Abstract
The concept of block-type detached housing site has been evolved in various ways after its first appearance in 2002 by the Korean Land & Housing Corporation. This study aims to analyze the detail of design and planning of low-rise townhouse development in the form of block-type housing sites in order to suggest its future applications. The 15 cases in the Hwaseong Dongtan 1st stage new town were chosen to be analyzed. The townhouse supply in Dongtan new town was first initiated in 2008 and has been still ongoing until 2016. The factors of observation were unit plan, parking and garden, energy efficiency and community facilities. First we confirmed that the townhouse supply was not built from 2009 to 2010 and was restarted since April 2011. And downsizing of unit plans, diversity of planning and functional efficiency were evident in comparison with those of earlier townhouses. Finally, this study suggests that low-rise townhouses in block-type detached housing site of Dongtan may well be a desirable form of inner city rehabilitation or redevelopment in the future.
