Economic Impacts of Visiting Friends and Relatives: Self-perception of Hosts and Guests

방한 친구, 친지 방문(VFR) 여행의 경제적 함의: 호스트와 게스트의 인식을 중심으로

Although scholarly interest in the broader economic impact of Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) travel has increased, research addressing its specific significance in the Korean context remains sparse. To address this gap, this study investigates the economic implications of VFR travel in Korea, with particular attention to the self-perception of VFR participants revealed from their narratives. In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 host-guest pairs in 2022 and 2023. Among them, 21 participants explicitly articulated perspectives related to economic contribution, shedding light on how VFR participants themselves perceive their impact on local economies. By juxtaposing quantifiable economic outcomes with the subjective self-perception of VFR participants, this study highlights the value of an integrated approach that captures both measurable and perceived dimensions of VFR's economic influence. The findings contribute to advancing a more holistic understanding of the role of VFR travel in regional development and offer a foundation for further inquiry into its underexplored economic implications.

친구, 친지 방문(VFR) 여행의 경제적 파급효과에 대한 학계의 관심이 늘고 있음에도, 방한 VFR이 경제적 측면에서 갖는 함의에 대해서는 거의 보고되어 있지 않다. 본 단보에서는 기존 연구에서 보고된 친구, 친지 방문의 파급효과를 경제적 측면을 중심으로 살펴보고, 2022~2023년 총 28쌍의 호스트와 게스트를 대상으로 진행된 인터뷰 내용 중 경제적 기여에 대해 언급한 21인의 진술을 바탕으로 VFR 참가자들이 스스로 인식하는 지역 경제에 미치는 함의를 정리하였다. 본 단보는 계량적으로 집계되는 VFR의 경제적 효과와 더불어 VFR 참가자들이 스스로 인식하는 경제적 기여를 상호보완적으로 고려하여 VFR이 지역에 미치는 영향을 보다 총체적으로 이해하는 데 출발점이 될 수 있다는 의의가 있다.
