Abstract

A series of thermotropic liquid crystalline(LC) copolymers based on p-acctoxybcnzoic acid(p-ABA)/terephthalic acid(TPA)/low inherent viscosity(IV) PET/Melton/2.7- diacetoxynaphthalene(2.7-DAU) was prepared by melt polymerization. The compositions of these monomers in the LC-copolyesters were varietal as a means of manipulating inherent viscosity and properties. Highly anisotropic melts were observed indicating the presence of nematic rnesophase. The thermotropic liquid crystalline copolymer exhibited a well tleveloped and highly oriented fibrillar structure. Copolymers with inherent viscosities of 0.6~1.9 that were processiblic in the temperature range of 200~23$0^{\circ}C$ were obtained. The degradation temperature decreased with increasing amide unit content. The composition of PET/Melton affected the glass trailsition of LC-copolymers insignificantly, however, the glass transition temperatures depended on the total composition of the LC-copolymers significantly.
