data. This research model is meaningful in that it not only effectively supports the current aviation safety mandatory report analysis work, but also can be applied to various data produced in the aviation safety field in the future.

Sudden wind changes at low altitudes pose a significant threat to aircraft operations. In particular, airports located in regions with complex terrain are susceptible to frequent abrupt wind variations, affecting aircraft takeoff and landing. To mitigate these risks, Low Level Wind shear Alert System (LLWAS) have been implemented at airports. This study focuses on understanding the characteristics of wind shear and developing a prediction model for Jeju International Airport, which experiences frequent wind shear due to the influence of Halla Mountain and its surrounding terrain. Using two years of LLWAS data, the study examines the occurrence patterns of wind shear at Jeju International Airport. Additionally, high-resolution numerical model is utilized to produce forecasted information on wind shear. Furthermore, a comparison is made between the predicted wind shear and LLWAS observation data to assess the prediction performance. The results demonstrate that the prediction model shows high accuracy in predicting wind shear caused by southerly winds.

In order to predict low-level wind shear at Incheon International Airport (RKSI), a Low-Level Wind Shear prediction system (KMAP-LLWS) along the runway take-off and landing route at RKSI was established using Korea Meteorological Administration Post-Processing (KMAP). For the performance evaluation, the case of low-level wind shear cases calculated from Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) from July 2021 to June 2022 was used. As a result of verification using the performance evaluation index, POD, FAR, CSI, and TSS were 0.5, 0.85, 0.13, and 0.34, respectively, and the prediction performance was improved by POD, CSI, and TSS compared to the Low-Level Wind Shear prediction system (LDPS-LLWS) calculated using the Korea Meteorological Administration's Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS). This means that the use of high-resolution numerical models improves the predictability of wind changes. In addition, to improve the high FAR of KMAP-LLWS, the threshold for low-level wind shear strength was adjusted. As a result, the most effective low-level wind shear threshold at 8.5 knot/100 ft was derived. This study suggests that it is possible to predict and respond to low-level wind shear at RKSI. In addition, it will be possible to predict low-level wind shear at other airports without wind shear observation equipment by applying the KMAP-LLWS.

To minimize the occurrence of aviation accidents in the post-COVID, continuous flight training is crucial. However, the current infrastructure of domestic airports and airfields is insufficient to prepare for and respond to accidents, and there is a need for sufficient facility capacity. Therefore, this study examines the construction of a regional airport to minimize aviation accidents and selects factors necessary for determining the site location. Among the 11 selected factors, six were considered the most important site selection factors, including noise issues, weather conditions, obstacle limitations, environmental issues, airspace conditions, and facility usability. Applying these factors, an analysis was conducted on the Songpo area of Sacheon City, Gyeongsangnam-do. Based on a comprehensive review, it can be concluded that the Songpo area is a suitable choice for a regional airport due to its excellent transportation environment, consideration of noise and environmental issues with the residential population, and other factors. Furthermore, the development of the aviation industry is expected to bring about an increase in tourism and economic benefits, and it is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the domestic aviation industry along with the construction of the currently under-construction Ulleung Airport.

Aluminum alloys are important materials in modern aircraft. Aircraft failures due to corrosion are fatal and costly. Thus, information about the atmospheric corrosion of aluminum is helpful for aviation safety. This study employed four corrosion models and 12 environmental variables to improve knowledge of aluminum atmospheric corrosivity: PACER LIME, ICP, ISO CORRAG, and a modified model of CORRAG. This study applied each model on 47 aircraft operating bases in Korea and compared the results. In the results, The risk of corrosion was different for each model. The cause was the difference in environmental variables according to the model. Especially, the effect of ozone, which has recently been increasing, was shown in the results of PACER LIME. These findings suggest that caution is needed when assessing atmospheric corrosion risk as a single model. Furthermore, it means that the application and integration of various models are needed to improve atmospheric corrosion risk assessment.

Jeju International Airport is characterized by the occurrence of low-level windshear due to its location, surrounding terrain, and its weather characteristics. Especially the low-level windshear accompanied by tailwinds on both sides of the runway i.e., bidirectional tailwind, is a hazardous weather phenomenon with unique characteristics that are difficult to find at any other airports. This study focuses on bidirectional tailwind occurrence at Jeju International Airport in 2020-2021. As a result, characteristic pressure patterns of the types that cause bidirectional tailwind was identified as it was possible to categorize strong wind types such as 1) strong southwest wind, 2) strong east wind, and 3) strong northwest wind, which do not cause bidirectional tailwind, and wind direction variation types such as 4) bidirectional tailwind, and 5) south wind followed by southwest wind, which cause bidirectional tailwind. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving aviation safety by enabling aviation operators to predict and take appropriate safety measures based on their understanding of the causes and characteristics of bidirectional tailwind.

An indicator system is an effective way to monitor ongoing safety status. Current aviation safety measurements account for many qualitative technical and lagging indicators. Conversely, quantitative and leading indicators have only a tiny proportion. This research added more quantitative leading indicators and reviewed them to harmonize lagging and leading indicators to measure airport safety and provide an index. The South Korean national gate, Incheon International Airport's indicators, were applied as primary data to verify this research practically. Then, examples from International and national authorities were reviewed and extracted for use. Fifty-five safety specialists participated in the focus group discussion and three rounds of the Delphi survey. Finally, 51 sub-indicators were newly chosen. After this process, weights for each indicator could be assigned using the AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) to provide an integrated index. The result of the simulation with newly added indicators in the past five years (2020-2022) reliable trend showed in indicators and integrated index. Moreover, this allows monitoring the status of the details of indicators and holistic insight. This study considered that it is more suitable for a single company or service provider to use it according to the exact situation than in a macro- and general-purpose at the country or regional level.

In recent years, the competition for employment among college students has become more intense. It is also the time when strong personal beliefs and will to develop careers are required for successful employment through stable major study. Therefore, in this study, we tried to find out the effect on major attitude and employment efficacy according to the level of aviation safety perception, which is an important issue in the aviation industry. For analysis, survey is conducted targeting college students majoring in aviation service who are enrolled in universities in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong area. To verify the hypotheses of the study, demographic characteristics are identified based on questionnaires, reliability and validity of measurement items are verified, and structural equation model analysis is performed to verify the hypotheses. The analysis results are as follows. First, it is found that safety knowledge and safety consciousness, which are sub-factors of aviation safety perception of college students majoring in aviation service, have a positive (+) effect on subject recognition, learning process recognition, and career recognition of major recognition. Second, subject recognition, learning process recognition, and career recognition, which are sub-factors of major recognition, are found to have a positive effect on major commitment. Third, it is found that major commitment have a positive (+) effect on employment efficacy. Based on the research results, practical support plans and strategies for effective major study and successful employment are presented.

In the recent context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is growing interest in digital transformation and smart factory as a focal point. But, the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) sector has seen limited research on digital transformation, primarily concentrating on digitally-driven areas. The study validates hypotheses pertaining to the factors that facilitate successful digital transformation within the A&D sector and the influence of digital leadership and dynamic capabilities, employing statistical tools like SPSS and AMOS. The comprehensive analysis reveals that, similar to manufacturing industries, digital leadership in A&D companies exerts an influence on successful digital transformation through dynamic capabilities. Furthermore, digital transformation within the A&D sector has a positive impact on firm performance. This paper offers empirical insights into digital transformation within the A&D sector, shedding light on how successful digital transformation can be achieved within the domestic A&D industry.

This research explores how different corporate cultures can influence the post-M&A performance of the airlines undergoing strategic M&A in Korea. The sample size of this research is 214 respondents that is strictly limited to the employees of airlines under M&A process, and CFA and SEM were employed for the statistical analysis. This research investigated that corporate cultures including group-oriented, development-oriented, and rationale-oriented will positively influence the post M&A performance of both efficiency and effectiveness through a mediation of collaboration during M&A process. In contrast, relations between grouporiented culture and interaction, interaction and effectiveness were not revealed positive influences. The findings of this research will provide valuable insights into the potential risks that can impede successful M&A within the M&A process, specially focusing on the conflicts between organizations stemming from different organizational cultures, which can have an adverse impact on M&A performance.

The traditional safety management method starts with the misconception that similar accidents will recur if the inappropriate behavior of the person who caused the accident is investigated and punishment is not judged. However, in modern safety management, incidents or situations occur when negative conditions latent in the system are mutually influenced and triggered. The precedent for revoking the disposition of suspension of first officer A of Eastar Jet, which won a legal lawsuit against the administrative regulatory authority, is a representative example that will serve as an opportunity for the administrative regulatory authority to break away from the punishment-oriented safety management method of the past. On the other hand, airmans and air carriers also need to have a clear understanding of flight regulations, and when judicial judgment is required, predictable and effective legal effects can be obtained by preparing clear standards for flight regulations. In addition, administrative regulatory authorities expect a change from the punishment-oriented safety management policy of the past to a systematic safety management policy.

The main purpose of the research was to review the global trends of airport's smart security technologies. Moreover, using the case studies of airport using smart security, this paper tried to propose the implication how the findings through the case studies may be important for airport policy and will impact the future research of airport operation. It is expected in the future the aviation security technology with biometric information evolves from single identification to multiple identification technology which has combined application of iris, vein and others. Facing post COVID-19 era, the number of passengers traveling through airports continues increase dramatically and the risks as well, the role of AI becomes even more crucial. With AI based automated security robotics airport operators could effectively handle the growing passenger and cargo volume and address the associated issues Smart CCTV analysis with A.I. and IoT applying solutions could also provide significant support for airport security.
