The transport of livestock is a complex operation with significant negative welfare consequences. This research focused on managing heat stress and reducing animal mortality in maritime livestock transport. The purpose of this study was to move beyond linear management models by examining the complex feedback loops that drive heat stress in maritime livestock logistics. This study used Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) to map the non-linear inter-dependencies between space temperature, humidity, ventilation, and loading capacity. Furthermore, the theoretical framework was qualitatively supported through discussion, using case studies of Australian livestock exports and modern technological frameworks, to show how these causal relations influence decisions regarding loading capacity to reduce mortality. The analysis showed that the stability of the system is maintained through balancing loops, such as mechanical ventilation and biological perspiration, which counteract the "Heat Added" inflow from environmental factors and animal metabolism. These findings show that proactive system stabilization, enabled by sensors and high-performance engineering, is essential for mitigating the reinforcing cycles of heat stress. This study suggests that systemic adjustments are imperative over linear solutions. The dynamic loading capacity must be prioritized, and concrete shipment guidelines should be established for worldwide application.
