Abstract

The major focus of this study is on the design development criteria of three dimensional use of a below-ground level highway with case study of Greenlink Windsor at the border of Canada and U. S. A, where the majority of the densely-populated residential areas intersect with the project area. The Greenlink, the design alternatives of local government, was developed to protect the urban context of the city of Windsor, Ontario from the impact of the extension of Highway 401, using a series of tunnels and programs on the open-cut covers. This study describes the project background, design concept development, a number of decisive effects on the design and survey analysis of the case study. The final design of Greenlink is to protect of local community as well as to improve the urban environment, and four design strategies was proposed for highway-park design: Understanding the potential for green space; Maximizing usable space in the corridor; Creating the opportunity for future land use while shielding and connecting existing communities; and Maximizing the citizen participation in design process.
