Abstract
Establishing a street space where applies the public design project, as a ground of communication requires an endeavor to consider the changing publiceness and to realize it. Based on this background, this research analyzed the Dongseongno public design improvement project cases, by reviewing the project report and related articles and the minutes of the Commission for Promotion, launching an observation survey of the project, and giving an interview with the subjects who took part in it. As a result, the following results came out. Firstly, this project was organized by the Commission for Promotion, a decision-making organization consisting of subjects with a variety of interests, and the participation subjects were divided into the Commission for Promotion, the Administrational Support Bureau, MA, the design team and citizens. They were in close communication to progress the project, by the medium of cooperation, consultation, support, report, proposal, mediation and control. Secondly, there were a good number of discussions on conflicting issues among interested parties that were complexly and variously entangled, rather than giving a focus on the improvement of physical environment only. During this process, many cases resulted in a compromise on the difference of opinions of the participants resulted in a compromise, and some social conflicting issues were settled by an aggressive intervention and effort of administration, although the best agreements were smoothly extracted, In some instances. Thirdly, the project focused its fundamental direction and plan on laying stress on the placeness as the centre of Daegu commercial sphere and recovering the historical identity as the eastern road of Daegu Eupsung. Fourthly, it has been managed and operated by Junggu District Office of Daegu Metropolitan City, and the road or street facilities have been administered individually by different departments, after the project. Also, lots of events such as Dongseongno Festival and Dongseongno Road Art Consulting Project have been held, and the outdoor stage has been opened to citizens every weekend for different cultural events.
