본 연구에서는 다변화되어 가는 현대사회 시민들의 의식수준을 조사하고 환경보존이 재해방지에 미치는 영향에 대해 본 고찰을 통하여 분석하여 보았다. 첫째, 환경문제 의식수준은 높고 의식은 매스미디어에서 가장 많이 얻는다. 둘째, 시민들은 오늘의 광주시 환경상태를 생각하며 그 대책이 시급하다고 생각하고 있다. 셋째, 환경보전 교육이 절실하게 필요하고 가장 시급한 문제는 수질 오염을 지향하고 있으며 환경파괴 없는 경제성장을 요구하고 있다. 넷째, 시민들은 중소도시에서 살고 싶고 미래에 대한 견해는 비교적 높은 참여 의식을 갖고 있다. 다른 지역으로 이주에 대한 문제는 중소도시를 원하고 있어 문화생활을 누리면서도 공해가 없는 곳을 원하고 있는 것으로 평가되며 환경문제는 앞으로 광주시에 증가할 것이라는 비관적 예상을 보여주고 있고 환경보전은 비교적 높은 참여의식을 보여 주고 있으나 실제로는 적극적이 아닌 것으로 평가 예측된다.
