Heat Wave Vulnerability of Elderly Living Alone: A GIS and Text-Mining Approach

Abstract

The proportion of the elderly living alone is increasing sharply with rising aging population rates in Korea. They lack information acquisition ability and have a slow response pace to various disasters and safety situations. Therefore, a prompt system and a manual should be established to prevent accidents. This study was conducted in two ways: discovering disasters most frequently associated with the elderly living alone using news headline extraction and text-mining, and uncovering those disasters using the Geographic Information System (GIS). The result of the first analysis identified summer heatwaves, and in the second analysis, the heat index was adopted as an indicator to measure heatwaves. GIS tools such as Raster Calculator and IDW were used to analyze vulnerability to heatwaves based on data of elderly individuals living alone and heat index data. The analysis results at a township level suggest that preemptive measures are required for high-risk areas.

한국에서는 고령화 비율이 급격히 증가함에 따라 혼자 사는 노인의 비율도 크게 증가하고 있다. 혼자 사는 노인들은 다양한 재난 및 안전 상황에서 정보 습득 능력과 대응 속도가 부족하기 때문에 사고를 예방하기 위한 신속한 시스템과 매뉴얼이 필요하다. 본 연구는 뉴스 제목 크롤링 및 텍스트 마이닝을 통해 혼자 사는 노인과 가장 많이 연관된 재난을 발견하고, 지리정보시스템(GIS)을 사용하여 이러한 재난을 파악하는 두 가지 방법으로 진행되었다. 첫 번째 분석 결과, 여름 폭염이 확인되었으며, 두 번째 분석에서는 폭염을 측정하기 위한 지표로 열지수가 채택했다. GIS 도구인 Raster Calculator와 IDW(보간법)를 사용하여 혼자 사는 노인의 데이터와 열지수 데이터를 바탕으로 폭염 취약성을 분석했다. 읍면동 수준에서의 분석 결과에 따르면, 고위험 지역에 대한 선제적 조치가 필요하다.
