Abstract

Blend of nylon 6 with thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) were prepared by melt bleriding, and filaments were obtained by extruding the blends with capillary rheometer. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that fibrils of LCP were oriented along fiber axis. The increase of crystallization temperature of nylon in nylon 6/LCP blend is due to the highly oriented LCP fibrils acting as nuclei for the formation of nylon 6 crystals. The optical texture of nylon 6/LCP melt shows two phase system at 295$^{\circ}C$. Tensile modulus and yield strength increased markedly with increasing LCP content in nylon 6hcp filament. Storage modulus of nylon 6/LCP filament is higher than that of nylon 6. The improved properties might be achieved due to the fibril-reinfor- cod morphology.
