Abstract

Today, the invent of Digital Technology evolving fast and the potential of successive construction by it which help for architects to try to realize the unification of form and function which Modern architects had failed. Form is no longer just a physical envelope remaining disengaged from function that wraps a shape. Rather, form is performative and responsive consistently toward natural, cultural and social environments. Under this circumstance, the purpose of this study was to analyze comtemporary architecture and to understand its formal embryological backgrounds through the lens of 'performance'. To begin with, this study analyzes three generative systems of performative architecture: parametric generative system, topological modeling, and engineering optimization of production/construction/control system. Through applying these systems, a domain of comtemporary architecture has kept experimenting to generate new architecture with optimized performance. As a result, this study was able to find three generative types such as materials, materialization, digital fabrication, tectonic structure, and optimization of system consist of performative characteristics in contemporary architecture. These three embryological characteristics of performative architecture make it differentiate from informal architecture which focused on making form in general.
