Efficiency of University Libraries in Seoul by DEA

DEA를 이용한 도서관의 효율성 평가

Abstract

This paper estimates the relative efficiency of 29 university libraries in Seoul by data envelopment analysis. We employed library space, staff and book collection as inputs, and book circulation and reader visits as outputs. The result shows that average efficiency score is 0.5248 and only 3 libraries are efficient. Inefficiency is estimated to be 47.52%. Reorganization may be necessary in order to achieve greater efficiency.

본 연구는 Charnes, Cooper와 Rhodes에 의하여 고안된 DEA기법을 이용하여 서울지역에 소재하고 있는 29개 대학도서관의 효율성을 평가하였다. DEA의 투입물로는 면적, 직원수, 장서수로 하고, 산출물은 이용책수와 이용자수로 하여 효율성을 계산하였다. 그 결과 평균효율성은 0.5248로 나타나서 비효율성은 47.52%로 나타났다. 이러한 효율치는 투입물과 산출물의 수나 혹은 정의가 다르면 서로 다른 결과를 보여 줄 수 있으므로 절대적인 것은 아니다. 그러나 DEA에서 계산된 정보를 이용하여 적정투입물과 적정산출물을 구할 수 있기 때문에 DEA에 의한 분석정보를 적절하게 사용하면 도서관의 운영효율성을 개선하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
