Effectiveness of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy Using Meridian Muscle Theory for Myofascial Pain Syndrome Related to Knee Pain: A Case Report

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) based on the meridian muscle theory in alleviating knee pain caused by myofascial pain syndrome. Three patients diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome affecting the rectus femoris (RF) and tensor fasciae latae (TFL) muscles received six ESWT sessions over two weeks. The treatment targeted the meridian muscles of the stomach and gallbladder in the lower extremities. The evaluation metrics included range of motion (ROM), numeric rating scale (NRS), pain pressure thresholds (PPT), and Lysholm knee score. Results showed a reduction in NRS from 4.3 to 1.7, an increase in Lysholm score from 70.3 to 78.7, and improved PPT values from 2.4 to 5.3 and 2.6 to 5.2 in the RF and TFL, respectively. No significant changes in ROM or adverse effects were observed. These findings suggest that ESWT based on the meridian muscle theory may effectively reduce anterior knee pain; however, further research is needed to confirm these results.
