Abstract

Vinyl pivalate(VPi) was solution-polymerized at 40℃ using 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl-valeronitrile)(ADMVN) as initiator and dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) and tertiary butyl alcohol(IBA) as solvents, respectively. Syndiotacticity-rich ultrahigh molecular weight poly(vinyl alcohoI)(PVA) microsbrillar Sber having number-average degree of polymerization(p ) of 12,400∼15,600, syndiotactic died(S-diad) content of 58∼61% could be prepared by the special sapohification method of synthesized poly(vinyl pivalate) having P of 26,800∼32,600. P of PVA using TBA was larger than that of PVA using DMSO. On the other hand, the conversion of the former was smaller than that of the latter, and it was found that the polymerization rate of VPi in TBA was lower than that in DMSO. P of PVA was constant and independent of the increase of P of PVPi contrary to the increase of conversion. The syndiotacticity and crystal melting temperature of PVA from PVPi polymerized in TBA were much superior to those of PVA from PVPi in DMSO.
