곱셈과 나눗셈 기호의 생략 규칙 학습을 위한 카드 게임의 고안과 활용

A Card-Game for Exercising Abbreviations of the Multiplication Sign ${\times}$ and the Division Sign ${\div}$ in Calculating Expressions

문자인식을 다루는 과정에서 곱셈 기호와 나눗셈 기호를 생략하는 규칙은 하나의 약속이며, 생략된 기호를 바르게 인식하고 있어야 주어진 문자식의 의미를 제대로 이해할 수 있다. 그러나 대다수의 학생들은 이러한 규칙의 학습 과정을 지루해 하고 재미없어 하며 그 중요성을 간파하는 경우가 많다. 이에 본 연구에서는 학생들이 문자식의 단순화 과정, 즉 곱셈 기호와 나눗셈 기호의 생략 과정을 재미있게 학습하도록 하기 위한 방안으로 카드 게임을 고안하고, 이를 활용한 수업을 시행하여 그 효과와 의의를 분석하였다. 그 결과 본 연구에서 고안한 카드 게임이 학생들의 학습 흥미와 동기를 유발하는 효과가 있음을 관찰할 수 있었다. 그리고 카드 게임을 시행하는 동안 학생들 간의 협력 학습이 자발적으로 이루어졌고 기호 생략 규칙에 관한 학생들의 오류 및 오개념이 즉각적으로 확인되고 교정되었으며 연산 기호를 생략하는 과정 뿐 아니라 그 역과정을 학생들이 자연스럽게 경험할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Variables and expressions are essential for doing mathematics. Especially abbreviations of the multiplication sign ${\times}$ and the division sign ${\div}$ are current rules that we usually follow. In this paper, we devised a Card-Game for exercising abbreviations of the multiplication sign ${\times}$ and the division sign ${\div}$ in calculating expressions, designed a teaching unit for the calculation of expressions using the Card-Game in the variables and expressions strand, and discussed the implications of using the Card-Game for motivating students, cooperative learning, diagnosis and correction of errors, and so on.
