솟대타기 기예는 한 나라의 역사적 상황, 사회문화적 전통 등에 따라 매우 다양한 변주들이 이루어졌다. 본고에서는 일본 솟대타기류 기예의 역사적 흐름과 연행양상, 현재적 전승 상황 등을 문헌적 접근과 다양한 도상자료를 근거로 살펴보았다. 한 연희종목의 역사와 양상을 밝히는 작업은 이연희를 소개함과 동시에 공시적, 통시적으로 연희를 접근하는 것으로서, 연희사의 지평을 넓혀가는 기회가 되기 때문이다. 한국과 중국으로부터 산악백희가 전래된 이래 일본의 전통연희는 큰 변화를 맞이했다. 일본의 솟대타기는 쇼소인(正倉院) 탄궁칠화에 나타난 정간(頂竿) 기예가 첫 기록이다. 이후 중세시대의 구모마이(蜘舞), 근세의 니혼다케, 잇본다케 등 견예류 기예가 발전했다. 전통곡예의 발전은 근대 이후 서양의 서커스가 유입되는 데에도 유리하게 작용했음을 확인할 수 있다. 일본 곡예류의 발전과정과 전승 양상은 우리의 솟대타기를 복원, 재현하는 데 약간의 실마리를 제공할 수 있다. 또한 본고에서는 장대를 신체에 올리는 기예를 지역의 큰 축제로 승화시켜 일본 동북부 3대 축제 중의 하나로 일궈낸 아키타현 간토마쓰리를 소개하였다. 간토마쓰리는 전통공연예술을 지역의 대표적 자랑거리로서도 기능하게 했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 앞으로 우리의 솟대타기를 제대로 복원하여 전통의 맥을 잇고자 하는 연구자들에게 많은 힌트를 제공할 것으로 믿는다.
