Abstract
The purpose of this study is to certify that criticism of institutional space conducted by institutional critique in conceptual arts is a key to create concepts of contemporary art museum. To achieve this, the first part of study examined characteristics of institutional exhibition space in modern art museum, which formed main subjects for institutional critique artists. In the next part of this study, concepts of 'institution' and space which contemporary art museum should be oriented towards were deducted through analysis of these artists' works. On the basis of this synthesis, the last part of study illustrated that 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art-Kanazawa, considered as a successful case, has included these critical characteristics of institutional space. In this chapter, institutional concept of contemporary art museum and architectural characteristics integrated with exhibition concepts and methods of contemporary art were analyzed by examining the design process and outcomes. As a result of this study connecting concept art to building design, it has supplemented the limitation on where design discourses of contemporary art museum in Korea have remained in the area of policy and architecture.
