Abstract

This study was performed for the development of antimicrobial finished nonwoven fabrics. Viscose rayon nonwoven fabrics were treated with commercial organic silicon quaternary ammonium salt using batch technique according to various treatment conditions. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by shake flask method, and the reactivity of organic silicon were evaluated by measuring the absorbance using UV-visible spectrophotometer. Mechanical properties such as tensile, bending, shear, compression, and surface properties related to hand were measured by KES-F system. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. Antimicrobial activity was significantly affected by the treatment concentration and temperature, Excellent antimicrobial activity was obtained at 0.3% o.w.f. concentration and optimum treatment temperature 4$0^{\circ}C$. 2. Silicon content increased with increased treatment concentration. It increased up to 30 minutes of treatment time and then decreased. The reactivity of specimen treated at the temperature higher than 4$0^{\circ}C$ rather decreased. To obtain excellent antimicrobial activity, silicon content taken up by specimen should be more than 100 ppm. 3. Tensile resilience, bending hysteresis, compressional energy and mean deviation of frictional coefficient of the treated specimen were increased, and tensile linearity, tensile energy, bending rigidity, shear rigidity, shear hysteresis, frictional coefficient and geometrical roughness were decreased in comparison with those of untreated specimen.
