Abstract

This paper is the analytical case study of the Lower Downtown Historic Area in Denver, USA. From railroad boomtown to derelict warehouse district to trendy historic neighborhood, Lower Downtown (LoDo) is highly acclaimed as a successful urban rehabilitation implemented by a combination of visionary leadership and exquisite urban plans. Especially LoDo neighborhood plans and guidelines contribute solidifying the current historic cityscape. The strength of the plan and guidelines lies in defining the LoDo's historic context and establishing detailed strategies of "being in the context" of the new buildings. The plans stress on the context collectively composed by the unique scale of the historic buildings. Consequently the consecutiveness of the mass, height and width of the buildings seen on streets is the prime scenary to be kept and inherited to the new building. And this is to secure enclosure of the urban street walls perceived at street level, which is the urban heritage of the historic city.
