Clinical Effect of Ultrasound-guided Pharmacopuncture Therapy for Chronic Cervical Vertigo after Traffic Accident: A Case Report Compliant with CARE Guidelines

Abstract

The aim of this study is to present the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided pharmacopuncture treatment in a patient with chronic cervical vertigo following a traffic accident. Through a retrospective chart review, we collected the following information on a patient: chief complaints, onset, treatment course, treatment methods, numerical rating scale (NRS), dizziness handicap inventory (DHI), etc. A 71-year-old female patient diagnosed with cervical vertigo after excluding other conditions presented with persistent symptoms despite acupuncture and moxibustion. Subsequently, ultrasound-guided pharmacopuncture was performed on the sternocleidomastoid muscle three times over two weeks. Post-intervention, vertigo resolved NRS from 8 to 0, and the DHI score decreased significantly from 66 to 12. Headaches diminished similarly, and posterior neck pain significantly improved. The patient maintained this improved condition for approximately three weeks, with no adverse events noted. This study suggests that ultrasound-guided pharmacopuncture treatment may be effective for the treatment of patients with chronic cervical vertigo.
