Abstract

Metal phthalocyanine derivatives, Fe(III)-TCMP and Cu(I)-TCMP, were synthesized to investigate their potential use as catalytic deodorants. Their chemical structures were characterized by FT-IR and AA spectroscopy, and catalytic activities were evaluated in terms of decomposition yield of hydrogen peroxide. Although both of them had sufficient activities for a catalytic deodorant, Fe(III)-TCMP showed better result than Cu(I)-TCMP. Percentage of deodorization of Fe(III)-TCMP was investigated by measuring the rate of oxidation of 2-mercaptoethanol, a representative index material for bad smelling compounds. The percentage was dependent on the concentration of Fe(III)-TCMP and reaction temperature. It increased as concentration and temperature increased. However, the percentage was high even at low concentration and low temperature. More than 95% of 2-mercaptoethanol could be removed within 30 minutes with 2% of Fe(III)-TCMP at 2$0^{\circ}C$.
